*It’s My Life*
They all took turns driving. While one drove the other’s slept or at least tried. They all thought Micky was hyper outside of the car but Micky being cooped in car for six days was almost too much for anyone to take. The only stopped for food, gas and to go to the comfort room. They made it to California in six days.
“Do you think we should wake them up?” Micky said getting out of the car.
“No man let them sleep” Davy looked at Mary and Peter sleeping in the back. With Peter’s directions they had found the place with little problems. They only had to ask where they were twice.
“Do you think this guy will be up this late?” Davy asked looking at his watch.
“He better be or we will be waking him up. I’m way past tired man.” Micky let of a yawn. Micky and Davy walked up to the door Davy knocked. No answer, he knocked again a little harder, still no answer. This time Micky knocked much harder. They heard noise coming from the other side.
“Yeah I’m a comin’” came a voice with a thick Texan accent. The door swung open and there stood the tall, black haired Texan, wearing boxers and a white t-shirt.
“What?”
“’Ey I’m Davy Petah’s friend, I guess you must be Mike?” Davy said looking the man over. He was really tall and kind of scared Davy a little.
“Yup and you must be Micky?” Mike nodded in Micky’s direction.
“The one and only, sorry for waking you up so late man”
“It’s alright babe, so where’s Peter at?”
”’Im and Mary ‘is girl are sleepin’ in the car. Didn’t ‘ave the ‘eart to wake them up”
“Let them sleep, I’ll show yeah to your rooms” Mike walked off into the house and Micky and Davy followed. “You guys can have the downstairs bedroom.” Mike pointed in the direction.
“No way am I sharing a room with Davy, he snores man”
“Well so do you Micky” Davy shot back.“Yeah but you snore loud enough to wake the neighbors”
“Do not”
“Do so”
“Alright, alright, Micky you can share a room with me then” ‘Micky seemed like a nice enough guy. It wouldn’t be so bad sharing a room with him’ Mike thought to himself.
“Groovy, so where we headed then?” Micky asked.
“Up the stairs, so if everyone knows where they're sleeping lets go to it.” Mike started up the stairs and Micky followed.
Peter awoke to the familiar sound of waves. He opened his eyes and looked around. He looked over at Mary; she was still out like a light. He didn’t want to wake her but just didn’t want to leave her in the car because it was so hot. He decided he was going to carry her inside, he picked her up and with little struggle got her inside. He put her on the couch, found a blanket and covered her up. She didn’t even stir. No one else seemed to be awake so Peter decided to go for a walk. It had been awhile since he had seen the ocean, plus he needed a little peace after being in the car with Micky for six days. Peter walked out the back door and headed down to the beach.
A loud bang woke Mary from her dream. It always happens when she was having a pleasant dream. She opened her eyes and looked around. Where the heck was she? She then saw Micky coming through the front door with a box.“Good morning sleepy Jean” Mary picked up a pillow and throw it at him. “I forgot how pleasant you are in the mornings” Micky laughed. That going got another pillow tossed at him.
“Mick what time is it?” Mary stretched and then sat up.
“It almost noon babe” Micky put the box down in the pile of others and went back out to get some more. Mary got up off the couch and made her way to the porch. Mike was sitting out there quietly strumming his guitar. He stopped playing when he saw that he had an audience.
“Don’t stop on account of little old me”
“Oh I was done. You must be Mary?” Mike put his guitar down and stood to greet her.
“And you must me Mike, it’s great to finally meet you.”
“I’ve heard a lot about you, it’s great to finally have a face to go with everything.” And quite a face it was. She wasn’t what Mike would call his type but she was beautiful no less, Peter was a lucky guy. She may just change what Mike thought was his type.“You haven’t seen Peter by chance have you Mike?”
“I think he’s down on the beach with Davy.”
“Thanks Mike” Mary made her way down to the beach, she spotted Peter right away. He was sitting by himself watching Davy playing volleyball with a couple of girls. Mary plopped down beside him.
“Hi babe.” Peter gave Mary a good morning kiss.
“Wow this is really beautiful.” Mary looked around at everything that was so new to her.
“I know, it’s just amazing.”
“This is the first time I’ve ever seen the ocean.”
“Really? Wow, well I’m glad I’m here to experience this with you then. Hey I’ve got an idea, go put on your swimsuit and we can go swimming. I put your bag by where you were sleeping.”
“Alright but do you mind if I shower first, after being in the car for six days I just need to get cleaned up.”
“Of course babe, take all the time you need. I’ll be waiting right here.”
