If I ever get to Saginaw again,
A locale that's somewhat off the beaten track.
Get to see the girl I never saw again
Who must know why I have never ventured back.
We were young,
And so alive
And now I wonder if she'd cling to me,
Become my very own as she did then,
If I ever get to Saginaw again.
Taryn waiting anxiously inside with her son, David, and her best friend Shaun for someone she hadn't seen in eight years. She knew he really didn't want to come back to Saginaw after what happened, but she convinced him to come to Saginaw to see his son for the first time. They had kept in touch by letters throughout the years and sometimes by phone.
Soon she heard a car pull into the drive way and heard his slow footsteps approach the front door. She heard a knock on the door and she told him to come in. When she saw his face as he walked in, she was breathtaken. Even though he looked a little older, she knew why she had fallen in love to begin with and possibly still in love with, but still hurt about him leaving.
"Hey David. I have got to go. Sorry. Bye, Tarry," Shaun said.
"Bye, Shaun. See you tomorrow," Taryn said.
"Bye, Uncle Shaun," David said.
Shortly after they said goodbye, Shaun left. She walked over to her son and said, "David this is a friend of mine, whose name is also David. Stay here and be good. Color some pictures for Mommy."
"I still can't believe you named him after me," Davy said in his thick British accent. Being away from her for eight years, he couldn't believe how much he was still in love with her, but would she take him back if he asked. Smelling the perfume that lingered from her body made him feel intoxicated.
"It was the only name that seemed to be right at the time," she said.
"I shouldn't stay here long. You know your parents don't like me. They probably don't want me to be around my own son," Davy said.
"Well if they don't they are just going to have to deal with it," she said.
Davy was a little taken aback by this: Taryn had never said anything or stood up to her parents in her life except dating him, but what he didn't know is that for a long time she had been planning on moving from Saginaw from her mother.
Finally he said, "He such a beautiful kid, just like you."
"Actually he reminds me a bit of you. In more than just looks," she said. "If you want to talk to him go ahead that why I asked you here."
She watched him walk over to their son. Davy began to ask him what he was doing and join him. Her heart wanted him back in her life. She wanted him with her and her mother had destroyed that, plus the fact that Davy got in trouble all the time. They could have been together now. She still remembered the night he told her that he had to leave.
------------
If I ever get to Saginaw again,
It won't be in Spring with meadows turning green.
It won't be to tangle with the law again.
And it won't be with someone one only seventeen,
Who gave her love,
And made me hers.
And when you find the one you're dreaming of
Who thinks to ask, "How old is love?"
Not "when"
You may never get to Saginaw again.
(Flashback)
They met at a street near his place. She had just found out she was pregnant. Her mom found out shortly after and was livid, but her mother was making her keep the child. What made it even worse that shortly they had sex together her mother found out as well.
She saw him walking towards his car wearing his worn out black leather jacket. She knew something was wrong by the way he was walking and when he tried to say something to her. The first thing she thought was that he got into trouble again.
She kissed him deeply and passionately, but then he pulled away and she said, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong," he lied.
"Bull crap, Davy. Something's wrong and I know it," Taryn said.
"All right. I was taken to the police station and interrogated, but it wasn't me because I was with you at the time. Even though it wasn't me they told I should leave before I get into anymore trouble. Plus you know your mum won't like the fact that I was taken to the police station whether I did it or not," Davy said.
Even though it was a warm spring evening, Taryn felt her blood run cold and she mustered all the strength to say, "You're leaving...me? Are you going to come back?" To get me, she finished in her head.
"I don't know. I might not come back," he said touching her cheek continued, "But remember that I love you and I always will."
"I love you, too," she said as she started to cry. Then he kissed her their last kiss and wiped her tears away.
As he started to walk away she asked, "How old is love?"
He knew he was breaking her heart by doing this, but he wanted to come back and if he came back when he was no longer getting into any trouble. He remembered each time she had said that to him: their first date, when they first told each other how they felt, the first time the made love, and just now. All he knew to say was, "Eternal."
Then he just walked away and inside he was hurting as well. After that all that he thought was she ever going to forgive him.
Taryn just stood watching him walk away as best she could, because she just let the tear drops fall. Once she calmed herself down enough to go anywhere, she walked to the home of her best friend Shaun. She told him everything that happened and cried herself to sleep. He woke her up so he could drive her home. Sometime passed and she told her mom that she was planning keeping the baby and not just because her mom told her she had too. She wanted to keep the baby, because she wanted a part of David with her at all time.
