Mike: Hmmm?I wonder where they went to? (Mike walked into the studio and turned on the light switch. He found the other three Monkees fast asleep and got a sheepish, devilish grin on his face. Mike put his one finger to his mouth as if to say "Shhh" to his two sisters. He went to the sound system, turned the volume up and turned it on to where it woke the three sleeping Monkees up. Micky jumped up, Davy put his hand to his heart and Peter screamed out and held his hands over his ears. Mike was laughing as were his sisters so he turned the thing back off; still laughing) Hah, hah, hah?you should have seen the look on your faces just now. It would have been a kodak moment. (Mike kept laughing)
Davy (Hand still over his heart): That wasn't funny Michael!
Micky: Yeah, man, what are ya trying to do; give us a heart attack?
Mike (Still laughing): Hah, hah, hah?I couldn't resist it! (Mike had to sit down he was laughing so hard)
Peter: Yeah, well?well we just didn't think it was funny okay?
Mike (Controlling himself): Awe c'mon guys! You can't tell me you didn't think it was funny. (They just looked at him with their arms crossed) Oh all right. I'm sorry. I won't do anything like that again.
Peter (Realizing Mike had just laughed): Wait a minute here! (Peter looked at Mike a little closer) I don't believe it!
Mike: Believe what?
Peter: Micky do you see what *I* see? (Micky came up to Mike and circled him)
Micky: Well I'll be?hey Dave, you gotta come check *this* out! (Davy came over to Mike and saw what they did)
Davy (Hand to his heart): Oh that did it! Oh, I don't believe it! Mike Nesmith knows how to smile *and laugh* all at the same time. (The girls just giggled in the background as they watched the Monkees be silly toward their brother)
Mike: All right will you all just cool it?
Davy (Laughing and seeing the two girls): Well, who do we have here?
Mike: Guys, you've met my sister Danielle but you haven't met my other sister. This is Lynn.
Lynn (Eyes wide as she looked at Davy with excitement): I don't believe it! I can't believe it's you!
Davy (Kissing Lynn's hand): It is a pleasure to meet you my dear. (He stood back and looked at her) You sure you're related to this man?
Lynn (Embarrassed face turning a bit red): Well, yeah. That's what I've been told.
Davy: Mike, there's no way she's related to you.
Mike: Why do you say that?
Davy: `Cuz she's much better looking. (They laughed)
Micky: It's nice to meet you, Lynn. I'm Micky Dolenz. (Lynn smiled even more embarrassed than before because Micky gave her a kiss on the cheek)
Lynn: This is just unbelievable. You guys are my all-time favorite band and then to find out I'm related to the cute, tall Texan (Mike rolled his eyes)?and then to finally meet my all-time favorite Monkee? I'm just?I'm?
Danielle (Picking on her sister): She's speechless. (They laughed a little)
Peter: Well, now that you guys are here, do you think that maybe, just maybe, you could talk your big brother into concentrating on practicing for our concert tour?
Danielle (Smiling): Sure. (To Mike) Knock'm dead big brother! (Mike picked up his guitar and began tuning it)
Peter: You ready?
Mike: I am. You three ready?
Davy: Mike, we were ready two hours ago. (They laughed some more and then the Monkees performed a practice in front of the two ladies)
Mike (Putting down his guitar): So what do you think ladies?
Lynn: You're asking us for your opinion? (He nodded) Um, I loved it. You were great.
Danielle: Definitely a great show. But it's missing something.
Micky: What?
Danielle: I don't know?it's just missing something.
Davy: What *kind* of something?
Peter: Well what we're missing we'll never find. (They looked at Peter) Our minds..? Get it..?
Mike: You are crazy, you know that dontcha Pete? You're plain crazy.
Peter (Smiling with his dimple): Heh, I know.
Lynn: I know what's missing; if you want to hear it from me that is.
Mike: `Course we do sis.
Lynn: Your hat.
Mike: My what..?
Lynn: Your green wool that you used to wear all the time on the show.
Mike: But I don't have that thing anymore. I gave it away to some fan a couple years ago during one of my solo concerts.
Lynn (Same devlish grin her brother had): I know that.