“Okay I’ll be back in like thirty minutes tops” Mary gave Peter a peck on the check then ran up to the house. She asked Mike where the bathroom was and headed inside. It was the first time she really got to see the place. It was pretty nice; it had a spirel stair case leading upstairs. The kitchen was kind of small but it would do the job for four men. Other then that it was pretty big and Mike seemed to keep everything really clean. He was going to have a fun time living with Micky, not that Micky was a slob, and he just collected a lot of junk. He would hang on to anything broke or not. Mary could already see signs of Micky’s handy work. He had placed a totem pole in a near by corner, a few old movie posters on the walls and a clock with no hands hung over the front door and that was probably just he beginning. After getting a good look of the place, Mary headed to the bathroom and had a quick shower. She had found her bag just where Peter had said he had put it, and put on her purple and pink polka dot bikini. She headed back down to the beach when she was all done. While Mary had been showering Micky had also made his way down to the beach. He race up to her when she was in his sight.
“Mary what do you think?”
“It’s as beautiful as all those pictures you always brought back for me.” Every summer Micky’s family came down here to visit his Aunt and Uncle. He always would bring pictures back for Mary since she had never been out of her home town.
“Now you don’t need those pictures, you can pretty much looks out you window and see the ocean.”
“I know Mick, it’s real far-out.” Suddenly a blonde girl walked past them and off Micky took.
“I’ll see you later.” Was all she was left with.
“Oh well.” Mary said to herself. She finally got to Peter who was now sitting watching the wave’s crash against the rocks. He seemed to be in deep concretion.
“Peter.” Mary said to get his attention. Peter jumped at his name, then turned and looked at her.
“Hey babe, sorry the ocean is just so beautiful that I get caught up in it sometimes.”
“It’s alright, I get lost in the stars all the time.”
“Which star, its Warren Beatty isn’t it?”
“Oh Peter that’s Micky line.” Mary laughed
“Oh sorry” Peter laughed along. “So how about a swim?”
“Sounds great.”
Mary and Peter sat watching the sunset later that day. They had spent the day swimming and just sitting around the beach. The perfect day. Micky had gone in about an hour ago, since all the girls had gone home for the day. So it was just Mary, Peter and Davy left on the beach, though Davy was not alone, he was talking to some redhead near by. Truth be told they weren’t talking much, well really not talking at all.
“Looks like Davy’s back in the game.” Mary giggled.
“Was he ever really out of the game to begin with?” Peter said snuggling closer to Mary.
“I guess not. I’m so happy I came with you. This has been the best day of my life; California is really groovy, just like I thought it would be.”
“And you’ve only seen the beach babe, wait till you see some of the happening places, there outta sight.”
“I can’t wait. So tomorrow I’ll be meeting this girl I’ll be living with huh?”
“Yeah Mike says she’s real groovy, she works at a music store. Maybe she will be able to get you a job there.”
“That would be far-out if she could Peter.” Mary let out a yawn. The day had taken more out on Mary then she had realized.
“Babe why don’t we head inside, we should get something to eat anyways.”
“Yeah you’re probably right, let’s go.” And they head in.
Inside Micky was watching Batman upside down on the couch, when Mary and Peter came in. Mike was nowhere in sight.
“Hey Micky where’s Mike at?” Peter asked.
“He said I was being too loud so he went out, I don’t know where.” Micky didn’t even pull his eyes from the TV. “Hope he’s okay, he’s not used to so much noise.”
“Well he better get used to it quick cus he’s living with Micky now. But Micky you could try to be a little quieter.”
“Hey I’m not that loud!” Micky said a little too loudly.
“If you say so Mick.” Mary laughed.“How about we see what we have to eat.”
“There’s nothing to eat man, I’ve already looked.” Peter walked over to the fridge and opened it. All that was inside was bread, salami and hot sauce. He went over to the cabinet and opened it. There were two boxes of Corn Flakes but there was no milk in the fridge. “Looks like were eating out Mary, unless you want bread, hot sauce or dry cereal.”
“Eating out it is.” Mary said jumping up from the couch. Davy walked in at that moment; he stalked over to Micky and waved a piece of paper in his face.
“’a I told you I ‘adn’t lost my touch” He walked to his bedroom and shut the door, not even giving Micky time to reply. A minute later he opened the door and popped his head out. “Oh and Peter if your goin’ out pick me up a tuna sandwich” and shut the door again.
The next morning Mary woke before any of the guys. It was still pretty early, just a little after six. She decided it would be a great time to work on a new song, a new song for a new start. She grabbed Peter acoustic guitar from the bandstand and went out on the porch, she didn’t want to wake anyone up. It was a beautiful morning; the sun was just rising over the water casting pinks and purples hews in the sky. Mary smiled to herself; the weather was never this beautiful back home. Mary started strumming the guitar; she stopped to write down some notes and a few lines. A half an hour later she had the beginning of a song. She started singing what she had out loud.
“With the wind blowing through your hairI sigh softly thinking how we got hereWith the past behind us And the future up ahead We’ll find what we all in time”
“That’s nice, what do you call it?” Mary jumped; she didn’t know anyone was listening. Mary turned to see Mike standing in the doorway.