(End of Flashback)
----------------------------
Even though she became pregnant at 17, she never once regretted any of the trouble she got into with him. It was actually quite fun doing something her mother never approved. Maybe that was half the appeal of Davy.
Soon Davy came up to her and asked, "Where's the bathroom, luv?"
"Down the hall on your right," she answered.
"Thanks," he said. He thought to himself that when she asked for him to come back that she also had to convince him. She didn't have to convince him too much, because he wanted to come back, but when was the problem. He really didn't want to, but wanting to be with her and his son outweighed anything else.
In the living room, Taryn was contemplating whether to tell her son, that the man visiting them was his father. She had shown him pictures and told him about his father. Before he came she did check her other mailbox in another town to see if he had sent her anything. She hadn't received anything from Davy today.
She had two mailboxes because her mother had the tendency to ask the post office lady to show her anything that came from Davy. She never actually heard her admit she was doing that, but Taryn knew when only the letters coming from Davy were being opened.
She went over to her son and asked, "Do you like him?"
"Yes, mommy he's nice. He's almost as nice as Uncle Shaun. Do you like my picture?" little David asked.
"Yes. It's pretty. Who are all these people on here?" she asked because there were three people in the picture.
"The little one is me, this one is you, and this one is the man who is visiting us," he said.
"Why did you put him in the picture?" she asked just a little surprised that he did that.
"Because you seem to like him that's why," he answered.
Davy began walking back and he heard the conversation from when she asked about the picture he drew. When she noticed Davy coming back, she motioned him to come next to her.
As soon as he was next to her, she figured it was time to tell her son the truth, "David, this man is you daddy." She almost cried saying it, but when she saw the smile that went across her son's face she knew it was okay.
Little David couldn't contain he excitement and yelled, "He is! Wow great. Now I don't have to get Grandpa or Uncle Shaun to come to school for day's when everyone Dad's come to school!" Then he got up, walked over, and sat down on Davy's lap. He didn't even ask why he was never there nor did it bother him. He started to talk more to Davy than when he first sat down to draw with him.
Soon it was time for little David to go to bed, "David, it's bedtime. Get up and go to your room. What story do you to be read to you tonight?"
"Mom, I want Dad to tuck me into be and read to me. Is that okay?" said little David feeling like he needed to ask for permission to have his father read to him.
"That's okay. That's of course if he wants to," she said.
"I'll go. You go to your room and relax a bit. I'll be there after awhile to talk," Davy said.
Davy walked with his son to little David's room. He tucked him in and asked which story he wanted read to him. Little David wanted to be read Jack and the Beanstalk. Taryn listening to all of this knew that her son would fall asleep before the story was over.
She went to her wardrobe and picked out some warm pajamas to wear. Soon she heard David's footsteps coming down the hall and he opened the door just as she walked away from the wardrobe.
"Is everything ok?" she asked as he walked towards the bed.
"Yeah, he fell asleep before I finished the story," he said.
"I figured he would. He tends to do that," she said and started to undress.
After Davy had turned around as to not watch her dress and she turned around to get her pajama top, she said, "You don't have to turn around, David. It's nothing you haven't seen before." Besides it's my room she thought.
Then Davy spoke, "I know I just want to be polite. Part of the reason I came to talk to you here was to ask you where I'm to sleep, if the time comes?"
"You can stay in here on my bed and don't argue. Trust me, you would rather sleep there, because the couch in the living room is uncomfortable," she said.
"Well I guess that's great, because I really wanted to talk to you about certain things," he said.
"Hold that thought, would you like to help me check outside the house?" she asked.
"Yes I will, but why?"
"I've had someone prowling around and almost broke into the house. I knew exactly who it is: an ex of mine. Dad helped get me get charges pressed against him and he was in prison. Now he's on parole."
"Shall we start? I want to make sure everything is okay for you and him."
As they walked out the house with a couple flashlights, Taryn said, "Thanks for they money you send as usual, but as I have told you before you don't have to send it."
"You're welcome. I want to send it to you. I just feel if I'm not here that I should send you something to help take care of you two."
They walked around the house two times before they walked back into the house, but Taryn had the feeling that she was being watched and she couldn't shake it off. They went into her room and lay down on her bed. They talked about his friends back in California, his job, her job, their son, and anything that came up.
"Um did you date anyone else?" Davy asked.
"Yes, Shaun and I gave it a try, but it didn't work out," she said.
"Why?" "Well for starters it was too weird. We are so close we're like brother and sister."
"Anyone else?"
"Yeah, anyone my mother thinks is good for me, but can we not talk about that anymore? I'm actually getting tired."
"Good night then."
"Good night, Davy."
