Chapter 5

The next two weeks flew by as The Monkees prepared for a weekend gig in Arizona. Davy saw Cherrie as often as possible, but not often enough for his satisfaction.

On Thursday the telephone rang in the pad, and Micky answered it. "Hi, Cherrie. How are you? That's cool. No, Davy's not here. Do you want me to have him call you? Well, we're going to be leaving for Phoenix tomorrow after rehearsal. Yeah, we'll just be gone two days. We're doing two shows, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. I'll tell him you called when he gets in. Okay, take it easy. `Bye."

"Who was on the phone?" asked Mike as he came into the room. He was carrying his guitar and the schedule for the upcoming concerts in Phoenix. "I'm still waiting for the guy from the truck rental place to call me back, and I need to make sure that Becky is on top of the costume situation." The Monkees now had a manager and the record company arranged for a crew to take care of every aspect of their show. The guys didn't make it this far by being sloppy and uninvolved, though. Mike was a stickler for details, which is why The Monkees' concerts were so successful.

"Sorry, but it wasn't for you. Cherrie was looking for Davy."

Mike furrowed his brow slightly. "You mean he's actually not with her now? That surprises me. He goes head over heels too fast. What does he really know about this chick?"

"He knows she's beautiful, she's sweet, and she thinks he's tall. That's all he needs to know, man." Micky's twinkling eyes showed he was kidding. "What's the matter? Has she done anything that makes you think he should drop her?"

"Naw, it's not that. I just think he should take his time to get to know girls better. It's so easy for him to attract a girl's attention. He doesn't stop to think that the girl may not be right for him."

"Mike, if I didn't know better, I'd think you're beginning to fuss over us like a mother hen!" Micky began making clucking noises while Mike laughed. The phone rang again. The subject was forgotten as Mike finalized the plans for the truck rental.