“You scared me; I didn’t know anyone was listening. It’s called, umm The Path Less Taken.”
“Sorry I didn’t mean to interrupt you. Don’t mind me keep on playing.”
“Actually I was done.” Mary lied.
“Well then if you’re done could we talk about Micky?”
“Sure, what about him?”
“Well is he always so......umm what the word?”
“Hyper? Messy? Crazy? Insane?”
“I guess all of them.” Mike laughed.
“Yeah most of the time but you’ll get used to it.”
“Used to it, have you seen all the junk he’s put up around the place?”
“Yeah but I dig it, it gives the place a special touch. Before the place was kinda dull.”
“Some of the stuff is groovy but I guess I’m just going to have to live with it. He is paying for his part of the rent.” Mike said with a sigh.
“Don’t worry Mike, Micky’s a good guy, hyper but a good guy, plus he’s a far-out drummer.” Suddenly Peter appeared at the doorway.
“Morning Mike, morning Mary, well aren’t you two cozy.” Peter sat down beside Mary and put his arm around her.
“Morning.” They said a union.
“So today’s the day you get to meet your new room mate and see your place.” Peter said.
“Great, so Mike what’s this girl like?”
“Lilly, she’s great. She works at Wind Records down on Ocean Street. She’s really into candle making, you’ll like her. After breakfast we can start getting you moved into your new place.”
“Okay.” Mary said happily.
After a quick breakfast of cereal (Peter and Mary had gotten milk last night) they left for Mary’s new place. They grabbed a few boxes and walked up the three flights of stairs to the apartment, since Mike knew where he was going he led. He stopped in front of a door with the number 7 on it.
“Ewe lucky number 7.” Mary said. Mike reached into his pants pocket and withdrew a set of keys, in which he handed to Mary. Mary stood before the door and just stared.
“Well open it already.” Mike laughed. Mary put the key in the lock, turned it and then opened the door. She stepped inside the place. The apartment was everything Mary thought it would be, you walked into the living which had four different colored walls, one purple, one blue, one orange and the other green. There were no couches or chairs just beanbags and pillows scattered the brown shag carpeting. To the left was two doors with beaded curtains covering the doorways and to the right was another door which must have been the bathroom because the door was still intact. At the back of the living room was a half wall which separated the kitchen from the living room. The walls were painted the same green as the living room and against one wall was a row of windows that overlooked a parking lot. Mary walked back into the living room to find that Mike and Peter had gone done for some more boxes. She went over to one of the doors and peek inside; it must have been Lilly’s room because it was too lived in. She went to the next door and went inside. The room was not painted but remained white, all the room had in it was a single bed that was up against the farthest wall, but it did have a huge window in which she could see the ocean. Perfect!
“Hey Mary were did you go?” She heard from the living room.
“Oh I’m in here Peter.” She said poking her head out of the door. Peter and Mike had their arms full of things. Peter and Mike came into the room and set the things down.
“Wow it’s really white huh?” Mike said scratching his head.
“It’s alright after I pay rent I think I’ll have enough to buy some paint, but you have to see the view it makes up for it all.” Mary said walking over to the window.
“It’s wonderful” Peter put his arm around Mary.
“I know I love it.” Mary went and gave Mike a big hug.
“Thank you so much Mike for finding me such an amazing place.”
“Oh umm, yeah it was no problem.” Mike said going red. “Well lets get your stuff in here, we have to be at Lilly’s work in an hour, that when her break time is.” Mike started leaving Mary’s room.
“Okay then but before we see Lilly I promised Micky we would pick him up, he wants to check out the store.” Mary said following Mike.
“Fine but call him and tell him to be ready in 45 minutes.
“I’ll do that right now, you guys go down and get more stuff while I phone him.”
Thirty minutes later they were done and Mary was rummaging through her things trying to find something clean to wear. She finally found what she was looking for, her orange mini dress and put it on.
“Are you almost done in there, we have to leave like now.” Mike shouted from the living room.
“Yup I’m all done.” Mary said walking out of her bedroom.
“Can we leave now?” Mike asked impatiently.
“Almost” Mary walked over to Peter where he was sitting on the floor reading a book. Mary lifted a strand of beads from Peter’s neck and put them on.
“Hey get your own.”
“I would but I can’t find any of mine in my stuff and the ones I came to California in I left in your bathroom, so stop being a baby. Plus I made most of the ones you got on anyways.” Peter stuck his tongue.
“Why how rude.” Mary tried not to laugh. Peter got up and went over to Mary and gave his best angry face. That did it Mary started laughing. She throw her arms around Peter and gave him a kiss, he returned the kiss eagerly.
“If you two are done can we go?” Mary had completely forgotten Mike was there. She turned her head and looked at Mike.
“I guess.” Mary frowned.
“Well if you two don’t come now we’ll be late.”
“Yes dad.” Mary and Peter said in union.
