The next morning, the three girls arrived very early so as to beat whichever Monkee would show up first. Even though they were going to tell the truth today, they wanted to be the ones to break it to them and not have them find out by running into each other.
"I admit it." Ginny said. "I'm scared."
"You've said that since yesterday." Sara said.
"And it's only grown worse!" Ginny said.
"Don't worry!" Jan said. "They're four, reasonably intelligent, compassionate men."
"You don't have to tell us. Tell them!" Sara said. As if on cue, Peter Tork came walking up behind them.
"Good morning!" he smiled.
The three girls jumped.
"What's the problem?" Peter asked.
"Well, we sort of have something to tell you," Ginny stammered.
"What's that?" Peter asked again.
Jan stood there, on the verge of tears. She was terrified of all the things Peter might say to them. She would've given every last dime she had to have the sweet innocent Peter from the TV show there at this moment. Sara took a deep breath and stepped up in front of the other two girls, ready to spill the beans.
"Mr. Tork, you are not the only host of this convention. When I wrote and told you that the other three Monkees declined the offer to come, that wasn't exactly true. Micky was the only one who originally agreed to come. I'm sorry," Sara said as she hung her head.
"You mean...Micky's here?" he asked.
"Mike and Davy too!" Sara added.
"Mike?!" Peter exclaimed in obvious surprise. "Where are they?"
"They're not here yet. They were here yesterday." Ginny explained.
"That's why I was acting so strangely." Jan admitted. "We were trying to keep you four separate."
"I told you I didn't like having things kept from me!" Peter said firmly.
"Please, Mr. Tork, it wasn't her fault." Sara said. "Neither Jan nor Ginny knew about me sending letters to you, Mike and Davy."
"Why did you do it?!" Peter demanded.
"I..." Sara hung her head again. "...just wanted to see you four together again."
"Well, I think that was a very immature thing to do. Didn't you think we would all be upset by this? When I declined the first time, I had a chance to take Shoe Suede Blues out on the road. I cancelled that to make this convention. Here you had a host all along!" Peter said, getting very upset. Sara started to cry.
"Please Mr. Tork. It's not all her fault. We had plenty of opportunity to tell you what was going on yesterday, but we didn't. I guess we chickened out and we realize it was wrong," Jan said as bravely as she could under the circumstances.
"Jan's right." Ginny also added. "We're sorry."
"I don't care who's fault it was!" Peter exclaimed, then took a deep breath and calmed down. "I'm glad I didn't bother to unpack yet."
"You're not leaving?!" Ginny said.
"What do you expect me to do?" Peter asked.
"Work with Micky!" Ginny replied as if it were the simplest plan in the world.
"Oh you think you've got me fooled? Cry your eyes out, say you're sorry and still get your way, is that it?" Peter asked.
"No, I didn't mean that at all." Ginny said. "I just...I..."
"It's just that it seems such a waste for you to come out here and not even play." Jan finished for Ginny.
"You're right! It was a waste of my time, and your money." Peter said. "I still expect to be paid the full amount promised me in the letter. I think that should be enough to cover my troubles."
"Pay?!" Jan, Ginny and Sara had exclaimed at the same time. Neither of them thought about the fact that they would have to pay all four Monkees equally if they played....or as it was turning out, even if they didn't play.
"Send the money to my manager, or I'll contact my lawyer." Peter said.
Just as he turned to leave, Micky came through the front door. Both paused and looked at each other for the longest time.
"What are you doing here?" Micky asked. "I thought you declined the invitation to come."
"Oh ask these ladies." Peter said, waving his hand toward the three women. "They can explain a lot better than I can."
Peter stood there and waited for one of them to start explaining.
"Well?" Micky asked impatiently.
"Micky, it's my fault. After you had accepted the invitation I had this scheme to get all four of you together, so I wrote Peter, and Davy, and Mike, telling them that no one was coming and would they please reconsider," Sara said.
"Sara! Why did you do that? That was so totally dumb! One host not enough for you or something?" Micky asked."Well... I ..." Sara started.
"Peter is a busy man. He wouldn't decline without good reason. Do you think it was fair to waste his time or mine?" Micky asked again. Jan and Ginny stood in the background and sobbed as they hugged each other. They both knew they should jump in and say something. After all, it had been their idea to keep the four men hidden until later on.
"Micky, uh Mr. Dolenz, we are extremely sorry for any inconvenience," Ginny said sincerely.
"However, you did agree to play for us, and not on a moments notice either, uh sir," Jan said sheepishly.
"And I will play since that was a part of our agreement." Micky said. "However Peter here has been the one who was thoroughly deceived, and I think he should be compensated for his time."
"We've...we've already discussed that." Ginny stuttered.
"Oh, they're not done with you yet." Peter smiled and slapped Micky on the arm. "There's more."
"I suppose you're going to tell me that Davy and...and..." Micky's face became serious as he realized the possibilities. "...Mike are here too.""Well...." Ginny hesited.
"Davy's here!" Davy said as he walked up to the group. "I don't know about Mike."
"Uh...Mr. Jones....uh...we...we have something to tell you." Sara said.
"Don't bother repeating yourselves. I was standing back there when you explained it all to Micky." Davy replied with an angry scowl.
"Oh no Jan, here it comes," Ginny said as she feared the worst.
"What were you girls thinking? Did you think everything would be hunky dory and work itself out like a sitcom? This isn't television you know. It's real life and you are dealing with real peoples' feelings here. I hope you enjoyed your little joke because it's going to cost you big time!" Davy said almost shouting.
"Please, please Mr. Jones. It was my mistake. All my stupid mistake. Ginny and Jan got caught in the middle that is all. We all love you very much. It was never our intention to hurt anybody. I thought it would be a nice surprise for the fans to see all of you together this close to your fortieth anniversary," Sara begged him."Too little, too late," Davy said.
Suddenly, Jan noticed Mike getting ready to come through the door.
"Gee, I wish I were dead," Jan muttered to Ginny.
"To be honest, me too," she replied.
