Mike had informed Mr. Finley, the manager of the Vincent Van Go-Go, that the band had taken a break because Peter was "suddenly called home on family business." That was the only excuse he could think of. Mr. Finley seemed to understand. After all Peter always made him laugh, but he had to admit the boy was a heavy thinker. Even when the boys told Mr. Babbit, their landlord, he expressed that all would be OK and that Peter would return home soon.
One afternoon as the boys sat around the Pad...
"Mike, I miss Peter. I really miss em." Davy said sadly.
"Yeah, me too. And to think that I was just acquiring a taste for root beer soup." Micky added. (Mike and Davy stare at Micky) "What?"
"Guys I guess we really hurt his feelings for him to leave us. I thought he'd just go to a friend's house ta cool off." Mike said.
"Pete's got friends?" Micky asked, surprised. "Wonder why he never brought any of them around?"
"Micky, can ya get serious for a minute? Peter may never come back." Davy said, almost crying.
"I was only tryin' to lighten the mood. I know it's not the same around here without big Pete. It reminds me of the time your grandfather came to take you back to England. It made me sad at the point of not seeing you again, Davy." Micky said, suddenly in a more serious tone.
"Well, it's been nearly a week now an' I'm thinkin' 'bout calling Peter's home." Mike stated firmly.
"Mike, you think 'es gone home? You know 'ow 'is father is 'bout music!" Davy said, alarmed.
"That's right, man. If you think we were mean to Peter, wait till his father starts in on him." Micky added.
"That's the only place he'd go guys. Face it, Peter has left California an' if we want him back, we're gonna have ta go ta Connecticut ta git him." Mike said decidedly.
Mike got up and walked to the phone. Just as he placed his hand on the receiver, it rang.
