Chapter 11: Engagement

Synopsis: Molly and Davy get engaged!

Whenever Molly wasn't in school or Davy wasn't working or trying to get an acting job, they were always together. He would go to all her school functions she was involved in like her games, dance recitals, and choir concerts. One day when Davy came over to Molly's house for dinner, she thought he was up to something but she wasn't quite sure what. It didn't bother her too much. She just thought he was being himself, but that didn't stop her from asking.

"Davy, did I tell you how wonderful you look in that blue sweater?" she asked sweetly playing his vain side.

"I don't think you did," he said before he reached up to kiss her. "But I'm glad you did."

"Now here's my moment," she thought. "Davy," she said even sweetly than before, "What are you up to, Chico?"

"Nothing you need to worry about right now," he proclaimed.

She pouted her lips knowing that most of the time it worked. "No, luv, that's not going to work this time," he told her matter-of-factly.

"Damn," she whispered to herself and huffed a little. "Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe he isn't up to anything," she thought.

"Molly, where's your dad?" Davy asked.

"I don't know but we can ask Mom," she stated.

"OK," he stated and started to walk with him but he stopped her. "No, I want to talk with her myself."

"Okay," she said a little confused, but let him do his thing alone. Though that thought didn't keep her curiosity at bay. She wanted to know why he wanted to talk to both parents without her.

About thirty minutes later both of her parents and Davy entered the living room together. Her father was a tall man with short blonde hair with a huge smile on his face that was accented by his high cheek bones. The smile was so bright the smile was seen in his blue eyes. Her mother was happy, well maybe not as happy as her husband but happy none the less. The Hispanic woman was smiling but it seemed half the sparkle was gone from her eyes which kind of worried Molly. Davy as usual had that cheeky grin on his face. It was so infectious she couldn't help but smile.

"Molly," her father said in his deep, happy yet caring voice, "I have great news for you: Davy has just asked me for permission to marry you. I approve of it only if you want to."

Her facial expression quickly changed from happy to shock. "No wonder Mom looks the way she does," Molly thought. Molly was completely speechless. She was quiet for so long the smile on Davy's face began to wane.

Soon after she regained her ability to talk, she stated, "I don't know what to say. Yes, I do. Dad, can I speak to you alone?" Her dad nodded his head. "Excuse us for a moment," she voiced. "Don't worry, Davy. I'm just going to talk to my dad and I'll come back and give you an answer," she added before going into the next room.

"She's just in shock. Don't worry," Molly's mother advised.

Meanwhile with Molly and her Dad...

"Why'd you need to talk to me alone, Molly?" her father inquired of her.

"Dad, I haven't told him yet. I want to marry him, but what about that important detail? I mean you know children will be in the picture soon plus the Book and what if the children start doing the things I did when I was an infant and a toddler?" she frantically asked.

"Mol, I know it's your choice to tell who you want, but when it comes to someone this close to you, you usually tell them before now. I mean you've been going steady with him for 3 years," he stated with lots of emotion. "Though I'm not trying to lecture you, but try to tell him before the wedding." He added softly and put his hand underneath her chin and gave a look that told her he was beginning to reminisce about the past.

"Ok, I will Dad," she promised.

"All right, crisis taken cared of for now, Molly?" he joked with his eldest daughter. Molly nodded her head. "All right let's join your mom and Davy."

When they waked back into the living room, Molly embraced Davy and told him, "Yes I'll marry you, David Jones!"

"Yes!" he exclaimed then kissed her passionately on the lips.

When they finally stopped kissing a thought went through Molly's head. "What are we going to do about the rings?"

"We've discussed it and we're going to let you use the rings that have been passed down on both sides. So it's your choice," her Dad explained.

She gave her father a knowing look. She knew her father knew that she would choose the set that Fiona Lily- her great-great grandmother/the family's long since dead alien matriarch and her great-great grandfathers' set. "I know which set I want to use, but only if Davy wants to use them as well."

"Anything you want, luv," Davy assured her.

She couldn't help but think about the ring that her grandfather had specifically made for her grandmother. The silver band cradling the blue Artesian gem that resembled many of the rare blue diamonds found on Earth, but twice as lovely. The beauty never dulls or fades and in its purest form can cut through tougher things than glass.

"Not to burst you bubble you can only use them until you get your own set. After all, those are precious family heirlooms," her dad proclaimed.

"I know, Dad," Molly agreed. "We could pick our set out and pay for them bit by bit," She told Davy.

He agreed.

"Wait, when are we going to do this? What about school?" she asked frantically.

"You sure have a lot of questions, luv," Davy teased. "We'll sort them out later. For now let's have dinner with your parents," he said calming her down.

"All right," she agreed.

--------------------------------

On the school day following the engagement, Molly and Davy met with the principal of the high school. They were sitting in ugly, burnt brown chairs across from the principal's desk. Mr. Paxson, who usually had a cheery disposition, looked very irritated. It was like he knew what this was about before they even started talking. Molly just wanted this over with, because the more she stayed in there the more she felt like she was suffocating from all the tension that was building, but they were waiting on her mother to arrive for this meeting to begin.

A few moments later a Hispanic woman wearing a navy blue dress and black heels with her hair up in a bun came bursting into the office.

"Sorry that I'm late. I had to drop off the other children off at their school and traffic was worse than normal," she apologized.

"No problem, Mrs. Jackson. The important thing is that you are here," Mr. Paxson stated. "Now this meeting can begin."

"I'm sure you know why we are here," Molly said stating the obvious in her mind.

"That Davy and I are going to get married."

"And you need my permission to go to school while married?" the principal finished with his brow becoming furrowed. "Why are you getting married? Are you expecting?"

"No, nothing like that," Molly answered. "We just really love each other and don't want to put off the inevitable."

The principal gave a look that read `how many kinds of stupid are you two?' but the two young lovebirds ignored it.

"Sir, please. I promise that it will not interfere with my studies," Molly assured the older man. "Besides what will happen to the team," she stated playing his ego. "I mean you could always find a new player, but they won't be able to do the things that I do." Then she gave him the sad puppy dog eyes look that would help her win over the principal.

"Well, we could always need you on the team and you are a great student. You have so many other things on your plate and you are still able to do well in school," he said as if he was convincing himself. "Of course you can stay."

"Thank you, sir," Molly and her mother said, simultaneously.

"You are very welcome," the man before them stated. "So what are we going to be calling you soon?"

"Molly Jones," the teenaged girl answered.

"I'd say an early congrats are in order," the principal proclaimed as the look in his face finally lightened up with the smile that usually plastered his face. "Oh, before I forget, is your soon to be husband going to be joining you here?"

"No, sir," Molly confessed. "He quit school when his mother died and just started working and has been doing that ever since. He's an actor and a really good one."

"Well, however long that will last. Young man, you should really think about going back to school, but since you are not my son, I cannot force you," Mr. Paxson said, sadly. "Just think about it."

"I will, but I can always go back to England and finish my apprenticeship," the British boy said, omitting a certain part of the truth.

"Oh, well yeah, you could do that. Since I have approved of this unconventional way of life, this meeting is over and you may go back to class, Molly," the principal said as he scrawled his signature on a slip of paper to Molly. "Here you go."

"Bye, Mom and Davy," she said as she embraced both of them. When let go of both of them, she picked up her textbooks and walked out of the office to get to her first class as quickly as possible. Thanking the fates both Earth and non-Earth alike for things going better than she thought they would.
