Micky, Mike and Davy gathered around Peter as he told them about his trip to the dentist.
"She had her mask on long before the dentist got started." Peter said, his speech a little slurred because of his numbed mouth, "And her eyes were so beautiful, and she kept staring at me. I get the feeling I've seen her before."
"That is strange." Davy admitted, then pointed at the bottle in Peter's hand. "You have to take that stuff too?"
"Yeah, I've got an infection and this will clear it up." Peter replied, then yawned. "I'm gonna go take a nap."
"Go ahead, shotgun." Mike said, "You feel like eating supper before our gig tonight?"
"Maybe later I'll eat." Peter replied, then got up and went into his bedroom.
About five minutes later, the phone rang and Mike picked it before Davy could get to it.
"Hello?" Mike asked. "Yes, this is the Monkees' residence." There was a long pause before Mike spoke again.
"He did? When? Did you look for him?" Mike asked the person on the other end of the line. Groot is free too? What about Mendoza's daughter? Okay. Thanks, officer. We'll keep an eye out for him. Goodbye." Mike hung up the phone and turned to his Micky and Davy.
"I don't believe this." Mike said, shaking his head.
"Don't believe what, Mike?" Micky asked, `"Who was on the phone and why were you talking about Mendoza and Groot?"
"That was Officer Jay from the police department." Mike replied, "He told me Dr. Mendoza escaped from jail last night, just before his hearing today. They searched his castle but only found Groot living there."
"Oh oh." Micky said, "And why is Groot free?"
"The officer said Groot had been freed from the hospital since there wasn't enough evidence to hold him." Mike replied.
"Not enough..." Micky said exasperated, throwing his hands up, "I don't believe this either."
"Unbelievable." Davy said rolling his eyes, "And what about Mendoza's beautiful daughter?"
Mike shrugged. "That's the really weird part. The officer said they never found any record of her, and Mendoza denies ever having a daughter."
"Well, that girl who hid in our bedroom closet at Mendoza's castle was real." Micky said.
"So were her kisses." Davy said with a smile, which quickly faded, "Hmmm...now that I think of it, they were a little rough." He continued, rubbing his bottom lip at the memory, "In fact, I think she even drew blood."
"Well, the officer said Dr. Mendoza gave them no reason to believe he'd come after us." Mike said with a sigh, "But we still should be careful."
"Should we tell Peter?" Davy asked, looking at the bedroom he shared with him.
"No not now, he'll just get upset. Let him sleep." Mike replied, "We'll tell him later."
"I'm going to make sure the doors and windows are locked." Micky said and went to do just that.
"Go ahead." Mike said, "I think I'm going to take a nap too."
"How can you sleep at a time like this?" Davy wanted to know.
"There's nothing we can do right now, Davy." Mike replied, "The officer said Dr. Mendoza probably won't come after us, so all we can do right now is hope the police get him."
"Mike's right, Davy." Micky added, coming back from locking the back porch door, "We'll just keep our eyes and ears open and let the police know if we see or hear anything. I'm gonna go read a book."
Davy just shook his head as his two band mates settled down on the couches.
"You two take it easy then." He said, "I'll keep watch."
"Suit yourself, Davy." Mike said with a yawn. Within a few minutes, he was asleep.
Within a few minutes of Mike falling asleep, Micky did the same. Davy sat down on the chaise lounge and despite himself was soon asleep as well.
--------
Micky's book sliding to the floor woke him up. He looked at his watch and let out a yell.
"What's the matter?" Davy shouted, coming awake instantly. "Is it Dr. Mendoza?"
"No, we're gonna be late for our gig!" Micky shouted, jumping to his feet, then screamed again as he nearly crashed into Peter. "Peter don't do that!"
"I'm sorry, I was just going to wake you guys and tell you we're gonna be late!" Peter said.
"What's all the shouting about?" Mike yawned.
"We're gonna be late for our gig!" Micky, Peter and Davy all said together.
That got Mike's attention. "Well, what are you standing around for?" He demanded, getting to his feet, "Let's get moving!"
In record time, the four Monkees changed into their eight-button blue stage uniforms, loaded up the Monkeemobile, and headed out to their gig. In all the excitement, Micky, Mike and Davy forgot to tell Peter about the policeman's phone call.