Mike: You do..? (Lynn pulled something out of her purse and they couldn't believe what it was; taking it from her) My hat! But?
Lynn: I went to your solo concert when you threw it into the audience. I don't know if it was luck or if it was meant to be but I caught it and have kept it in my closet ever since. When I went to get everyone something to drink, I snuck to my bedroom to get it. I was going to give it to you then but I was too chicken.
Danielle: Well what are you waiting for brother? Try it on! (Mike looked at the three Monkees and they nodded to him. He put it on his head and they smiled at him)
Peter: Hey, it's the old Mike. When did *you* get here? (They laughed and Mike jokingly hit Peter)
Mike: Now that we're finished, I'm heading home. Hey Pete? Can you give my sisters a ride back home?
Peter: Sure no problem.
Mike (To his sisters): If he doesn't treat ya like a gentleman, tell him Big Mike will come get him.
Danielle (Laughing): You are something else Mike. (She hugged him) See you later okay?
Mike: Yeah.
Lynn (Hugging Mike): Thank you for bringing me here to mee them.
Mike: I was happy to do so. You two take care of your mom okay? She's going to need some looking after for a couple of days. Tell her to call me about the funeral arrangements for dad and tell her I'll help ya'all in any way I can.
Danielle: We will. You just go home and get some sleep. You're going to need it with two new little ones around. (He smiled and then he left)
Micky: Well, now, how do ya like that! He didn't even say good-bye to us.
Davy: Mick, when will ya ever learn. Mike only says good-bye to us when we are finished with our tours. (They laughed) C'mon, we must get these ladies home.
Peter: Hey wait a minute! Mike told *me* to take them home.
Micky: So?
Peter: So, I do what I'm told to.
Micky: Okay?go get in your car and go home Pete. (Peter went to his car without the ladies and they just laughed at him)
Danielle: He's cute.
Davy: Yeah; cute and gullable. C'mon, we'll get you ladies home. (They left the studio with the ladies)
(Mike went home to an empty house. Since his kids were staying with his ex-wife, his butler had the night off and his maid wouldn't be in until morning, Mike decided to go to the kitchen to find something to eat. He found his dinner he hadn't touched and decided to pop it in the microwave. When it was done, he sat down to try and eat it but his thoughts began to wonder again. He put his food in the refrigerator again and decided to just take a shower and go to bed. Being that Mike was exhausted, sleep was no longer a problem. He fell right to sleep)
(Two days went by and Mike brought Katie and the two new babies home? Clairice and Janelle were right behind them with the two babies in their hands?)
Mike: Close your eyes Katie.
Katie: Mike?
Mike: Close them! (Katie closed her eyes) Keep'm closed.
Katie: Mike I can't see anything.
Mike: That's the purpose of having you close'm. (He guided her through the house and didn't let her open them until he was in a room full of baby things) Okay, you can open them. (Katie opened her eyes to see a room fully decorated with two white cribs, wall-paper with bunnies on them, a toy box with new toys and a couple of new teddy bears sitting in each crib) What do you think?
Katie (Smiling): Wow! Did you do this all yourself?
Mike: Well, I *did* have a little help. (Yelling) YOU CAN COME OUT NOW!! (Mike's mother, step-mother and two new sisters came from their hiding spots) These four helped decorate the whole thing.
Clairice: Don't forget about Jan and me.
Mike: Oh yeah; Jan and Clairice helped buy the toys for them.
Katie: Wow! It's beautiful! Thank you guys so much! (Katie hugged them all)
Mike: And since these two tykes are sleeping, let's put them in their new cribs and get *you* into bed yourself.
Katie: I don't wanna go to bed. I've been in bed for two days now. I just wanna be with the babies.
Rosalee: Honey, ya really need your rest. The babies will be well tended to. Dr. Miller said you'd heal faster if you rested in bed.
Katie: Can't I rest in the living room?
Mike (Sighing): Oh I guess so. C'mon! (To Clairice and Janelle) Gently put them in their cribs and then leave the room so they won't wake up.
Janelle: Awe, can't we hold them a little longer dad?
Mike: No. They need to get used to their cribs.
