Chapter 3

As promised, the Monkees and the girls went to Dreamland Amusement Park. Micky and Tena were so excited they couldn't decide which way to go first, so they each ran in opposite directions, turned and ran into each other falling to the ground. Mike, Callie and the rest rushed to their sides. The two were just dazed from the impact. When the group was sure that they were OK, Mike and Callie warned them about being more careful. With the understanding that all were to meet in the picnic area at 1:00 p.m., they went in separate directions to enjoy the day.

Mike and Callie decided to try the see-saw. They laughed as they began to play. Although it was a bit uncharacteristic for both of them, they were actually having fun.

Davy and Fay were on the swings. Davy was pushing Fay who kept insisting on going higher. Davy caught sight of Mike and Callie happily playing and forgot about Fay and the swing. While looking at Mike and Callie, Fay's swing came toward him. Instead of being ready to push her, Fay rammed into Davy and knocked him to the ground. The abrupt impact made Fay fall out of the swing face-first in the sand. Mike and Callie saw what happened and abandoned their fun to and rush to Davy and Fay.

"Man, you OK?" Mike asked Davy as he helped him up.

"Fay? Are you alright?" Callie asked as she helped brush the sand from Fay's face.

"I guess I got distracted Mike," Davy offered.

?"Well pay more attention. Remember, we came here to have fun," Mike said.

Before Davy could respond, Fay was pulling him toward the merry-go-round. Perhaps the operated rides would be safer!

That was four down and two to go. Somehow they knew that Peter and Mari would need their help and they weren't wrong.

Mari and Peter were at the giant slide. They decided to race each other down. The race got off to a good start, until they began to playfully hit at each other going down. Mari's bracelet became tangled with Peter's watch. With their arms entangled, they went airborne and crashed face-first into the straw at the end of the slide. When they looked up, Mike and Callie stood on each side of them offering a hand. Peter and Mari smiled almost identical sheepish smiles and allowed themselves to be helped up.

"I guess the best thing we can do is go set up the picnic area," Mike sighed.

"A helper's work is never done! C'mon Papa Nez!" Callie laughed.

"Lead the way, Mama Callie!" Mike replied.

Mike and Callie set up the picnic table; all they had to do now was wait for the guys. As expected, Micky and Tena raced to the table. Davy and Fay walked to the area engaged in conversation, and Peter and Mari held a hopping contest to the table.

After lunch, the group sat around joking and talking and the Monkees serenaded the girls. After the impromptu concert, The Monkees and the girls began to get sleepy and settled in for a nap. Mike and Callie cleared the area of picnic items. Mike looked at Callie and extended his hand.

"This time I promise I won't fall asleep," he said. Callie smiled and took his hand. As they walked toward the park's nature trail, six sleepy heads rose a bit and looked at the two walking away, then returned to their naps.

Mike continued to compose songs and the girls were enjoying their third week at the beach. The Monkees got a gig at the Club Cassandra and all seemed well. But time was winding down for Callie and the fairies. Their mission was almost complete. One day, while the rest of the Monkees and the girls were out on separate errands, Mike stopped by to see Callie.

"Enjoying a little free time?" Mike asked as he stood in the door.

"Oh, just-just writing a bit," Callie said as she quickly grabbed the papers and motioned for Mike to come in and sit. Mike noticed that the papers looked like scrolls and suddenly stopped. He blinked his eyes and shook head. "Must be the sun," Mike convinced himself. Those could NOT have been scrolls. He looked again and saw they were just notebook papers Callie held in her hands.

"What's wrong, Mike," Callie asked.

"Oh, nothing. You write?" Mike asked.

"I dabble a bit. How's your writing coming along?" Callie questioned taking the focus off her.

"That's what I came to talk to you about. We want you guys to come to the Pad tonight. We want your opinion on a new song I wrote," Mike said.

"What time?" Callie asked.

"6:30 OK?" Mike suggested.

"We'll be there!" Callie replied.

Mike left and Callie sighed a sigh of relief. "Can't get too sloppy, Callie girl" she thought to herself. What she was actually doing was completing the paperwork on Mike. Normally she would have been on guard, but her thoughts had been distracted lately by Mike. And yes, she was writing on scrolls!

At 6:30, Callie and the girls sat before the Monkees as they took their places on the bandstand at the Pad.

"We'd like you opinion on a special song I wrote. This is for you, Callie," Mike then counted off and sang, "The Kind of Girl I Could Love."

Callie was use to songs dedicated in her honor. They were usually songs of gratitude. But as Mike sang, this song was different. This was heartfelt and Callie felt it. She smiled as Mike sang, but deep inside she felt a twang of sadness. She truly liked Mike. They had so much in common, but she knew the complications. It was at that moment that she made a decision.

"Well? How did you like it, Callie?" Mike asked expectantly at the song's end.

"Beautiful! Just, beautiful!" Callie whispered. She walked up to Mike and kissed him.

"Tha' turned out rather well," Davy said.

"Yeah, and I think she liked it too!" Peter added.

"Peter!!" six voices said at the same time.

"What?" Peter asked innocently.

"Yeah, what?" Mari asked just as innocently. The six just rolled their eyes and laughed. After hanging around the Pad laughing, singing silly songs and dancing (yes Mike and Callie danced), it was time to say goodnight. Callie and the fairies were escorted home by the Monkees. They said their goodnights and parted ways.

"Fairies, we must leave tonight," Callie solemnly said when they were inside.

"Do we have to?" the fairies protested.

"Yes, I -- we have to," Callie sadly said. At that moment a silver tear fell from her cheek and she changed into her muse form. The fairies knew Callie cared for Mike and his song had moved her to feelings she didn't know she had. They began to comfort her and tried to cheer her up.

"What would I do without you guys?" she smiled. "Well. Let's prepare. We can't waste too much time." The completely decorated apartment was actually an illusion. The furniture vanished, but the calming atmosphere remained. When their work was done, the muse and the fairies, in their true forms prepared to say their good-byes to the Monkees.
