Peter and Jan were just finishing up their sodas in the basement when Jan asked Peter another question.
"Peter, if you don't mind me asking, why don't you make up with the guys if you don't actually hate them?" Jan inquired.
"Well, it's been done before. It doesn't do much good. We always go back to our old ways, me included. I have a bad habit of nit-picking every little note. When you've gotten training in several areas of music, you do tend to become a perfectionist. I don't know, it's a nice thought though. I'm sure the fans get sick of us making up and breaking up again," Peter said as he shook his head.
Jan was about to comment on Peter's statement when they both suddenly heard music coming from up above. Peter listened intently while Jan felt a lump go to her throat. She hoped Peter didn't recognize the playing, but that was a long shot with his ear for music.
"What a great sound! That band you hired has really got Mike's style down pat. I would swear that was him if I didn't know any better," Peter said in amazement.
Jan gulped hard and then stammered out, "Yeah, it's amazing, isn't it?" Jan suddenly heard singing too. "Oh no, we're sunk," she thought.
"Sounds like Mike too. Very impressive. I'd like to go meet this guy who's singing," Peter said as he headed for the door.
"No, you can't!" Jan screamed as she blocked the doorway.
"Why not?" Peter asked.
"The band doesn't like to be bothered during practice," Jan said.
The lying was really getting to her. She was just seconds from cracking, but she wanted to discuss the issue with Ginny and Sara first. Suddenly the music stopped, and Jan let out a sigh of relief when Peter wasn't looking.
"Jan, if you don't mind, I think I will go back to my hotel now. Thanks for showing me around. I'll see you in the morning," Peter said."Wait, I'll go up with you, you know, to help you get your stuff together," Jan said as she ran up the stairs ahead of Peter. Peter just shook his head. He couldn't figure out what was the matter with this girl.
Jan ran down the hall before Peter could catch up with her. She quickly looked in the auditorium to see if Mike was still there. Luckily, he wasn't. She checked all the rooms nearby and he wasn't in them. She quickly gathered together Peter's duffel bag, guitar, and sheet music and placed it all by the door. Peter finally caught up with her.
"Why did you run like that? Was there a fire?" Peter asked.
"No, I just wanted to get all your things together for you. Well, you had better go. Tomorrow is another big day," Jan said, trying to rush him along.
"Well ok, good bye," Peter said as he headed out to his automobile.
Just as he left, Sara pulled in. Jan greeted her at the door.
"Hey Sara, where's George?" Jan asked.
"I dropped him off at his hotel," Sara said. Just then Ginny entered the lobby with Mike."Well Mike, I hope you get a good night's sleep. We'll see you tomorrow. Sorry for the interrogation," Ginny told him.
"That's ok. I shouldn't have been so sensitive. You're not asking anything that hasn't been asked of me a hundred times before," Mike said.
"Good night Mr. Nesmith," Jan said. Sara looked at her in surprise and mouthed the word "Mike".
"Good night Jan, miss," he said to Jan and Sara.
"Oh yeah, this is Sara Martin, the other coordinator," Ginny said.
"Oh yeah, you must've been the one that sent me that letter. It's nice to finally meet you in person," Mike said. "Well, I hate to rush off, but I've got some business calls to make and some music to work on. See you in the morning."
As soon as Mike left, Ginny and Jan gave Sara the most evil stares that could be given.
"Sara!" Was all that came out of Jan's mouth.
"Sara, how could you? Look at the mess we are in now," Ginny said, almost in tears.
"I'm sorry, I guess I didn't think about all this happening. All I knew is that I wanted all of the Monkees here for this, so I sent Davy, Mike, and Peter letters saying that no one else had accepted the offer to come, even after Micky agreed to do it," Sara apologized for her mistake.
"This can't keep up. Do you know how rudely we've treated these guys by deceiving them?" Ginny said.
"I say we end the charade tomorrow, no matter how mad they get at us. I'm truly exhausted from trying to hide Peter all afternoon from Micky, Davy, and Mike. He's too inquisitive! He want's to check out everything. I'm sure he was one of those that could never be surprised when he was younger," Jan said.
"Well, he'll be surprised tomorrow, that is if he doesn't kill you first," Ginny said.
"That's not funny," Jan said.
"I wasn't being funny. Davy's going to kill me. I wouldn't be surprised if they all think you and I had this planned," Ginny said.
"I'll take total responsibility for it all. It was a dumb thing to do. I should have left well enough alone with Micky's acceptance. One Monkee is better than none, which I'm afraid that's what we'll end up with before it's all said and done," Sara said with regret."Come on, I'm tired. Let's go back to the hotel and get this worked out. Hopefully, things won't be as bad as we're figuring," Ginny said, trying desperately to believe it herself.
Later at the hotel, Jan paced the room while Ginny sat on one bed and Sara stretched out on her stomach on the other bed.
"We're just going to have to tell them tomorrow. That's all there is to it." Jan said.
"I think Sara should be the one to tell them since she got us into this mess!" Ginny said.
"I said I was sorry! What more do you want? Blood?!" Sara asked.
"Come to think of it..." Ginny teased.
"Girls!" Jan sighed. "This isn't solving our problem."
"I'm sorry!" Ginny said. "You're right. We'll have to tell them. They'll find out by the time of the concert anyway."
"Think they'll leave?" Sara asked with a pained expression. "Even worse, do you think they'll sue?"
"I don't think they have a legal right, do you, Jan?" Ginny asked.
"I really don't know." Jan said. "Let's just worry about one problem at a time."
