Chapter 6

Back at the pad, Mike, Micky, and Davy were involved in a game of cards. That is until Peter burst through the door.

"Hey guys, Julie asked me to take her to the prom," Peter said full of excitement.

"That's great, we're really happy for you," Mike said with a smile.

"I have to go shop for a tux," Peter said, running back out the door.

"All the stores are," Micky started and then finished after the door slammed, "closed after five."

No sooner than Peter had left, the phone rang.

"Micky Dolenz speaking," Micky said into the receiver.

"Micky, this is Julie. I've got a problem. I asked Peter to go to the prom with me, but I can't go the way I look. I really could use a makeover," Julie said. "Can you help me?"

"Don't worry Julie. We'll take care of everything," Micky assured her.

"Thanks," Julie said.

"We'll come get you after school tomorrow," Micky told her.

"Ok," she replied.

"Ok then, bye," Micky said. As he hung up the phone, Micky went from calm to panic.

"She wants a makeover. What in the world do we know about giving makeovers?" Micky asked hysterically.

"I take it that was Julie on the phone," Davy said.

"Yep," Micky replied.

"Gentlemen, three days ago we embarked on a project that would forever change the life of one of our fellow youth. It was tough, but did we give up? No, I say. We've forged through to victory and we will not let this one small battle defeat us. I say if it's a makeover she wants, a makeover she will get. We will be triumphant," Mike said regally as Davy hummed `The Battle Hymn of the Republic'.

"What was that all about?" Micky asked confused.

"Well, if we've come this far we can't give up now," Mike said in his normal voice.

"I can't do anything with my own hair, let alone a girl's. I refuse to even try," Micky said.

"Yeah, and what about the makeup? I think you need some sort of degree to learn how to apply that stuff. Don't expect me to go out and buy any either. It was embarrassing enough to buy Peter's night light the last time I was shopping," Davy commented.

"No, we need a beautician to help us," Mike said.

"Mike we're men. We go to barbers. Why would we know any beauticians?" Micky asked.

"We don't, but I know for a fact that Davy dated one last week. Did you happen to end on good terms?" Mike asked Davy.

"We broke up, how good of terms do you want?" Davy said sarcastically.

"Well, would she do you a favor?" Mike asked.

"For a fee she probably would. It might cost me an arm and a leg though," Davy said, rolling his eyes.

"Naw you're little. You'd better make it two arms and a leg," Micky said with a grin.

"Shut up Dolenz," Davy said as he gave Micky a look.

"Go call her up," Mike told him.

"Do I have to?" Davy whined.

"Yes, this is for a friend. The prom is supposed to be the happiest night of a girl's life besides her wedding. We want Julie to look her best," Mike said.

"Oh ok," Davy said as he grabbed his little black book and picked up the phone. He dialed the number then after a few rings he spoke.

"Hello, is this Stella? This is Davy?Davy Jones? What do you mean you don't know who this is? We went out just last week?Yeah, it's Shorty?Anyway, I was wondering if you'd do a favor for me?...You will?...For a steak dinner! You must be joking! I don't have that kind of money?Ok, whatever you say?The favor is a female friend of mine needs a makeover for the prom? We'll bring her by tomorrow around four?Thank you," Davy said as he hung up the phone.

"Well?" Mike asked expectantly.

"She'll help, but it's going to cost me a steak dinner," Davy said.

"Thanks for your help pal," Mike said as he patted Davy on the back.

The next day Mike, Micky, Davy, and Peter made their way to the high school to get Julie.

"So why are we picking Julie up from school?" Peter asked.

"She's getting a makeover for prom," Davy said.

"She doesn't need a makeover. She's lovely the way she is," Peter said.

"Are you kidding me?" Micky asked in shock.

"Micky!" Mike rebuked.

"I mean doesn't every girl always want to look better than they usually do? Prom is a big deal to every girl, not just Julie," Micky said.

"Yeah, she just wants to look extra special for you Pete," Davy said.

As they pulled up to the school, they spotted Julie right away, who was talking to a couple of special needs kids. Mike honked the horn and Julie spotted them. She waved goodbye to the people she had been talking to and headed toward the car.

"Hi Peter," Julie said as she slid in the seat next to him.

"Hi Julie," Peter said as he flashed a huge grin.

"I missed you," Julie said.

"I missed you more," Peter said.

"Nuh-uh," Julie said.

"Uh-huh," Peter replied.

"I'm going to be sick," Mike said as he listened to the lovey dovey conversation.

They finally pulled up in front of the beauty shop. A petite, blonde headed woman came out to greet them.

"Hi, I'm Stella Parker. You must be the Monkees. I'll bet this girl here is your friend, right David?" Stella said, pointing at Julie.

"Yes this is Julie Morris," Davy said.

"Ok Julie, come with me and we'll get you all fixed up. I'll call you guys when she's ready," Stella said.

As Julie was getting out of the car, Peter grabbed her hand.

"I'll miss you," Peter said.

"I'll miss you more," Julie said.

"No way," Peter replied.

