Chapter 15

Davy came out of his bedroom later that day. He was freshly shaved and showered and hummed softly while he finished combing his gleaming brown hair.

"Are you still hogging the bathroom, Davy? I happen to have a date tonight, too. Annie and I are going to The Colony Room." Micky tried to maneuver his way between Davy and the mirror. Normally Davy wouldn't budge and a shoving match would ensue, but tonight he was in such good spirits that he didn't want to wrinkle Micky's suit. He stepped aside and even offered his best aftershave to Micky!

"Peter! An alien has taken over Davy's body!" Micky acted horrified and ran from the bathroom.

Peter laughed at Micky, who was cowering behind the couch. Davy came into the living room and said in a monotone, "Take...me...to...your...leader." Then in his best Cockney accent he added, "No, on second thought, take me to your women!"

"You guys ought to take the show on the road. Like, you better get going." Mike came in from outside in time to hear the last bit of conversation.

"Micky, your tie is crooked. Wait! No, it's not. Your face is!" Davy yelled as he darted out the door, just before the pillow that Micky sent sailing after him.

"Pete. Peter! PETER TORK!" Peter was startled back to the present by a familiar voice calling his name. He looked towards the beach house and shaded his eyes. Mike was standing on the deck.

"Come here! Hurry!" Mike's tone was urgent.

Peter ran into the pad. Micky and Mike were sitting at the table with worried expressions on their faces. "Chip just called. Davy's on his way home. Chip found him in his barn and said Davy wasn't at all himself. Your intuition was right. Something happened last night, and it wasn't good." The three friends exchanged glances. "Davy wouldn't tell Chip anything. He was too upset."

Mike stood up and looked around helplessly. He felt like he wanted to punch something. He didn't talk about feelings often, especially his own, but that didn't mean he was insensitive; quite the contrary. His three fellow musicians were like the brothers he had never had and if one of them hurt, he took it as hard as if the pain were his own. He would be a formidable force against anyone who dared to mess with any one of them.

"I hope we can get him to talk to us." Micky said somberly. "I wonder if something happened to Cherrie."

Peter shook his head. "That isn't it. Davy would have let us know if that was the case. No, they must have had an argument or broken up. But what could have happened? He was so happy when he left last night." All the guys could do was wait until Davy got home.
