Hold On Girl
A week passed and everything seemed okay, a little shaky but okay none the less. Mary had been avoiding Mike so Peter didn’t get the wrong idea. Peter had also seemed to be around Mary all the time keeping a close eye on her. Mary knew that Peter didn’t trust her and it hurt. But would she trust Peter if he had kissed another girl?

Mary stood behind the counter at work. She looked at the clock. Ten minutes until she got off. It was a Friday and everything was eerie quiet. She had only a hand full of customers all day. Why was it that the last minutes of work always seemed to go the slowest? She had nothing left to keep her busy. She had already gone through the records to makes sure they were in the right place and re-stocked the ones that needed it. Mary let out a sigh; she tapped her fingers on the counter. She then sat down and spun in it, then stood back up. “Boy am I ever doing nothing.” She sighed out loud. Suddenly the bell on the front door rang. Mary looked up just as Mike walked over to her.
“Hi.” Mike smiled.
“Hi Mike, what are you doing here?” Mary asked puzzled.
“I had to pick up a guitar string for tonight. Dang thing broke right in the middle of practicing and you’d think I’d have another one but nope.” Mike let out a laugh. It was the truth sort of but it wasn’t like Mike could just tell her that he just want to see her. “So I knew you got off work at six and thought you wouldn’t mind a ride since you where coming over anyway.”
“Sure just let me check with Mr. Harper to see if it’s okay for me to leave.” Mary ran to the back and came out with her things.
“Ready?” Mike asked.
“Ready.”
They left the store and headed for the Monkeemobile. They drove the short distance home in silence. Mary didn’t want to say anything that would give Mike the wrong idea, not that she knew what to say anyways. They pulled up at the pad and Mary hurriedly got out of the car. Maybe Peter wouldn’t notice that Mike and her came into together. Before Mary could open the door Mike grabbed for the door handle and opened the door.
“Thank you.” Mary said walking in with Mike following behind.
Peter, Micky and Davy sat in the middle of the living room floor. Peter had a pen and notepad in his hand. He was tapping the pen on his leg. It looked at if they were all thinking hard about something.
“How about ‘When I find my boots I know I got to go’?” Micky said.
“That works.” Peter wrote done the lyric.
Mike shut the door and all eyes’s turned to them. Peter quickly put down the pen and notepad. He ran over to her and planted a kiss on her lips and pulled her into a hug.“What are you doing with him?” Peter whispered in Mary’s ear. From where Mary stood she could see Mike roll his eyes.
“Mike picked me up from work. Wasn’t that nice of him guys?” Mary answered.
“Awe how sweet.” Micky answered, Mary gave Micky a look. It really wasn’t helping.
“Yeah that was sweet Mike.” Davy said.
“Yeah that was nice Mike.” Peter said through clenched teeth. You could cut the tension with a knife.
“Hey Mary, Mike, want to hear the song we are working on?” Micky said trying to break the tension. Peter gave Micky the deadliest look. If looked could kill.
“Sure.” Mary smiled going along with Micky’s idea. She hated to be stuck in the middle of all this.
“Sit down luv.” Davy ushered Mary to sit. Mary took a seat in front of the bandstand and Mike stood behind her. Davy, Micky and Peter took there places on the bandstand. Peter picked up his guitar.
“Okay we don’t have much or much of a beat yet.” Micky said. He grabbed the paper that Peter had written the lyrics down on. Peter started strumming his guitar and Micky started to sing softly.
“Girl, I know the grass is greener, just around the bend. Got to say, "Goodbye!" but don't you fear.Though the road is dark and I might fail to find the end I won't disappear. I'll be back upon my feet. I'll be back upon my feet.Chase the moon and sun to find my one and only you.I'll be back upon my feet.I'll be back upon my feet.Looking high, I'm looking low. When I find my boots I know I got to go.”
Micky stopped singing. “That’s all we got right now.”
“Well Micky that was great, great song for your voice.” Mary said. Mike didn’t say a word.
“Glad you liked it.” Micky replied.
“Guys we should start practicing again.” Mike said interrupting Micky. Mike walked over to the bandstand and picked up his guitar, the guys quickly followed suit.

