Chapter 2

Mike and Andy sat down in a booth and waited for the girl to show up.)

Andy: What would she have to say to you? (The waitress handed them the menus) Thank you.

Mike (To the waitress): Thank you.

Waitress: Tonight's special is the prime rib that comes with your choice of potato and two other sides. I'll be back in a moment to take your orders.

Mike: Thanks. (The waitress leaves) To answer your question, I don't know what she'd have to say. I've never met her before.

Andy: You told me you used to `fool around' behind mom's back before; henceforth why you are no longer married to her. You don't think this girl could be one of them with a surprise do ya?

Mike: I hope not. That'd be the last thing I'd need.

Waitress: What can I get ya?

Mike: I'll have your special with mashed potatoes, no gravy and a side salad with ranch dressing.

Waitress: And to drink?

Mike: Milk.

Andy (Looking at him strangely): Milk..?

Mike: I have a feeling I'm going to need it before we leave here.

Andy: I'll have the same as my dad but can you get me a beer to go with it?

Waitress: Sure thing. (The waitress looked at Mike and studied him over. She, suddenly, realized who he was) You're?you're Mike Nesmith of?of The Monkees!

Mike: Uh?that's your imagination!

Waitress: I don't think so! Could I have your autograph?

Mike: Oh?all right! Just don't let on I'm here okay? (Mike signed the paper)

Waitress: Thanks! And I promise I won't say a word to anyone! (The waitress disappeared)

Andy: That was a close call, dad.

Mike: I know; but I'm afraid she won't keep quiet about me being here. You know how much I hate public meetings. That's why when Davy, Micky, Peter and myself get together, we order the food to be delivered.

Andy: So if you don't know this girl we're meeting, then how will you know it's her?

Mike: I have a feeling she'll know who I am first. (Their drinks were delivered to them) I didn't order a beer.

Waitress: It's compliments of that girl right there. (The waitress pointed to a girl over in the corner)

Andy: You think it's her dad?

Mike: Could be. (Mike made eye contact with the girl. Once the girl knew Mike had his drink, she got up and walked over to him)

Girl: Is this seat taken? (Andy looked at the girl. She had semi- long dark hair, brown eyes and had a small resemblance to his dad)

Mike: Danielle?

Danielle: Yes. May I have a seat?

Mike: Sure! (Danielle sat down) This is my son, Andrew. We call him Andy.

Danielle: Nice to meet you.

Mike: So what's so important that you had to meet with me in a public place?

Danielle: Do you remember your dad?

Mike: I remember an image of him that I'd rather forget. Why?

Danielle: What was he like?

Mike: That was a long time ago. What are you; a reporter or something?

Danielle: No. I'm just curious. What was your dad's name?

Mike: Same as mine but in reverse. My name is Robert Michael and his name was Michael Robert. He left my mom and I when I was 10 and I don't wanna talk anymore about him. (Mike's food came; to the waitress) Could you put my food in a doggie bag? I'm not as hungry as I thought I was.

Waitress: Sure thing, Mr. Nesmith. (The waitress took the food back)

Mike: C'mon, Andy! (Mike stood up) I have a meeting with my former band mates in two hours.

Danielle: Mike wait! Please give me a minute to talk and if what I have to say doesn't interest you, then you can leave.

Mike (Disgusted sigh): Oh all right! (Mike sat back down and began to drink his beer)

Danielle: What do you remember about your dad?

Mike: That he was a pain in my mother's side and I mean that literally. He was a "police officer" and so he ran the home his way. If it wasn't run his way, then he got mad. And I am not going to go into details because just the thought of him sends shivers up my spine. He left when I was ten and I was glad to see him go. Why all these questions about my dad?

Danielle: Did you ever wonder where he went to or what he'd been doing all these years?

Mike: Not really. Once he left, my mother married a better man. That man raised me until he passed away last year and as far as I'm concerned my biological dad means nothing at all to me!

Danielle: What if I told you that he isn't too far away from you?

Mike (Eyes now looking directly at hers): What?

Danielle: What if I told you he's here in L.A.? Would you go see him?

Mike (Hesitating): I dunno; maybe. How do you know who he is anyway?

Danielle: I'm his daughter. (Mike looked at her in disbelief) That's right, Michael. I'm your sister. My name is Danielle Virginia Nesmith. I'm 27 years old and my father is your father.

Mike: Sister? (Mike had to stop and think before he said anything. Even his son was sitting in disbelief over the news)

Danielle: A little hard to take, isn't it?

Mike: Um...I have to go! (Mike got up from his seat again. The waitress gave Mike his food)

Andy: Dad...(Mike quickly left the restaurant for his car. He got in and just sat there. He hated the thought of his dad and now he had a sister to go with that thought) I'm sorry, Danielle. (To the waitress) Could I have this to go too? (She nodded. Andy put the money on the table and then turned to a crying Danielle) I'll handle my dad. Here's his address. (Andy handed her a card) Just don't give it out. He'd kill me! (Andy put his jacket on and left the restaurant. Danielle just sat there in tears and didn't move for quite a bit)
