Chapter 6
"What a night!" Davy groaned loudly.
"You think you had a rough night? I had to listen to my parents
lecture me half the night. They treat me like a china doll. If I'm
left on my own, I'll break." Sarah let out a frustrated sigh.
"I'm sorry to hear that. If it makes you feel any better, I had to
sleep in our car."
"Well that helps a little." Sarah teased.
Mike walked over towards Davy and Sarah. "Hello."
"Why's your neck swollen?" Davy frowned.
"Bee sting. Remember what we agreed on last night?"
"Yes."
"Well, if anyone even mentions the word camping will get hit." Mike
grumbled as he rubbed his neck.
"Yes Papa Nez." Davy smiled.
"Or even smiles about this rotten trip." Mike said giving Davy a
glare.
"Hey, if you think I'm bad, you should of heard what Micky said
about you last night." Davy laughed.
"What did Micky say about me?!" Mike demanded.
"I've said too much. Come along Sarah." Davy said quickly taking
Sarah's hand.
"It was nice to meet you." Sarah said.
"What did he say about me?!"
"Walk faster." Davy said giggling.
"I think you're safe." Sarah laughed as she let go of Davy's hand.
"I'm a deadman when I get back to the campsite. You know that
right?" Davy asked.
"I wouldn't say that. A royal beating is proubly all they'll do to
you. What did Micky say about Mike?"
"Nothing." Davy giggled.
"You're mean!" Sarah exclaimed laughing.
"Am not."
"Are too. Here I am telling Janet what a nice guy you are. And-"
"Please don't hurt me." Davy said cutting her off.
The two grew quiet for a moment. There was a question Davy had been
wanting to ask for quite sometime now but didn't know how to ask it.
Finally he just took the chance and asked.
"How did you lose your site? If you don't mind my asking."
"Well it's kind of a hard story. I've always had eye problems all my
life. Two years ago I lost my sight completely."
"Isn't there anything the doctors can do?" Davy asked.
"Well my doctor hopes that in the future he maybe able to do surgery
on my eyes. But he isn't sure if that'll help."
"I'm sorry." Davy said softly.
"For what?"
"Well what happened to you, you know."
"Everyone has things they have to overcome." Sarah replied.
"That's true. When I was fourteen my parents died in a car accident.
It took a long time for me to overcome that. I loved them so much,
and when they died I didn't think the pain would ever go away. But
eventually it did."
"I'm sorry about your parents. You must miss them."
"Yeah, I do sometimes. Like when I sing a song I know my mother
would've liked. Or if I watch a horse race I think of my father.
That was his thing. He thought I would've made a good jockey because
of my size." Davy said. His voice grew softer.
"But you overcame it. Just like I had to overcome my blindness. Let
me tell you. It didnot happen over night. For six months all I did
was stay in bed and cry. Then one day I woke up and got sick of
feeling sorry for myself. I realized yes I'm blind, but I can also
hear. I can talk and walk. I can do everything, everyone else can
do. I just can't see myself doing it. That helped alot. I also have
a cane but I rarely use it. I'm used to this area. I also count my
steps."
"What about your folks?" Davy asked.
"If they had their way I would still be in my room. They mean well
but they drive me crazy sometimes. If I'm more than five minutes
late they freak out. They also have to know where I am at all
times." Sarah let out another frustrated sigh.
"You're right. I think they mean well. But they should give your
more freedom." Davy noted.
"Tell them that!" Sarah cried . Then let out a soft sigh. "I'm
sorry. I shouldn't be taking it out on you. So what do you want to
do now?"
"Let's just keep walking. I'll lead."
"Davy, I've lived here my whole life. I know the way." Sarah said
sounding alittle annoyed.
"Sorry. I'm just trying to help."
Sarah smiled as she took his hand. "Okay Davy. Lead the way." she
said softly.
