Chapter 12

When Love Comes Knockin’

Micky stood at Peter’s bedroom door. He was trying to muster up enough courage to go in there and talk to Peter about Mary. Since everything had gone on with Peter and Mary, Peter and Micky haven’t been the best of friends. Micky didn’t really blame Peter for feeling the way he did. He’d feel the same way if Lilly had done that to him but Micky knew how much Mary was suffering. It was time that Peter ended this. He knew that Peter wanted Mary back. You could see his emptiness in his eyes. He was suffering just as much as Mary. Micky lifted his hand from his side and tapped on the door.

“Yeah?” Can Peter’s voice from the other side of the door.

“Can I come in for a minute?” Micky asked from the other side of the door.

“Sure” Peter said emotionalist. Micky opened the door and stepped inside. Peter was lying on his bed with his back to the door. Micky went and sat on Davy’s bed.

“So Peter how are you?” Micky asked. Peter turn over to his other side to face Micky.

“Micky, what do you want?” Peter said getting straight to the point.

“I uhh want to talk about Mary”

“I don’t!” Peter said sharply.

“Man listen, she is a wreck. She’s not eating and she doesn’t leave the house but to go to work. She’s lost all will to live and I’m scared we may lose her soon. She is my best friend and yes I know she did something wrong but your crucifying her for it.”

“I don’t want to hear it man” Peter sat up and put his head in his hands like hearing this was driving him insane.

“Hey at least she had the guts to come to you and tell you. She came clean and she did it because she loves you. She wanted to tell you even if it meant losing you. Now your just being a jerk. You know you love her just as much as she loves you and I know you are hurting just as much as she is. Now be a man and go over there and tell her so or you just may lose the best thing you have in your life!” With at Micky stormed out of the room.

That left Peter thinking. He really did still love Mary but he wasn’t sure if he was ready to forgive her. How could he ever trust her again? He needed to talk to the one person that could answer all his questions, Mike!

*~~*

He found Mike sitting on the porch and walked out.“Mike can I talk to you?” Peter said sitting down beside Mike.

“If you promise not to punch me.” Peter let out a laugh, the first one in weeks.

“Yeah I promise not to hit you man.”

“Then talk away shotgun.”

“Why did you kiss Mary, Mike?”

“Well you really get straight to the point don’t you?” Mike let out a sigh. He really didn’t know what to tell Peter. He didn’t want to tell him the truth because not even Mary knew the whole truth.

“We were talking and I was upset because of everything that had happened that day. She just listened and not a lot of people do that and not a lot of people understand when I do and when I was done I just kissed her. I really don’t know why. Mary said that night that she loves you and she never wants to hurt you and now because of me she has. But yeah man, I kissed her and I’m so sorry. Because of me two of my best friends are hurt.” Mike hung his head. Everything was so complicated.

Peter put this hand on Mike’s back.

“Mike I don’t hate you for what you did, I don’t forgive you yet but I don’t hate you. How can I hate you when you are one of my oldest friend. You always made sure your letters got to me when I was moving all those years. Man, lets just try and be friends again alright?” Peter and Mike gave each other a quick hug. Then Mike sat back down.

“You know Peter, Mary coming to you and telling you everything took a lot of courage.”

“I know.” Peter said sitting down again also.

“Well then why are you just sitting here?”

*~~*

Mary laid in her bed. It was two o’clock in the afternoon but she couldn't have cared less. She really didn’t think the pain would ever go away so why get out of bed?

“Mary come on, you really need to get out of bed.” Lilly said standing in Mary’s doorway.

“No I don’t.” Mary said turning over on her other side.

“Come on I’ll make you some broccoli soup and we can watch a movie. A Hard Days Night is on at four.”

“I don’t want any soup and I don’t want to watch a movie. I just want you to leave me alone.”

“Come on Mary you need to eat something.”

“I’m not hungry okay?”

“How can you not be hungry? How can you not be hungry? You haven’t hardly eaten anything anymore. I got you that food last night and you just pick at it. I’ve eaten more food by just looking at it.”

“Can’t you just stay out of my business and leave me alone to bask in my sorrow?”

“Fine I will. You may be heart-broken Mary, but you don’t have to be rude to people.”

