A week later
A week has passed and Gil got the directions to Sara’s apartment. He was actually suffering from sweaty palms, he was so nervous.
Then he reasoned, ‘this is not a date, Gil. There is no reason to be nervous.’ He knew in his heart that it was a date, but his mind didn’t want to recognize it as such. The age was just such a big factor. ‘I mean she’s only 18 for God’s sake.’
His thoughts were shaken by the fact that he made it to her apartment complex. He got out of the car and walked to the entrance.
He rang the bell and she answered, “Yes?”
“Hi Sara, it’s Grissom. Are you ready?”
“Yes I am. I’ll be down in a couple minutes.”
Sara reached the entrance. She was dressed in a red cotton shirt that revealed a bit of her cleavage. She wore black capri’s and black wedge heels with an open toe. Her finger and toenails were painted red, and her hair was pulled back in a black and red polka dot headband.
“Sara, you look wonderful!” Gil exclaimed. He then realized he said too much, but he couldn’t take it back. He wanted to forget the show, take her inside her apartment and make love to her. He realized that couldn’t happen so he shook the thought. Besides, Sara would be upset to miss the concert that she dreams of seeing.
“Thanks Griss!” Sara couldn’t believe he said that. She started to wonder if he did have feelings for her. She would have to find out later on, after the show.
They arrived at the concert 10 minutes later. There were a couple others in line, so they were glad that they left early.
“Griss, I’m so excited about this concert! It’s my dream come true.”
“I know, I’m glad that I could make this dream come true for you.” Gil smiled widely at Sara.
As more fans got in line, Sara turned around to see if she knew anyone. It was then that she saw her old friend Melody. She was standing two people behind her.
“Melody?”
“Sara? Omigosh!”
The two women hugged. They hadn’t seen each other in two years, and Melody hadn’t changed a bit. She was still the same blonde, curvaceous, green eyed, big-breasted girl that Sara knew from the Catholic home.
“Sara, you look the same as you did when we were together at the home. So what’s been going on?” Melody shifted her head towards Gil when she asked the question.
Sara caught on. “Do you remember when I started working at a detective agency at 15? This is the head of the agency, Dr. Gil Grissom. Griss, this is Melody, the girl I told you about the other day.”
“Nice to meet you Melody.” Gil extended his hand and she shook it. It’s a good thing that he prefers brunettes, because if he didn’t, he would think she was hot.
“Nice to meet you too, Gil. Sara, what’s that you call him?”
“Griss. It’s short for Grissom. He told me I could call him that, so I do. It’s informal.”
“That’s groovy. So you still into the Monkees I see?”
“Oh yeah. Griss got me the ticket, because I was gushing over them the other day and I had said that I couldn’t go to the show. Isn’t that so sweet of him?”
“Yeah, that’s the bee’s knees girlie! Gil, you are one far out guy.”
“Thanks. I try.”
They continued talking until it was time to go in, which was an hour before the show. They were able to run and maneuver fast enough to get to the 2nd row of tables. They were at the center table and the girls started talking about how they would push their way to the front so they could touch Micky.
“Melody, is Micky your favorite too?” Gil asked.
“Oh yeah! Gosharoonies, would I love to kiss him!”
“Girlie, you’ll have to wait until I’m done!” Sara exclaimed excitedly.
“I bet I can beat you to it!”
“I bet you can’t!”
Gil got worried that they would fight. “Girls, it really doesn’t matter who’s first you know.”
“Griss, don’t worry. Melody and I are just kidding around. We never cared about that. We never fought.”
“Oh, okay.”
“Griss, Melody and I are going to go to the powder room. Can you order us cokes?”
“Yeah sure.”
The girls went to the restroom and got a chance to talk while waiting to use the facilities.
“Sara, he’s dreamy.”
“I know, isn’t he? I’ve got a crush on him the size of Texas!”
“You should tell him how you feel. The way he looks at you I think he likes you too.”
“Really? I never really noticed him looking at me like that. I’ll have to pay attention this evening.”
“You should. Oh yeah girlie, at one point while we were in line and talking he was gazing into your eyes. He’s got it bad for you.”
“Oh that’s wonderful! I’m in love, Melody.”
“Go for it. When he takes you home, make sure you say something in the car.”
“I will.”
“If you’re lucky, you’ll get some.”
“I hope so. I mean, I’m not the type to be easy, but he makes my knees wobble and turn to jello!”
“You haven’t done the deed yet have you?”
“No. I want him to be my one and only, if you know what I mean.”
“When you get married, I want to be the maid of honor.”
“Of course! You are my best friend! I’m so glad we are back in touch.”
“Me too. We’ll have to get together and dish.”
“Yeah, that will be outtasite.”
“Uptight outtasite.”
They laughed and took their turns at the restroom. Melody quickly adjusted the straps to her spaghetti strap blue tank top that was rather revealing, and they went back to the table. Gil was waiting there with their two cokes. He had a beer and was slowly sipping it.
“Hey Griss, sorry we took so long, the lines were incredible!”
“Yeah really.” Melody added.
“It’s okay. The cokes just got here anyhow.”
The show started fifteen minutes later. The Monkees came out on the stage dressed in their trademark eight-button shirts with their trousers. Peter’s belt was sideways and he had two different colored socks on.
The girls in the discotheque started screaming all four names. Melody and Sara were screaming for Micky. The first song was their new song Pleasant Valley Sunday and the girls started dancing. Gil was sitting, trying his best to hear the music, but it was difficult with all the screaming around. He made a mental note to listen to her albums. It did quiet down in between songs, so that the girls could hear what they had to say. The guys were funny, so there was a lot of laughing.
