*I Won't Be the Same without Her*

The months flew by. It was soon March and Mary and Amanda sat in a tiny night club watching Peter, Micky and Davy play on stage. Micky was just starting one of their new songs.

“I thought love was only true in fairy talesMeant for someone else but not for me

Love was out to get me

That's the way it seemed.

Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

And then I saw her face

Now I'm a believer

Not a trace

Of doubt in my mind

I'm in love ooooo whoa

I'm a believer I couldn't leave her if I tried.

I thought love was more or less a givin' thing.

Seems the more I gave the less I got.

What's the use in trying?

All you get is pain.

When I needed sunshine

I got rain.

And then I saw her face

Now I'm a believer

Not a trace

Of doubt in my mind

I'm in love ooooo whoa

I'm a believer I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Love was out to get me

Now that's the way it seemed

Disappointment haunted all my dreams

And then I saw her face

Now I'm a believer

Not a trace

Of doubt in my mind

I'm in love ooooo whoa

I'm a believer I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Then I saw her face

Now I'm a believer

Not a trace

Of doubt in my mind

Said I'm a believer

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

I'm a believer”

They finished up the song, then came and sat with the girls. A waitress came over to the table.

“What do you boys want to drink? It’s on the house.”

“Three orange pops” Micky replied.

“Micky I don’t want orange pop” Davy whined.

“Those are all mine man. Get whatever you want.” Everyone laughed. Peter and Davy ordered their drinks and the waitress left.

“Peter are you sure you don’t want any of the money from this gig?” Davy asked. “No I’m sure. I don’t really need the money, plus that’s not why I’m in the band man. I’m in it for the music.”

Mary looked over at Micky. He had a huge smile on his face. Mary hadn’t ever seen him this happy. She was so happy for him.

“Hey Peter hunny can I use your guitar?” Mary whispered in Peter’s ear.

“Sure babe”

“I’ll be back guys” Mary excused herself from the table. She walked up on stage and grabbed Peter’s guitar. She grabbed the microphone and placed it in the middle of the stage. She grabbed a stool and sat in front of the microphone. She shielded her eyes from the light, cleared her voice and spoke into the microphone.

“Hi everyone I’m Mary while the Monkees are resting” There was a cheer from all the girls. “I’ll be singing one of my own songs.” With that she started playing. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath and began to sing.

“There’s a little place a crossed the street

Everyone goes there for a bite to eat

Or the odd time and good stiff drink

Forget all your worries

It’s time to be who you are

Forget what you’ve heard

It’s alright to be who you are

But justttt be you.

The man down the street stands righteous on the corner

Telling everyone who they are inside

Not realizing he’s been the fake one all along

Forget all your worries

It’s time to be who you are

Forget what you’ve heard

It’s alright to be who you are

But just be you.

I knew this girl

Pretty as a picture

Not quite realizing what she was doin’ to herself

Not knowing what tomorrow had in store for her

Forget all your worries

It’s time to be who you are

Forget what you’ve heard

It’s alright to be who you are

But justttt be you.

As I walk down the street

With time pasting me by

I close my eyes and breathe

Hopin’ for the courage to be who I am

Forget all your worries

It’s time to be who you are

Forget what you’ve heard

It’s alright to be who you are

But justttt be you.

Just be you.”

Mary stood up, put the guitar down and walked off stage. She strolled over to where everyone was sitting. She stood by Peter.

“So what’cha think?” Mary asked biting her lower lip. Everyone started talking at once.

“Groovy man”

“I dug it”

“Great job Mary

“Outta sight”

“Hang on, hang on. One at a time” Mary tried yelling over them, it was little use.

“It was outta sight Mary. I’m glad you did that tonight.” Peter got up and threw her into his arms. He then gave her a huge kiss which got ‘ewes’ from everyone.

“It was groovy Mar.” Micky gave Mary a pat on the back. He then started walking towards the stage.

“Luv it was out of this world” Davy also got up and started walking towards the stage. Peter gave Mary a kiss and then joined the rest on stage.

The night soon came to an end. Davy and Amanda left Mary, Peter and Micky to pack up the stuff in Mary’s mom’s truck. And with Micky’s car in the shop Mary also had to take him home also.

“Oh I could just kill Davy” Micky grumbled trying to get push Peter’s amp into the back of the truck.

