Micky, Peter, and Mike exited the movie theater. "I liked the book better," Micky said. "I always like the book better than the movie if I read it first. I don't know why I let you guys talk me into seeing this one."
"So you didn't enjoy this at all? You like sci-fi, Mick. You wanted to see it as much as we did." Mike was still a little put out that the girls couldn't join them this evening. Sitting in the darkened theater with Micky and Peter just wasn't the same as cuddling next to Patty! Listening to Micky complain was adding to his irritability.
"Let's head over to Big Boy's. I feel like having a milkshake. We can talk more about the movie there." Peter, ever the peacemaker, jumped into the jeep. "To the food establishment, Smithers."
Mike gave Peter a brotherly grin. He knew Peter was happiest when there was harmony between them. "Whatever you say, good buddy," he replied as he fit himself behind the steering wheel.
Micky climbed in behind Mike. "Yeah, that sounds good. I could go for a burger, fries, and a Coke."
"Where do you put it all, Micky? Dinner, popcorn, candy, and now you want more?" Mike put the jeep in gear and roared away.
At the restaurant a few minutes later, Micky was busy flirting with the tall, slim waitress who seemed impressed with his James Cagney impersonation. A couple of girls sat at the counter a few feet away, peering over their menus into the mirror, watching Micky's antics and twittering.
Peter noticed the girls and nudged Mike. Mike jabbed Micky's side with his elbow and nodded towards his audience. Micky grinned delightedly and rose to approach the young fans. When the teens realized they had been seen, they tried to hide behind their menus. Micky perched on the stool next to the pair and began to sing under his breath, "I'm gonna buy me a dog, `cause I need a friend now." At this, he turned and gave the kids the most pitiful, puppy-dog-eyes look he could muster. They couldn't hold their laughter any longer. The menus fell on the counter as the girls covered their mouths, shaking with merriment.
Micky brought the admirers to the table. "This is Peter and Mike. I'm Micky. Your names are...?"
The chubby girl with braces spoke up first. "My name is Lori. I can't believe you're here! Right here!"
Her friend with glasses and too much make-up for her age could barely work up a squeak. "I'm Sandy."
"Well, girls, we gotta eat too!" Mike tried to put the nervous fan at ease.
Lori snickered. "Could we have your autographs?"
Peter smiled at the teens. "Sure. Is a napkin okay?" He signed "Peace and Love, Peter Tork" after their names. Micky drew a funny face along with his signature, and Mike simply signed his name. The girls smiled and thanked the guys for their time. Then Sandy whispered something to Lori.
"Um, where's Davy?" asked Lori.
"He's busy this evening. Sorry you missed him. I'm sure he would have enjoyed meeting you," Micky answered.
"We love you! Please tell Davy too!" and with that, the pair was out the door in a burst of chattering.
The waitress came back for their order just then. The Monkees were too occupied to notice the tall, good-looking man and the striking girl with the long strawberry-blonde hair leaving the eatery through the door in the back. She stole a glance over her shoulder as she left, very glad that she hadn't been spotted.
