Chapter 1: Changes

With another school year starting Mary Lane stepped off of the bus and headed towards the place she had grown to love.

"I hope this year is different" Mary sighed as she made her way through the crowd of students. She looked about for anybody that looked recognizable; she then caught sight of her friend Amanda up ahead.

"Amanda?" She bellowed trying to make her way closer. Amanda heard her friends cry and started making her way towards Mary. Mary stepped out of the crowd of students and lingered in the side lines.

"Hey, what's happening?" Amanda said once she came to Mary's side.

"I was just thinking about this new school year. I'm hoping it's better then the rest." It's not that Mary high school experience had not been groovy; it was just not what Mary anticipated. Her life was uninteresting. Her friends and she always did the same things. It was either parties, roller skating, studying, or just hanging around the local burger place. Plus Mary hadn?t had a genuine boyfriend since grade 10. She dated but every guy just seemed to be the same. She had given up on love a long time ago. It?s not that Mary was unattractive. In fact she was quite pretty. She dressed like the average hippie of the time. She wore her hair long and straight. Her hair was a light blonde and her eyes were a crystal blue. And she had a pretty nice body. She knew why she was single, she was just too timid. She didn't know how to act around guys she dug.

"Don't worry Mar, this year will be far-out. It has to be, its our last year"

"For our sakes I hope so Manda" Mary replied putting her hand on Amanda's shoulder.

"So what classes do you have?" Amanda asked snatching Mary's schedule out of her hand. "Well good we have two classes together English and Art. The year is already starting off good."

"Groovy" Mary smiled. At that moment the first bell rang. "I better get to Math, Mr. Heartbomb hates it when I'm late" Mary said her goodbyes then turn and proceeded to Math.

Mary ran all the way to class hoping she'd not be tardy. Just as she got in the door the second bell rang. She let out a sigh of relief.

"Nice of you to grace us with you presence Miss Lane" Mr. Heartbomb said turning from the blackboard.

"I'm not late. The last bell just rang" Mary said with a smirk on her face.

"Just sit down Miss Lane!" Mary sat down in the seat closest to the window which unfortunately was in the first row. Mr. Heartbomb gave out the work to the class. Mary looked down at her textbook and opened it to the page instructed. Mr. Heartbomb sat down and started reading his newspaper. Seeing that he was busy, Mary put her head down on the desk and was soon in a daydream involving George Harrison. Awhile later a knock on the door snapped Mary back into reality. She lifted her head to see who had so impolitely interrupted her fantasy. Mary looked towards the door and when she saw the person her mouth dropped. The guy that had entered the class was straight out of one of Mary's fantasies. He had light brown hair and spectacular brown eyes. His hair was about chin length and he had beautiful full lips. He had on white pants, a loose fitting orange top and moccasin boots. Around his neck he wore two strands of love bead similar to the one Mary were wearing.

"Can I help you?" Mr. Heartbomb asked putting down the newspaper he was reading.

"Um I'm Peter Tork; I'm in your class. Sorry I'm late my Mother had car problems"

"Yes, yes I see your name on my list. You may take a seat Peter" Peter made his way towards Mary. She turned so Peter didn?t see her gawking at him. Peter sat in the seat to Mary's left.

"Just open you text to page 51 and do questions 3 through 60." Mr. Heartbomb then returned to his newspaper and the class soon returned to their work. Awhile later there was a tap on Mary's shoulder.

"You don't have a pencil I can borrow do you?" Peter asked looking Mary directly in the eyes, his eyes boring in so hard Mary could almost feel it.

"Yeah I think I do. Just let me check" Mary could feel her face getting red. She looked through her bag and soon found a pencil. She handed it to Peter.

"Thanks. By the way I'm Peter" He put his hand forward for Mary to shake. Mary took his hand and shook it.

"I'm Mary. It's nice to meet you" She said barley over a whisper.

"It's nice meeting you too Mary" Peter smiled. Peter then turned and started his work, leaving Mary to let her imagination run wild.
