Chapter 13

As time moved on that day, the four Monkees and three women sat down for lunch and discussed what would be done next. Considering that no real harm was done, the Monkees decided against any sort of retaliation. In fact, they were feeling so high-spirited that they generously offered to do a concert at no charge.

"I think a concert is good enough payment for their counsel, eh guys?" Davy smiled.

The others had to agree, and the women were overjoyed.

"Oh, guys, thank you! Thank you so much!" Jan exclaimed with tears of joy.

"No, thank you!" Mike smiled, then got up from the table. "I think we'd better rehearse, men."

The Monkees went up to the stage and rehearsed, and the girls watched them.

"This is so exciting!" Ginny grinned. "I'm watching all four Monkees perform right before my very eyes."

"I can't believe it either." Jan said.

"It's a dream come true for me!" Sara smiled.

"What do you mean? We've never done this song in a G!" Mike said.

"We're a little older now, Mike. Our voices have changed!" Peter replied.

"I think G sounds fine to me." Davy said.

"No, no, no! G's all wrong!" Mike said.

"Mike, don't start again!" Micky said, rolling his eyes.

Mike opened his mouth to argue, then looked down at the three women who had petrified looks on their faces. He shut his mouth, gave a small smile and shrugged.

"Maybe you're right, Pete. We'll try G."

All three woman sighed with relief when Mike decided not to have the last word.

"Man, I thought they were going to get into it again," Ginny said with relief.

"Me too. You know, maybe it is really that hard for them to get along, but I'm glad they are trying at least," Jan said.

"Do you think it will last?" Sara said.

"I don't know, but I hope they can keep it together until after tomorrow anyway. We don't want a huge fight to break out during the convention," Ginny said. After the Monkees had finished their song, all three women applauded.

"That was wonderful," Jan said, as she jumped up and down like a prepubecent cheerleader.

"Peter, you were right. That song did sound much better in the key of G. Those high notes are getting to be murder for me anymore. I guess since I had never played it in that key before, it just seemed strange. I'm sorry," Mike said.

"That's ok. I wasn't sure how it would sound either, I just figured it might work," Peter said.

"Shall we do "Randy Scouse Git" next?" Micky asked.

"You can still scat?" Mike asked in amazement.

"You better believe I can still scat. That's easy! The hard part is remembering the words," Micky admitted.

"You're the one who wrote the blasted thing. How can you forget your own composition?" Davy asked.

"I was just kidding. I sing that one all the time when I'm on tour with CoCo. I've got to get in my silly mode for tomorrow when the fans are here," Micky said.

"Oh yeah, well come on, we've got less than 24 hours to put this show together. Let's jam," Peter said as he got his guitar pick ready.