Janelle (Disappointed sigh): Yes sir. (Janelle put the one she had in one crib and helped her sister put the other baby in the other crib)
Mike (Whispering): C'mon! (They followed their dad out to the living room)
Janelle: Hey Lynn? Wanna go swimming?
Lynn: Yeah that'd be great! Except?I don't have a swim suit.
Janelle: Hmmm?you look about my size. I think I have one that will fit you. C'mon! (The girls took off for Janelle's room)
Elizabeth: I know this must be odd for you, Rosalee.
Rosalee: Not really, Liz. I had ta accept the way Bob was and that's all there is to it.
Elizabeth: Are you upset that ya never got ta see him again?
Rosalee: No. I talked ta him on the telephone and we said our sorries that way. I, like my son here, couldn't really face him again.
Mike: When's his funeral?
Elizabeth: Tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m.. I know ya didn't really know him, Mike but?would you do me a favor?
Mike: I don't know Liz. Mike Nesmith doesn't like doing favors for anyone.
Danielle: Not even for me? (Mike looked at his sister and then at Elizabeth)
Mike (Sighing): Oh all right. What's the favor?
Elizabeth: Would you sing for his funeral tomorrow? (Mike didn't answer her) Mike please? It would mean so much to him. (Mike still didn't say anything) Mike?
Mike: Yeah I guess.
Elizabeth: You will..? (He nodded and Elizabeth hugged him) Thank you.
Mike: You're welcome. C'mon, let's go join the girls in swimming.
Rosalee: Sounds good to me. (They went to the pool swimming and covered a, now, sleeping Katie up. Mike looked at her, kissed her and walked away)
(Later on that night, Mike tucked his daughters and new babies into their beds and then took his wife to their room. He helped her get comfortable and kissed her?)
Mike: I love you, Kathleen Nesmith.
Katie (Smiling): And I love you Michael Nesmith. (She looked at hiim and saw a worried look on his face) What's on your mind babe?
Mike (Sitting down beside her on the bed): I'm just unsure of things, y'know? I wanna be happy that I have a new family but I?I'm scared.
Katie: Scared of what? (Mike didn't answer her) Honey, whatever happened in your past is just that?in the past. You may not have had a great life with your father but you were able to forgive him before he died. Let it go and start over. Be their big brother and that woman's son. (He smiled at her) C'mon! Come to bed and I'll help make you feel better.
Mike: I can't come to bed just yet. I have something I need to do. If you need me, ring my studio.
Katie: Mike?(Mike left his room without saying anything else because he had an idea that he needed to get down on paper right away. He ran to his studio where he sat the whole night writing a song for his dad)
(The next morning, his son came over dressed in a black and white suit looking for his dad?)
Andrew: DAD..?? (No answer) ANYONE HOME..?? (No answer so he went looking for them; knocking on the bedroom door) Dad..?
Katie's Voice: Andy is that you..?
Andrew: Yeah! Can I come in?
Katie's Voice: One minute! (There was a few second pause) C'mon in!
(Andrew came in and smiled at his step-mother and one of the babies?)
Andrew: Where's dad?
Katie: I don't know. Jan brought me Robbie sometime this morning and he wasn't in here.
Andrew: Any idea where he might be in this place? It's going on 9:30 and we're supposed to be over to the church by 10:00.
Katie: Check the swimming pool, the basketball court or the recording studio.
Andrew: Right. I'll be back in a few minutes to help you up.
Katie: No, that's okay. That's what your sisters are for. (He laughed and left the room)
(Andrew searched all three places and found his father asleep on the bed in the studio?)
Andrew: Dad..? (Mike turned over as if he were still wanting to sleep and pretending he didn't hear his son) Dad, time to wake up! (Mike groaned)
Mike: Go away!
Andrew: Dad, you *have* to get up. It's 9:30 and you said you wanted to be at the church by 10:00.
Mike (Sitting up and now grumpy): I don't *wanna* go to the church!
Andrew: You have to go to the church. You promised Grandma Nez and your new family you'd be there.
Mike: Oh all right. (Mike got out of the bed and Andrew was surprised to see him still in the same clothes as the night before)
Andrew: You starting a fashion trend for night-time sleeping or something? (Mike looked at himself)
Mike: Very funny. I came in here to write a song for my father's funeral today. It took me until 3:00 this morning to finish writing it and then it took until 4:00 to get the music recorded. Not to mention it took another half an hour just to get my voice right with the song.
