Chapter 7

Back at the pad, Peter was sitting in the living room reading when Davy came in.

"Hey, mate! Have a good time tonight?" Peter asked. He looked comfortable and relaxed in his pullover, jeans, and mismatched socks. Davy grinned at his pal.

"Yeah, Pete. Cherrie's a groovy girl." Davy took off his jacket and hung it on the hook by the mirror.

"I hear a `but' coming. What's up?" Peter laid his book down and waited for Davy to reply.

Davy sat down opposite Peter but didn't talk right away. He seemed deep in thought. Peter knew Davy was trying to come to terms with something so he didn't hurry him.

Finally, he looked at Peter. "Why do girls always have to ask for promises when everything is cool and fun? I've only known Cherrie for a couple of weeks and she already thinks of me as `her guy.' I don't need things to get complicated, man." Davy got up and began pacing the floor.

"What do you want, Davy? Where do you see this going?" Peter walked over to where the guys kept their instruments and picked up his guitar. He came back over and sat down. He softly started plucking the strings. It always helped him to think, and he sensed that Davy would feel more at ease at the same time.

"Where do I see this going? How am I supposed to know in such a short time! I like being with her. I like holding her, kissing her, talking to her. There may be something more to it in time, but I don't wanna be forced into anything. I won't be rushed!" Davy didn't realize that he had raised his voice. Peter simply watched Davy, waiting for him to calm down.

Suddenly Davy seemed to lose the legs from under him. He dropped onto the sofa and looked incredulously at Peter. "I'm falling in love with her. No matter how many different ways I try to talk myself out of it, I come up with the same conclusion. It's crackers, feeling this way this soon." Davy's handsome face was lined with worry.

Peter continued playing his guitar. "Listen to this, Davy. I've been working on it for awhile." Peter began to sing an Eastern-influenced melody:

Some thing doesn't change
There is only one
Always changing inside
What does it become?

Can you dig it?
Do you know?
Would you care to let it show?

"Wow, Peter! That's great, man. Really outasight! What does it mean?" Davy momentarily forgot his worry as he let Peter's lyrics sink into his mind.

Peter got up, gave his friend a wise and mysterious smile, and said, "I can't answer that for you, David. That is a question you must answer for yourself." Peter set aside the guitar, picked up his book, and retreated to his bedroom, leaving Davy to ponder upon Cherrie's words and Peter's song.

After Davy had been weighing all that had been said that evening for awhile, he decided to take a break. He found his thoughts running in circles, and he was getting more confused instead of less. He turned on the television and started watching an old movie. Before long he was snoring softly. He didn't hear Mike come in with Patty.

"Oh, darn! There's somebody here, Mike. I was hoping you and I could be alone." Patty's disappointment showed clearly on her face upon hearing the television playing.

"I live with three other people, Patty. It's kinda hard to be alone here. Let me just grab a blanket and we'll go down to the beach. The moon is beautiful tonight." Mike gave his girlfriend a quick kiss, took her by the hand, and started through the pad. Just then, Davy sat up and yawned.

"Who's here? What time is it?"

"It's me and Patty, Davy. It's a little after midnight. Sorry we woke you up. We're just going down to the beach. Do you know where the blanket is that we had down there the other day?"

"It should be out on the deck. So you're going to the beach, huh? Michael, what exactly do you have in mind with this young lady?" Davy smiled mischievously.

Mike gave him a warning look. "Why don't you go on to bed, shotgun? You must be pretty tired."

"Patty, I think I should accompany the two of you. Your virtue could be at stake." Davy stood, bowed low, and winked at the laughing Patty as he straightened up.

"Mister Jones, I believe I will accept your gracious invitation. A lady's honor should be protected."

"Take one step outside and you'll have me to reckon with!" Mike figured he'd better end this little scene before Davy carried it any further.

"Put `em up. You forget I was a featherweight champion in England. I'll mop the floor with you!" Davy danced around and pretended to shadowbox.

Mike gave Davy a light shove and continued onto the deck with Patty. "Good night, Davy. We're leaving now, Davy. And don't try to follow us!"

"I love it when you take charge, Mike," Patty cooed as she waved to Davy at the bottom of the steps.

Davy watched as the couple walked toward the beach with their arms around each other. He envied their easy relationship. He sighed as he walked to his bedroom. He had a lot of things to sort out.