Gil thought they were funny as well. “Sara, you were right, these guys are great! I can’t hear the music very well but they are funny.”
“I’m glad that you like them. I told you they were great!” Sara smiled.
Halfway through the set, the girls were able to push their way up front. They got to quickly touch Micky’s hand and they both were ready to faint, but Gil made sure he had the smelling salts handy.
“Omigosh Melody, I can’t believe we touched his hand!”
“I know! I am not going to wash it ever again!”
“Me either!”
The set was over and it was two hours that both of the girls would never forget.
“Wow, that was so groovy.” Sara happily stated.
“It sure was. Sara, they are playing at the Troubadour next week. Do you want to go?”
“I’d love to! Thanks Melody!”
“Hey, what are friends for.”
“Ladies, I have a surprise for you.” Since Melody was here and was Sara’s best friend he would let her in on it too.
“You do?” They both asked in unison.
“Yes. How would you like to meet them?”
The two girls yelped. “How did you do that?” Sara asked shocked.
“I pulled some strings. We need to get backstage.”
They went to the manager of the club and he got them to go backstage. Micky, Davy, Peter and Mike were there, sitting and drinking cokes.
“Boys, there are a couple girls and a guy to see you. This is Sara Sidle, Melody Mulcahy, and Dr. Gil Grissom.”
“Hello!”
The girls couldn’t even get a hello out; they were so flabbergasted that they actually got there.
“Hi. It’s nice to meet you all and I’m sure the girls feel the same way.”
The girls were able to nod their heads.
“So you are a doctor? What hospital do you work for?” Micky asked.
“I am a scientist. I have a private eye agency in L.A.”
“Cool, a scientist! I love science!” Micky proudly exclaimed.
“That’s great. I am a Forensics Scientist, I solve criminal cases.”
“Groovy! Do you have a booming business?” Micky asked. “Yeah, but it’s been dead for a few days. I have a case I’m working on now but it’s not criminal this time.”
They all talked for a while, even the girls, and then Mike asked if they wanted to go grab some food with them. The girls were beside themselves; they couldn’t believe this was happening.
They went to the local malt shop and had some burgers, fries and cokes. They all were engaged in fascinating conversation and all agreed that they would keep in touch. Micky was rather smitten with Melody.
“Melody, can I see you alone for a sec?” Micky asked.
Melody was ready to turn to jello. “Sure.” She looked back at Sara, wondering what was going to happen.
“Melody, I have something I’d like to ask you.”
“Okay...”
“Would you like to come over to the beach house tomorrow? We can chill out on the beach.”
“Yes, that would be fantabulous!” Melody couldn’t believe that Micky Dolenz asked her out.
“Great! I’ll meet you at noon, since I sleep in. Do you know where I live?”
“Okay. Yes, I went to a beach show of yours.”
“See you tomorrow at noon.” Micky then placed a kiss on Melody’s cheek.
“Wow” Was all she could say.
“There’s more where that came from. Can I take you home?”
“Sure. Let me tell Sara and Gil.”
They both went into the malt shop and told everyone that Micky was taking her home. Davy winked, and Mike hit him on the arm.
“Hold up shotgun. You know we have practice at 3:00 tomorrow so you better be home soon.”
“Yes father. Mike’s our father figure.” Micky pointed over at Mike who was not amused.
“Very funny Mick. Just be home by three.”
“I will.”
“Griss, we need to get going. We have to be at the office early to start working on the case.”
“You’re right. We’ll see you guys this weekend, okay?”
“Yeah. Come on over after noon, because Micky doesn’t get up until eleven. We’ll have a cook out and hang out on the beach all afternoon, Davy doesn’t usually have a date until evening.” Mike stated.
“Okay great, we’ll see you then.”
Sara and Gil walked out of the malt shop and got into his ’65 Mustang.
“Griss, I had a marvy evening. Thanks for everything. I still can’t believe this is happening! We are now friends with The Monkees!”
“You’re welcome and yeah it’s fab, as you so often say. I dig Micky; he’s cool. Him and I seem to have a lot in common.”
“Yeah you sure do. No wonder I like you.” Sara covered her mouth; that’s not how she wanted to let him know.
“You like me? Oh Sara. You know this can never work out.”
“Why can’t it? Don’t you like me?”
“That’s not relevant. What’s relevant is you are 15 years younger than me and it’s just not ethical.”
“Not ethical? Give me a break Grissom. I’m peeved, Griss! So what if we are 15 years apart? Age is nothing. My brother is 12 years older than me. I hung around with all his friends while we were together.
“I’m sure they found you annoying too.”
“Why, do you find me annoying?”
“No of course not. I find you very interesting and intelligent. I consider you my friend.”
“Is that all you consider me? I sincerely doubt it.”
“Sara, that’s not important.”
“It is too.”
“Sara...”
“Griss, just tell me, do you have feelings for me?”
“I am not going to answer that.”
“I knew it! You do have feelings for me! But because of our age difference you won’t act on it! You are unbelievable.”
“Sara, honey...”
“Don’t call me honey if you don’t mean it!”
“Look, let’s just drop the subject for now.”
“No! I will not drop the subject! Griss, why are you doing this to me?”
“Doing what?”
“Are you dense? You are leading me on. We’re here. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Sara went to get out of Gil’s car and he stopped her.
“Sara, don’t be angry with me.” Gil hates it when she gets angry, and he sure doesn’t like the fact that she’s angry with him.
“UGH, Griss you really take the cake! Good night, I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Fine. Good night Sara.”
Sara slammed the door and Gil waited until she got into her building. ‘How am I going to handle this? Her being angry with me isn’t going to help matters any.’ He thought to himself.
He drove home to his townhouse and went to bed.
