Chapter 13

Soon it was time for the other three Monkees to wake up. Peter poured himself a bowl of cereal. Davy kept picking at his cereal. Mike noticed this and frowned.

"What's the matter?"

"Nothing." Davy mumbled.

"Something's the matter." Peter noted.

"I don't want to talk about it." Davy said sounding more angry than he meant too.

"Sorry!" Peter cried.

"So how's Sarah?" Micky asked.

"Why don't you ask Africa?" Davy blurted out.

"What?"

"She maybe moving there." Davy mumbled.

"We should throw her a going away party. I mean if she decides to go." Peter said quietly.

"That's a great idea Peter! You've fixed all my problems!" Davy barked.

"Micky why don't you and Peter go outside. I want to talk to Davy. Alone." Mike said.

"Um...sure. Come on Pete." Micky said.

He and Peter quickly left. Mike sat across the table from Davy.

"Look Davy. I know you're angry. But why take it out on Peter. He was just trying to help."

Davy sighed. "I know."

"Did Sarah say when she was leaving? I mean if she decides too."

"I left before she could tell me. I know it's soon. I told her to have fun."

"How'd you say it?" Mike asked.

"I was mad okay?" Davy asked.

"Yelling at her won't help. You have to understand Sarah isn't trying to hurt you. She's crazy about you. But she also spent the past two years in the dark. All Sarah wants to do is do something meaningful with her life."

"Why can't she do that here?" Davy asked.

"When you first wanted to come here , how'd your grandfather feel about it?" Mike asked.

"He wasn't happy. He was worried I'd get hurt but he knew it was what I wanted so he let me go." Davy said.

"Because he loves you. Right?" Mike asked.

"Right." Davy agreed.

"And deny it all you want but I think a part of you loves Sarah. And if you love her, you need to let her go."

"It's hard Mike. I mean girls look at me, and see cute little Davy. Sarah saw past that, and saw the real me. She's the first girl I've truly cared about. And now she's leaving." Davy felt a lump form in his throat.

Mike walked next to him squeezing his shoulder.

"I know it's hard. But you can still write. And who knows, she could come back. But if she chooses to leave and you let it end like this you'll regret it for the rest of your life."

Davy looked up at him. "What should I do?"

"I think you know." Mike smiled.

Davy nodded. "Thanks Mike."

"Anytime. I'm always here. For advice and a shoulder to cry on."

"I have a feeling I'm going to need both soon." Davy replied feeling tears form in his eyes.

He grabbed his jacket and left the pad. He apologized to Peter before he left assuring him he wasn't angry at him.

Peter felt bad for him. "He's going to have a tough time here soon." he told the others.

"We'll be here." Micky said with a sad smile.

Davy searched everywhere for Sarah but couldn't find her. Until he went to the park. He found her sitting on a swing. Her eyes were red rimmed from crying.

"Hi."

She looked up at him. "Hi."

"Look I'm really sorry. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that. I mean you were trying to make an important decision, and instead of being supportive, I acted like a jerk. I'm sorry." Davy said softly.

"It's okay. What do you think I should do?"

"I think you should go."

"Really?" Sarah asked smiling.

"Yeah, I mean you're right. People in Africa need all the help they can get."

"But what about us?" Sarah asked filling a lump form in her throat as well.

"We'll always be friends. No matter what okay?"

Sarah nodded as she wiped away a tear. "Okay."

"When do you leave?"

"In a few weeks."

"Then I guess we better not spending them fighting." Davy smiled.

"Yeah we better not." Sarah let out a light laugh.

"I can't believe she's leaving." Micky sighed.

"Me either. Poor Davy huh?" Peter asked.

"Yeah, kid's in for a tough couple of weeks. But like I said we'll be here." Mike said. He sounded worried.

"Stop talking about me." Davy flashed a sad smiled.

"How you holding up, shortstuff?" Micky asked.

"I'm trying."

"That's all you can do. I think I know something that might make you feel alittle better. We throw a surprise party." Peter smiled.

"I heard party! When and where?" Micky asked.

"Here in two weeks." Mike said.

"That sounds like a great idea. Sarah'll love that!" Davy grinned.

"We can get her a bunch of balloons from all the colors of the rainbow." Peter flashed a dimple grin.

"And get a big cake with lots of chocalate ice cream!" Micky grinned.

Davy wrinkled his nose up, making a face.

"Don't worry. We'll get some vanilla." Mike laughed.

"Strawberry too?" Peter asked.

"Yes Peter." the others said.

Peter grinned. "Are you feeling better?"

"Yeah, alittle." Davy said.

"Davy you're job is to keep her busy. Do not let her near this place the day before she leaves. That's when we'll throw it. Keep her busy until seven that night." Mike said.

"Gotcha."

"Micky, you're job is to get the cake and ice cream. And here's the most important job of all. This goes for everyone. Do not let Babbit know about the P word. He heards the P word, and we'll never hear the end of it." Mike warned.

"What's the P word?" Peter whispered.

"Party." Davy whispered back.

BANG! BANG! "Open up in there!"

"Man he has good ears." Micky frowned.

"I heard it! I heard party!" Mr.Babbit yelled.

"No you didn't. You heard potty. I uh said I have to go...potty." Mike stuttered.

"What?!"

Davy sighed as he opened the door. "Mr. B. You did hear the P word. You see my girlfriend is moving away, and we wanted to throw her a party."

Mr. Babbit's face softened. "I'm sorry to hear that Jones. Sure you boys can have a party."

"Thanks Mr.B!" Davy grinned.

"No sweat. My only rule is you boys not sing. You do that and you can have your party."

"Gee thanks." Davy said with a groan.

"The man's all heart." Micky quipped.

"Yep."