“Oh don’t be so harsh Micky. Most of the stuff is ours anyways.” Peter tried pushing the amp just as hard a Micky. “Geeze man this thing won’t budge.”

“Here I’ll get into the back and lift” Mary crawled into the back and lifted with all she had. They finally got into the truck after much pushing and pulling and left.

Mary dropped Micky off at home. It was now time to take Peter home. Mary parked in front of Peter’s house. She turned off the engine.

“You guys were great tonight. I’ve never seen Micky so happy.”

“I don’t know he seems pretty happy all the time” Peter laughed. “But you were the great one tonight. I’d like to hear some more of you stuff.”

“Thanks, I’ll have to take you up on the offer sometime.”

“Do you want to come in? My brother’s, sister and folks are out for the night.” Peter said after a moment’s silence. Mary found that Peter’s parents were never really at home and Peter’s brother’s and sister spent most of their time at a babysitter’s. Mary still hadn’t met them.

“I’d love to.” Mary smiled. Once inside Peter walked into the living room. Peter walked over to the fireplace and turned it on. It was not a real one but it did the same job. Peter sat down the sheep skin rug in front of it. Mary joined him.

“You know I’ve always hated this rug.” Peter said.

“Well I do too. Talk about no purpose for killing an animal.” Peter laid down. Mary laid down and put her head on his chest.

“I love you Mary” Peter said stroking her hair.

“I love you too” She closed her eyes and soon fell into a deep sleep.

Mary was awakened to the ringing of the telephone. She was confused; she didn’t have a telephone in her room. She opened her eyes and realized she was laying in Peter’s living room. Mary sat up with a start. She looked around and didn’t see Peter but heard mumbling coming from the kitchen. She got up and went to the source. Peter was sitting at the table talking on the telephone.

“Alright Micky, yeah we’ll be there soon, okay, yup bye.” Peter hung up the phone and just stared at it. Mary went up and put her arms around him.

“Good morning babe” She whispered into his ear.

“Morning Mary, why don’t you have a seat?” Mary looked at him funny but took at seat anyways.

“What did Micky want? He’s up early” Mary said noticing it was only a little after seven.

“Umm he told me that he got a call from Davy about a half an hour ago. He said that he wants us to meet him at the hospital.” Peter looks down at the table.

“Why do we need to meet him at the hospital?”

“Because Davy’s in there”

“Why is Davy in the hospital?”

“Amanda and Davy were in a car accident last night”

“Is Amanda okay?”

Peter shook his head ‘no’.

“Is she dead?”

Peter shook his head ‘yes’. If Mary wasn’t already sitting she would have fainted.

“What do you mean she’s dead? She can’t be dead, I just saw her like seven hours ago.” Tears were now pouring down Mary’s face. Peter got up from his chair and walked over to Mary. Mary flung herself into his arms. Peter held her until she had no more tears left to cry. Mary let go of Peter and looked up at him.

“I think we should get to the hospital.” With that they left.

Once at the hospital Peter went to find Davy’s room number.

“Yes that’s right, David Jones.”

“That’s room 632 on the 6th room sweetheart” The nurse said sweetly.

They found Davy’s room easily. The door was shut, so Peter knocked.

“Come in” came Davy’s voice from the other side of the door. They entered the room and saw Davy laying on a bed looking out the window. He was quite a sight. His head was in a bandage and one side of his face was black and blue. He also had a cast on his right arm.

“Micky’s ‘ere, ‘e just went down to get us some tea” He didn’t even pull his eyes from the window. Peter sat down in the chair beside Davy’s bed, Mary chose to stay standing.

“How you doing man?”

“I’ll live” Davy pulled his eyes from the window for a second, and then looked back out the window. Mary decided it was time to find out what happened, she walked over and sat down on the bed beside Davy.

“Davy can you tell me what happened? Mary asked quietly.

“After we left the club last night Amanda and I went for a drive.....................

“Davy I don’t want to go home just yet. Let’s just drive and drive and drive.”

“Luv are you fighting with your dad again?”

“Yeah I am, geeze Davy I can’t take him much longer. He just doesn’t understand my art; he keeps on saying that it’s a waste of time and that I should become a secretary. A secretary, a secretary! Can you see me as a secretary, I can’t even type that well.”

“Amanda your art work is amazing and if he can’t see that then I don’t know what wrong with ‘im..............

