Chapter 2

Peter was in luck. His dentist, Dr. I. Yank, had a cancellation and was able to take him that afternoon. So Peter drove the Monkeemobile down to Dr. Yank's office and went inside.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Tork." The receptionist said, "How are you doing?"

"This tooth is still bothering me." Peter replied, rubbing his cheek, "I guess I'll need that crown."

"Yeah, you can't do anything when your tooth is hurting you." She said.

The inner office door opened and another lady came out.

"Mr. Tork?" She asked.

"That's me." Peter said, and followed her inside and over to another room.

"Doctor Yank has a new dental assistant, Mr. Tork." The lady said, "She's very nice."

"What's her name?" Peter asked.

"Nadia." The lady replied as they came to the door of the exam room, "Here's Mr. Tork, Nadia."

Peter walked in to find Nadia with her back to him, hurriedly putting a surgical mask on her face. Once the mask was on she turned to him.

"Hello, Mr. Tork." She said, "Please have a seat."

"Sure, Nadia." Peter replied, sitting down in the dental chair, thinking it odd that Nadia had her mask on already. He looked at her dark brown eyes, both beautiful and mysterious at the same time. Peter thought he had seen her somewhere before but couldn't be sure because her surgical mask covered her nose and mouth.

"So you're Dr. Yank's new assistant?" Peter asked.

"Yes, I just started here a few days ago." Nadia replied, putting a paper bib around his neck.

Further questions were put aside as Dr. Yank, a middle-aged man with dark hair, walked in.

"Hello, Peter." The dentist said, "How are you today?"

"Other than this tooth, I'm fine." Peter replied.

"I hear you've been having problems with that tooth." Dr. Yank said, putting on gloves.

"Yeah, I hope you can fix it." Peter said.

"I'm sure I can." Dr. Yank smiled, and took a dental mirror from the tray next to Peter's chair.

He quickly looked at the offending tooth, then tapped on it with the mirror's handle. Peter jumped a little.

"Did that hurt?" Dr. Yank asked.

Peter nodded his head.

"Well, Peter." The dentist said, stepping back, "It looks like you've waited too long to see me. I'm going to take an x-ray, but I think you've developed an abscess. I'll need to give you a root canal."

Unfortunately, Dr. Yank was right. Nadia quickly took an x-ray which revealed an abscess developing under the tooth. It had already killed one nerve and was starting to work on another. Nadia quickly gathered the instruments the dentist would need to do the root canal.

"This is gonna hurt isn't it?" Peter asked, cringing a little.

"I'm going to give you a shot of Novocain." Dr. Yank replied, "It will numb you up for some time so it won't hurt."

The dentist gave Peter the shot while Nadia, without being asked, held Peter's hand. Her hands were ice cold. He looked up into Nadia's eyes and found them beautiful but also cold, unsettling. Her eyes never left Peter's. Peter closed his eyes to stop himself from looking at her.

Soon, Peter's mouth was numb and the dentist began his work. Doctor Yank drilled out the inside of the tooth, removed the nerves, placed pins inside the tooth and put a temporary filling on top. When he was done, Dr. Yank wrote out a prescription and handed it to Peter, while Nadia removed Peter's bib.

"Here you are." Dr. Yank said, "Take this prescription and have it filled at the drug store."

"What is it for?" Peter asked, taking the paper.

"It's for anti-biotics." Dr. Yank replied, "You have an infection in your tooth right now, I need for that to clear up before I do any more work. I'll see you again in about a week."

"Okay, and thank you, Doctor." Peter said, shaking the dentist's hand, he turned to say goodbye to Nadia, but she was gone.

Peter left the dentist's office with his tooth feeling much better, but his mind ill at ease.

--------

Nadia's father was beside himself with joy as she told him what had happened that day.

"You've done well, daughter. Now we know where they live." Dr. Mendoza said, re-reading the piece of paper in his hand for the hundredth time. Nadia had taken the Monkees' home address from Peter's file.

"Before all we had was their telephone number, master." Groot said.

"Yes, Groot." Dr. Mendoza said, "Still, we must be careful. The police were here today looking for me...as if they could find me in this castle! Ha Ha! Now I can start planning my revenge!"
