Chapter 9

It was a perfect starry evening. The waves were gently lapping the shore, the breeze was just a whisper, and the gorgeous couple was hand-in-hand as they strolled. The moonlight kissed Cherrie's hair and made Davy see a halo above her.

"Cherrie, do you remember when you said you hoped I was only thinking about you and no other girls? When you said you think of me as your guy?" Davy was scarcely whispering as he stopped, searched Cherrie's face with love in his eyes, and traced her jawline with his finger.

Cherrie caught her breath as she touched his hand on her face. "Yes, I remember."

"I know you were disappointed that I didn't have much to say at the time, but I want to thank you for being honest with me and for giving me time to make sense of my feelings." Davy was surprised to see Cherrie's lip begin to tremble at his words. "Wait, Cherrie darling. Let me finish. When I went home that night, I talked to Peter. He has a way of helping you by saying very little. He lets you talk until you find the answer yourself. He played me part of a new song he's working on. Cherrie, it's unbelievable. It's mystical and magical and spiritual. It's not finished yet so I can't tell you what it says, but I can tell you that it has made me realize how much I care for you. I didn't want to admit that I was falling for you. It seemed too soon and too intense. I've felt what I thought was love before. Now I know it was something else. It wasn't at all what I feel for you. But if I'm not too late, I want you to know that I'm in love with you. You, and only you, Cherrie Bennett."

Davy was standing facing Cherrie with her hands in his. The wind blew his hair ever so slightly, and he reminded Cherrie of Romeo as he pledged his love for her under the midnight California sky. For a long moment she just stood there. Davy waited, fearing that her earlier emotion had been one of regret rather than sadness.

Finally, she broke her silence. "I hoped you would love me because I've loved you since that night at the Troubadour." No more words were necessary after that. Their embrace said it all.