A knock at the door interrupted Lilly’s rant. Lilly went and answered it since it didn’t look like Mary was getting out of bed anytime soon. Lilly flung the door open and Peter stood on the other side.

“Hi, um...she’s in her room.” Lilly said in shock. She was going to have to repay Micky for this later.

“Thanks.”

Lilly step to the side to let Peter in. Peter walked into Mary’s look.

“Lilly, I really don’t want to talk about it anymore. I’m not hungry and I don’t want to get out of bed. So just leave me the heck alone. Go butt into someone else’s life.” Mary shouted from under her blanket.

“No one said you had to.”

Mary threw the blanket from her head. Peter stood at the end of her bed. She sat up.

“Hi, sorry for yelling I thought you were someone else.” Mary said bushing her tangled hair out of her face.

“Mary it’s time to talk.”

Mary let out a sigh.“Do you mind if I throw on some clothes?”

“No, take all the time you need.” Peter waited in the living room. A few minutes later Mary walked into the living room fully dress. Lilly was sitting with Peter talking. She got up at the sight of Mary.

“Anyways I’m going to go to...um, the store.” Lilly said leaving Peter and Mary by themselves. Mary sat down across from Peter.

“Well let’s talk.” Mary said.

“Okay, well I had a talk with Mike today. He told me what happened, but I needed to talk to you to make everything right. I’m going to ask you the same question I asked him. Why did you kiss him?”

Mary took in a deep breath. “Oh he kissed me, I didn’t kiss him, well that’s not true. I did kiss him back but it was nothing, I felt nothing, it was not like kissing you, no fire works.” Mary said a little to quickly.

“Why did you kiss him back Mary?” You could see the hurt in Peter’s eyes.

“I don’t know, I guess I just felt like I owed him that much. Like he found me a far-out room mate and because of him I have a job.” Mary looked down in shame. Why was she so stupid?

“I know I should have pushed him away but I didn’t and it’s something I can’t ever take back. If you can never forgive me I understand. I deserve everything that comes to me. I would feel the same way if you kissed another girl.”

Mary tried to blink the tears away but it didn’t work. The tears flowed down her cheeks. After all the crying she had been doing the past few weeks you would have thought she had none left. Peter’s heart broke at seeing the love of his life in such a fragile state. Peter missed Mary so much; he missed her smile and the light she brought into his life. Peter went and sat beside her. He grabbed one of her hands.

“It’s okay Mary, I forgive you.” He leaned in and kissed her. He didn’t realize how much he had missed her kissed. Mary melted into his arms. He pulled away.

“Come on let's get out of here. We’ll go to the beach. You need some sun, babe.”

Mary went and got into her bath suit and they left.

*~~*

Down at the beach Lilly and Micky were building a sand castle. Davy watched close by with some girl strapped to his hip.

“I’m glad Petah finally went over there to talk to her. I hope everything works itself out.” Davy smiled.

“Thank me; I’m the one who told him to stop being a fool.” Micky whined.

“Oh thank you great George Michael Dolenz. How could we ever survive without you?” Lilly got up from the sand and bowed to Micky. Micky got up from the sand also and started chasing Lilly around the beach, Lilly squealing the whole time.

Mary and Peter showed up ten minutes later. Peter had his arm around Mary’s waist and everything looked to be okay. Lilly came running up to them when she saw them. She hid behind Peter.

“Help me Peter.” Lilly giggled. Micky came running up a second later. He stopped right in front of Mary and Peter.“Well, well what have we got here. Lilly, you really think Peter came to save you?”

Micky let out a evil laugh. Peter stepped to the side exposing Lilly. She started screaming again and ran off with Micky on her heels. Peter and Mary looked at each other and rolled their eyes. They walked over to Davy and sat down.

“’Ello guys. This is Olivia.”

“Charmed I’m sure.” Olivia said in an accent stronger then Davy’s.

“Like wise.” Mary once again rolled her eyes. “It’s good to see you two back together, for a minute there I thought there was no ‘ope.”

“We're trying Davy.”

Peter looked at Mary and gave a warm smile which Mary returned. Mary placed her head on Peter’s shoulder. It was going to be hard, but Peter was going to try his hardest. He was not going to lose Mary, not to anyone.