“So we drove around town for like an hour.............

“Babe I think I should get home now. My dads going to be mad that I stayed out so late”

“’ome it is then” Davy said turning the car around.............

“About ‘alf way to ‘er ‘ouse it started pouring. I stopped at a light and went to make a left turn. A car went right through the light and plowed right into Amanda’s side of the car. When I woke up I was ‘ere and she was dead” Davy stopped talking and put his face in his hands. Mary pulled Davy into her arms and hugged him tight. “I wish I ‘ad died and not ‘er” Davy pulled away from Mary.

“Don’t say that man. Be thankful that you’re alright. Think about your Grandfather and if you had died what it would have done to him.” Peter gave Davy a pat on the back. The door opened and in came Micky with four teas.

“Hey Mary, Peter I got you guys a tea too. Thought you’d be here by now.” Micky handed everyone their teas. Everyone sat there in silence for what could have been a minute or an hour. Finally Micky broke the silence.

“So man with your hand in that cast how are you going to play your tambourine or maracas? Not that your any good or anything”

Mary gave Micky a punch in the arm for that comment.

“Hey I was just joking, don’t have to beat me up over it” Micky said as he rubbed him arm. Davy laughed and so did Peter and Mary. Mary, Peter and Micky stayed till visiting time was over, then all went their separate ways.

The next couple days Mary went around in a daze. She really didn’t remember much of the funeral but it was probably good that she didn’t. Your mind blocks things out for a reason. She did hear it was nice though. Mary returned to school a week after the funeral. Davy choose to stay out of school longer for his own reasons. Mary made sure that she called him every night to see how of was doing. He needed all the friends he could get at a time like this. He had told Mary the night before that he would be back to school within the next two weeks, Mary wasn’t so sure he should be coming back to school so quickly, but was glad he was coming back.

Mary didn’t see anyone till lunch. Peter wasn’t in Math for some unknown reason. She entered the cafeteria and looked around for a familiar face. Right away she spotted Micky and Peter sitting at the back. Mary walked over and sat down beside Peter. They seemed to be in a discussion about some English test.

“Gosharoonie Peter I can’t believe you got such a good mark, I found that test way hard.”

“Well it’s called studying man.” Peter laughed.

“I did study; I just think that Mr. Humble hates me.”

“If you didn’t always goof around maybe he wouldn’t.”

“I can’t help it if his class bore me, like geeze man who wants to learn about some 15th century poet?”

“I do” Mary said finally putting her two cents in. She had been avoiding people since the funeral. Peter had called a few times to check in on her but she had told her mom to tell him she was sleeping. Yes she felt bad about it, but she just couldn’t let people know how upset she really was.

“Me too man” Peter added.

“Well I don’t, so Mary how are you?”

“I’m good, what about you two?”

“I’m groovy” Micky nodded.

“I’m good too babe” Peter put his arm around Mary’s waist. Wow Mary didn’t realize how much so had missed Peter. She lend in and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

“That’s good” The rest of the lunch hour was spent in meaningless conversation. The bell rang and no one moved. After a moments silence Micky spoke,

“Well I should get to class. I’ll see you later guys” With that Micky left. Mary and Peter were left staring at each other.

“I should get to class too” Mary said pulling her eyes from Peter’s.

“I’ll walk you to class if you like?”

“Sure” They walked half way to her class in silence, and then Mary finally couldn’t take it any longer.

“Peter, I’m really sorry that I haven’t returned any of your calls” Mary stopped dead in her tracks.

“I know, I’m not mad, you just lost someone you loved. I just want you to know that I love you and I’m here if you need anything at all.” Mary smiled and gave Peter a hug. Peter return to the hug eagerly.

“Thanks Peter for being so understanding.” Mary didn’t seem to realize just how much Peter really did love her.

Davy returned to school late in the next week. He seemed to be alright, quieter but alright all the same. Everybody did their best to not mention Amanda. Inside Davy was taking it harder then anyone even realized. Amanda was the first girl Davy had truly loved; she had changed him for the better. Without her, life was hard, harder then Davy could ever have imagined. Everyone in his life seemed to leave when he truly needed them. Life for him didn’t seem to have anymore purpose. After gradation Davy had planed on asking Amanda to marry him. He had been saving up for a ring and had almost had enough. Now everything was ruined.
