Cherrie was lying across her bed talking to her cousin, Judy, on the phone. "I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw them sitting there. It's a good thing those two kids were up front to distract them. I thought for sure that they'd see me sitting there with Sky."
"Cherrie, I can't believe you went out with him around here. Have you lost your mind? I thought you were in love with Davy."
"Well, it isn't like we're married or anything. He's a nice guy and I do love him, but you know how I feel about being tied down. There are too many guys to meet and too much fun to have." Cherrie twirled the end of her hair absentmindedly as she talked.
"I don't know about this. Davy did say when we all met that he's not the love `em and leave `em type. I think he's really getting serious about the two of you having a future together." Judy was starting to get upset with her cousin. It bugged her that this girl, who was beautiful and had no shortage of dates, could be so nonchalant about love and what it might mean to her boyfriends.
"Judy, what's your problem? You've never given me any static before." Cherrie narrowed her eyes. "Oh, I get it now. You want Davy for yourself! You know he'll never give you a glance when he can have someone like me!"
"Cherrie, I've never had a problem before because the guys you went out with were just as shallow as you are. Davy's different. He may be in a band but he's not a one-night stand person. You know how much he loves his parents and how much he wants a relationship like they had. You yourself told me that! Doesn't any of this make any difference to you?" Judy was almost pleading with Cherrie. Cherrie had struck a nerve when she mentioned that Judy wanted Davy. She was right. Judy would have been thrilled if Davy had been interested in her instead of Cherrie. She wouldn't be careless with his feelings, and it made her heart ache to know that Cherrie had fooled him into thinking that she loved him.
Cherrie laughed, but there was no humor in it. "That's a good one. I'm shallow? Man, Judy. I didn't realize how naïve you are until just now. Do you honestly think that he'll be true to me and only me when he's out on the road? There's only one thing on a guy's mind, especially one that's a musician, and that's s-e-x. When Davy went to Phoenix, I'll bet he wasn't alone after the show. None of them were! Grow up, little girl. There's nothing different about Davy and there's nothing wrong with me seeing Sky, John, Paul, George, Ringo, and Davy at the same time if that's what I want to do!"
Judy didn't even bother to say good-bye. She hung up the phone and switched off the lamp next to her chair. She didn't go to bed, though. She sat there quietly in the dark, thinking.