Later that night Mary watched the guys playing their set. They were in the middle of Mary, Mary. She smiled remembering when Micky wrote that song.
“Mary, Mary, it's not over.Where you go, I will follow.'Til I win your love againAnd walk beside you,But until then. Mary, Mary, where you goin' to?” Micky sang. Micky sat beside Mary on his bed staring at her.
“Micky stop staring at me like that. You should think I had a huge pimple on my nose.” Not that Mary really got any yet at 12 she was just starting to get them.
“Mary I wrote a song for you.” Micky suddenly found his hands very interesting.
“You wrote a song for me?” Mary said shocked. “Will you play it for me?”
Micky smiled and picked up his guitar that sat beside him and started singing it. When he finished Mary smiled at Micky.
“Mary I love you.” He then lend in and kissed Mary.
Mary snapped back to reality when someone sat down across from her. She looked at the person; she had never seen him before in her life. He had jet black hair and bright green eyes; he had on a red sweater and jeans.
“Hi I’m Tom.” The man said. Mary looked at Peter on stage; he wasn’t even looking her way.
“Hello, I’m Mary.” She said dryly.
“So Mary what are you doin’ here tonight?” Tom got up and sat in the chair beside Mary.
“I’m here watching my boyfriend and friends play.” She pointed up at Peter to make her point clear.
“So one of those Monkees is your boyfriend huh?”
“Yes.” Mary once again pointed at Peter. She didn’t know how she was going to get out of this. They still had another fifteen minutes left on their set. This time Peter looked at her, he smiled then saw Tom and fury ran through his eyes. Tom put his hand on Mary’s leg, she froze.
“Umm excuse me; I have to go to the bathroom.” Mary got up and left, Tom also got up and followed behind Mary. When she was almost to the bathroom Tom grabbed her by the wrist and pushed her up against the wall.
“There is no way I’m getting out of this.” Mary thought. The music was too loud for her to scream. Just as the thought came to her mind Tom put his hand over her mouth.
“No one would have to know, not even your little boyfriend.” Tom breathed into her ear. Tears excepted Mary’s eyes and ran down her face. She thought the worst.

Peter watched from the stage as Mary got up from her seat and then watched as the man sitting with Mary got up and followed her too. The fury that a second ago was going through him now vanished and worry replaced it. He got a feeling that something wasn’t right. He nodded at Davy and Davy scooted over to him.
“Something’s not right, Mary’s in trouble. I have to see what’s wrong, tell Mike and Micky.”
Davy went and told Micky and Mike while still trying to stay on beat to the music. Mike and Micky both nodded at Peter and Peter ran from the stage, he went to where he had seem Mary disappear to.

Mary closed her eyes, she couldn’t take this. This just couldn’t happen to her. Suddenly she felt Tom’s hand release and she opened her eyes. She found Tom on the floor holding his nose with Peter stand over him. Mary fell to the ground; Peter grabbed her and held her with dear life. She bursted into tears and rested her head on Peter chest. She had never felt she safe than at that moment. Micky, Mike and Davy walked up at that moment.
“What happened?” Micky asked coming to Mary’s side.
“This guy had Mary pined up against the all, I think he was going to...”
Peter couldn’t bring himself to say the words. Anger ran through Micky’s eyes. He sat down beside Mary and Peter and rubbed Mary’s back. Davy ran and got the owner to phone the police. Peter looked up at Mike and Mike went for Tom. He grabbed him by the shirt collar and slammed his up against the wall.
“What do you think you were going to do to her you scum bag!?” Tom did nothing but stutter. Micky grabbed Mike and pushed him away.
“Man its not worth it, Mary’s been through enough already.” Mike shot Micky a look and then walked away.

The rest of the night Peter and Mary spent at the police station filing assault charges against Tom. That’s all they could get on him.
“Ma'am I’m so sorry but he will only get maybe six months in jail if that.” The officer said.
“What? If I didn’t get there in time he could have done much more. Where is the justice in this city?” Peter shouted.
“Peter come on stop it.” Mary said.
“I’m sorry sir but nothing else did happen.” The police office said.
“Mary lets go home, if that’s all that can be done.”
“Hunny at least he won’t be out to hurt anyone for a few days.” Mary said following Peter out of the station.

Peter walked Mary home since he told the guys to just go home.
“Peter do you mind spending the rest of the night? I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep.” Mary asked once they reached her door.
“Of course I will babe.” Peter lent in and kissed Mary. How could he ever think Mary would cheat on him again. Mary loved him and he loved Mary and he wasn’t going to let anyone get in between them again.
