"I can't wait until tomorrow night. It seems like forever since I've been able to look into your captivating green eyes." Davy had only spoken to Cherrie once on the phone in the last few days and hadn't seen her at all. There was so much to do to get ready for the next recording session. There had been meetings, rehearsals, more meetings, publicity photo shoots, and still more meetings. Now he had a chance to quickly phone Cherrie and make a date to see the woman he had only dreamed of such a short time ago.
"I know. I miss your smile and how safe I feel when you hold me. Are you sure you can't break away today?" Cherrie wanted to be certain Davy wouldn't find out about her plans with Sky for that evening.
"I'm so sorry, luv. The suits from corporate are in today so it's nothing but another dull business dinner for me. You know I'd rather gaze at you across the table. You're much lovelier than Lester Sill."
Cherrie laughed and then said, "So it's tomorrow at eight. I'll be waiting for you. I love you."
"I love you too. `Bye." Davy hung up the phone and sighed. The worst part of recording was having to schmooze with the executives of the record company the band was signed to. Like it or not, it was essential to making sound financial deals that profited not only the company but also The Monkees. Davy left the office and went back to the studio where he had left the others sorting through demos they might be interested in listening to.
Mike looked up when Davy opened the door. "We've got great news for you. Lester got an urgent call, and he's got to fly to New York right away. You can go call Cherrie back and let her know you're free tonight after all."
Davy's mood immediately shifted from businesslike to joyous. "You aren't kidding, are you fellas?"
Peter shook his head. "No, it's the truth. Does this face look like it's kidding?" Peter pointed solemnly to Micky, who was twisting his face into one of his many silly, endearing expressions.
"Cool! Micky, I'm so happy I could almost kiss even you!" Davy threw his arms around Micky and clapped him on the back. Then for good measure, he hugged Peter and Mike too. "I'm not going to call her, though. I'm gonna surprise her!"
Peter said, "Are you sure you don't want to call her? What if she's made other plans?"
"I didn't think about that. Hmm, I guess I'm just going to take my chances. She mentioned that Karen was going to use the car tonight so I'm hoping she's planning on a quiet evening at home."
"Uh, Davy? I dig that you want to surprise her. Just remember I said you're free tonight. We've still got a lot of work to do before we can quit for the day."
"Oh, right Mike. I didn't mean to get so excited. Did you find anything worth listening to while I was out?" Davy settled back down to business but not without difficulty. He was going to see Cherrie tonight!