Andrew: So why aren't you happy about it?
Mike: Because I still have a lot going on in my mind about the whole thing.
Andrew: Stop worrying about it and get ready to go. I'm going to go make sure the girls help Kate get ready.
Mike: Okay. Make sure those babies are dressed warm enough.
Andrew: I will. (Andrew left and Mike gathered up his stuff. Once he had all his stuff there, he walked through the house with actual tears rolling down his face. He went to the bathroom for his shower and while in the shower, he thought about everything and tried to remember some good things about his dad. The only problem was, Mike couldn't think of any good things about him. He got out of the shower and put his best suit on. Just as he was finishing up, his wife came in the bathroom to help him out)
Katie: Mike, you okay?
Mike (Fussing with his tie): I'm trying to get the nerve up to go to the funeral.
Katie (Taking a hold of his tie): Take a deep breath and relax. (He did what she said) You'll do fine; I know you will. (Katie tied Mike's tie) There you go.
Mike (Taking a hold of his wife): I love you.
Katie (Smiling): I know.
Mike (Still messing with his suit): You look beautiful this morning.
Katie: Liar.
Mike: I mean it, babe. You really look great. Do you feel well enough to go to the funeral?
Katie: I feel fine. You don't have to worry about me.
Mike: Ah but I do, my dear. You are my world and I need to worry about you. It's my job. (They laughed)
Katie: C'mon. You're gonna be late.
Mike: You really think I'll do okay?
Katie (Kissing him): I know you will. Let's go! (Mike helped Katie out to the living area where the girls and Andrew?along with the two babies?were sitting on the sofa waiting for their parents)
Andrew: Kate, I took the liberty of asking my mother to get you a wheel chair when we get there.
Katie: Thanks, Andy. We ready? (They nodded and left the house)
(Mike and his family arrived at the church and Mike tried not to cry. He looked around and saw his band mates up front so he went up to them. He whispered in their ears and the next thing Katie knew, her husband had disappeared?)
Katie: Andy? Follow him!
Andy: Right! (Andy followed his dad and the three Monkees to another spot in the church. When he saw them grabbing instruments, he knew what his dad was up to so he returned to his step-mother) He's fine.
Katie: You sure? (Andy nodded)
(The funeral for Mike's father began. When it was his turn to get up there, he froze?)
Elizabeth: Mike..? (Mike shook his head `no' but his wife made him get up from his seat) Everyone, this is my step-son Michael Nesmith. You may all know him as one of The Monkees but I know him as Bob's son. (Mike smiled) Mike did not have a very good past with his father and because of that it took a while for them to patch things up. But he finally did and because of that, I have asked him to come and say a few words and sing for us. So I'm going to turn it over to him. (Mike got up to the stage and looked out at everyone)
Mike (Clearing his throat): Um?I'm not really good at speaking in front of a crowd of people so bear with me. (Mike took a minute to gather his thoughts up) I don't know what to say really so I'm going to sing for you instead since singing and writing are my ways of getting my feelings out. I've asked my best friends to come and help me out with this song I wrote last night. It's called, "A Past To Be Forgiven" (Micky, Peter and Davy came to the stage and stood beside Mike. Mike tuned his guitar and began to sing. The other three Monkees sang along with him filling in the background and harmonizing with Mike. When the song was finished, there were claps and he felt much better about his father's passing)
(After they took Bob's caskett to the cemetary, they had Mike come up to the platform to receive the flag. When he got back down to his friends and family, he couldn't hold it in any longer. Mike began to cry as his father was laid to rest?getting comforted by friends and family. While Mike still had some healing to do, he knew at this point things were going to get a little easier now that he had forgiven his dad)
There is a lesson to be learned from this story. If you have someone in your past that you need to forgive, please do so before it's too late. If someone has done you wrong, even though it may be hard, forgiving them may make you feel better and help you begin a healing process you won't regret. Thanks for being patient in waiting for theending. Hope you liked it and hope the ending wasn't too dull for ya.