"Yes way," Julie retorted. They began to rub noses and muttered pet names to each other. Mike rolled his eyes and sighed in disgust.

"Will you two cut that out?! Man, I need an airsick bag," Mike complained.

After Julie had been dropped off at the salon the guys went back to the pad and waited by the phone. Two hours later, the guys were looking at their watches and then at the phone.

"I wish I knew what was going on. How long does a makeover take?" Mike asked.

"I don't know, but it used to take me sisters an hour to get ready for school in the mornings," Davy said.

"I wonder what she'll look like," Micky pondered.

"Beautiful probably, she has such a beautiful personality that she doesn't need to be glamorous," Peter said.

"You've got a point there Pete," Mike said. Moments later, the phone rang and Davy answered it.

"Hello?she's done?thank you, we'll be right over," Davy said and then hung up the phone. He turned to his band mates to tell them what was going on. "Hey guys, Julie's all done."

"Well let's go then," Micky said.

They all hopped into the car and headed to Stella's beauty salon. Once they pulled in front of the shop, Julie and Stella came out to meet them. Davy, Peter, Mike, and Micky's jaw dropped as they got out of the car to get a good look at Julie. Her hair looked thicker and was curly. It even looked a shade lighter. They gazed at her pretty pink cheeks and rich, red lips. The eye shadow she was wearing even brought out the color of her eyes.

"Julie, you're so beautiful," Peter commented. Julie squinted at the guys and stumbled over to where they were. She wrapped her arms around Mike and caressed the back of his neck.

"Oh Peter, I'm so happy," Julie said.

"You have the wrong guy," Mike said as he pulled Julie off of him.

Julie turned fifty shades of red because of her mistake. Peter took her by the arm and led her over to his side.

"Julie, where are your glasses?" Peter asked with concern.

"They're in my purse. Don't worry. I'll put them back on in a minute. I'm hoping not to have to wear them to the prom," Julie said.

"You can't see though," Peter said.

"She'll just have to hang on her date all night," Stella said with a smile.

"Where did you get that figure?" Micky asked, referring to Julie's sudden curves.

"It's all a fake. Stella taught me how to wrap and stuff so it doesn't look like Peter's taking a twelve year old to the prom," Julie explained.

"Well she sure is purty," Mike said, exaggerating his Texas accent for dramatic affect.

"I've gotta get back inside. Julie, I'll see you on Friday," Stella said as she returned to her shop.

"Doesn't she look great?" Peter commented as he held Julie closely.

"Yeah, she looks a little too great. I need to have a talk with Stella," Davy said.

He entered the salon and Stella turned around at the sound of his footsteps.

"Oh hi Davy! Julie looks good, doesn't she?" Stella commented.

"Yeah, she looks too good. I don't know what you are after, but all I can afford is that steak dinner we agreed upon," Davy said.

"Oh that, don't worry about it. This makeover is on the house," Stella said.

"Wait a minute! It's free, just like that? Why would you do that?" Davy asked.

"Julie and I got to talking and I found out that she is a friend of my sister, Cindi," Stella explained.

"You did all this because she's a friend of your sister?" Davy asked in disbelief.

"You don't understand. Cindi is not like other teenage girls. She has Downs Syndrome. School is rough on her and the other kids tease her terribly. She didn't have any friends until Julie volunteered to be her tutor. Now they have lunch together and hang out after school as well. This was the least I could do for her," Stella explained.

Davy felt bad for jumping to conclusions. He thought of the two kids he had seen Julie hanging out with and wondered if one of them was Cindi. It wasn't fair that people were treated badly because they were different. Davy decided to do something to change that.

"Stella, is your sister going to the prom?" Davy asked.

"She would love to except that no one will take her," Stella said.

"I'll take her. Tell Cindi that you know someone who wants to take her to the prom and have her give me a call," Davy said.

"David Jones, I could just kiss you," Stella said as she threw her arms around Davy, "Cindi will be so happy."

Davy and Stella came out of the salon hand in hand with big grins on their faces.

"Hey Pete, it looks like we're going to double date Saturday night," Davy said.

"What do you mean?" Peter replied confused.

"It means that Davy's taking my sister, Cindi to the prom," Stella said.

"Oh Davy thank you, I was hoping that Cindi could go to the prom," Julie said as she hugged him.

"You're going to be the most beautiful girl there," Peter replied.

"Thank you Peter, I have a feeling that Saturday will be the best night of my life," Julie said.

"There is one thing I'm glad that Stella couldn't change on you," Peter told her.

"What's that?" Julie asked.

"That warm and inviting smile," Peter said.

"Aw, you're so sweet," Julie said.

"No, you're even sweeter," Peter replied. Another round of pet name calling began again as Julie and Peter held hands and rubbed noses.

"This is so sweet that my teeth hurt," Mike replied.

"I need to borrow your gag bag," Micky said.

"Let's get out of here while we have the chance," Davy said.

So Davy, Mike, and Micky drove away, leaving Peter and Julie as they kissed in front of `Stella's Beauty Palace'.
