Chapter 15

Santa stood on the balcony of his castle overlooking the plain. Below him, in neat rows, were hundreds of toy soldiers. Elves were frantically getting them ready, winding them up, straightening their hats, making sure they had ammo. Finally, Santa got the all-clear from Toc. Santa pushed a button on a box in his hand. Immediately, the soldiers came to life and stood at attention.

"Men," Santa shouted down to the soldiers, "Our land is under attack by the trolls. They are being led by their queen and an evil wizard! Your orders are to march on the troll lair and stop them from digging their tunnels. There are also four male humans that are prisoners. You must rescue them as well. Now, be off and good luck to you!"

The soldiers turned and marched away into the troop carriers that would take them to the trolls.

Glick walked in without knocking into Davy's chambers. Lisa and Laura had been keeping an eye on the door, so that Davy had plenty of time to hide Glick's spell book before he entered. Grizelda had gone back to her own chambers.

"Hello, your majesty." Glick said smoothly, "I've come to tell you, Davius, that it's almost time for your moment of glory!"

"What do you mean?" Davy asked slowly

"Why the moment you push the button that explodes the last of the rock underneath Santa's castle! The moment that Santa's castle crumbles to the ground! The moment Christmas is no more! HAHA!" Glick laughed hysterically.

"Before I do anything, I want to see Micky, Mike and Peter!" Davy demanded. "In person!"

"You can see them just as well from my TV." Glick answered sharply.

"How do I know it's not a trick?" Davy demanded. "How do I know they're not already dead?"

Glick sighed. "Very well, I'll give you a few minutes. But remember, I'll be watching!" He pointed a finger at Davy and Davy disappeared.

The three Monkees sat against a cold, stone wall in one of the trolls' tunnels. After Lisa had pushed the button on the box she had, they had appeared here, surrounded by trolls. There had been no chance of escape. The digging machine was turned off right now, but sometimes it would roar to life, scaring them half to death. They were sitting bound hand and foot and gagged at the end of the tunnel, with the digging machine blocking the only way out. To pass the time, they tried to untie themselves and hum Christmas carols. Right now they were humming an old carol named 'Riu Chiu'. It helped keep their minds off what must be happening up above: that Davy was probably being forced to be 'Davius' again, and leading the trolls against Santa.

Suddenly, with a flash of blue light, Davy appeared in front of them! The three of them, jumped back in fright at first, then they sagged in relief. Davy dropped to his knees in relief that his friends were OK.

"Hi, guys," Davy said quietly, "Don't get up on my account." He joked weakly.

"Mmmmm!" Micky said and nodded with his head at Davy's clothes.

"Yeah, I have to be Davius again for Glick. Otherwise, you three would be dead." Davy said quietly. "I have my memories of my life as Davius again, and after what you three have been through…" Davy paused, looking down, "I won't let anything else happen to you."

Micky, Mike and Peter shook their heads at Davy. They didn't want him to help Glick, even at the cost of their own lives.

Up in Davy's chambers, Glick carefully watched what was going on. Lisa and Laura decided to make their move so Davy could talk freely to his friends. They came up on either side of Glick and began running their fingers through his short, reddish-brown hair.

"Oh, great Wizard Glick," Lisa said sweetly, "Is there anything else you want us to do?"

As they hoped, Glick turned away from the TV and to them.

"Um, yeah, keep doing that, it feels good!" Glick exclaimed.

Hoping Lisa and Laura did their job, Davy crawled over to his bound friends.

"I told Grizelda what's going on, and she's on our side now." Davy whispered, "So is his two birds, Lisa and Laura." Davy pulled something out of his cloak. It was the diamond ring he had given Grizelda when they became engaged. He reached behind Micky and put the ring into his bound hands.

"I don't have much time left, fellas, so I can't cut you loose. Maybe Grizelda's ring can help."

"Mm...MM!" Micky said pointed with his chin at his pocket.

"What, Micky?" Davy asked.

"Mmmm!" Micky insisted, looking at his shirt pocket.

Davy reached into Micky's shirt pocket and pulled out the little book he had used to kill the giant mole. Davy quickly put the book into his cloak.

"Thanks mate." Davy said, then gave Micky a hug. Davy did the same with Mike and Peter. With their hands tied behind their backs, they couldn't return the hug. There were tears in their eyes. Davy's eyes were wet too. If his plan went wrong, he'd never see his friends again. Suddenly, Davy popped out of sight. It was time to go.

~~~~~~~
Davy, Grizelda, Lisa and Laura stood in a side tunnel chamber near where the digging was nearly complete. Pretty soon, the tunnels would be done under Santa's castle. All that was needed was a little bit of TNT to knock away the support beams and Santa's castle would collapse under its own weight. Lisa and Laura assured Davy that Glick had been distracted long enough for him to talk to his friends. Now, all they had to do was wait for the big moment when 'Davius' would make his speech and order the support beams blown.
Suddenly, running down towards them was Grizelda's lackeys, Hither and Yon.
"Your Majesties!" Hither said, bowing down, "Terrible news!"
Davy and Grizelda looked at each other.
"What?" Grizelda demanded.
"Santa's toy soldiers are on their way here!" Yon replied, "They'll be here soon! What are your orders?"
Davy smiled. "Your orders are...to do nothing. Let them come!"
"Wh...what?" Hither gasped. "Do nothing?!"
"Something wrong with your hearing?" Davy snapped, "It's too little, too late for Santa now! His toys can't stop me! HAHA!"
"But, we must close the above-ground entrances!" Yon exclaimed.
"No, I don't think so." Davy said.
The truth dawned on the two trolls.
"You're not Davius!" Hither shouted.
"I never was." Davy said calmly. Then suddenly, he grabbed Hither and Yon's heads and bashed them together. They fell to the floor unconscious. Lisa and Laura ran over and dragged the two trolls out of sight to another tunnel.
"Santa's soldiers couldn't have come at a better time." Davy whispered, "They'll draw the workers away from the tunnels."
Glick walked into the chamber, looking quite pleased.
"Ah, your majesties, it's time to go! The hour is at hand to destroy Christmas forever!" He bowed and swept his hand out. "After you."
Davy took Grizelda's arm and they walked out. Glick followed them, with Lisa and Laura bringing up the rear. They walked into a larger chamber with hundreds of trolls standing around. Troll guards cleared a path and the procession made its way up to a rocky shelf. Davy and Grizelda climbed up, while Glick, Lisa and Laura stayed below. Opposite of where Davy and Grizelda stood was a large tunnel. Above the end of that tunnel, was Santa's castle. A few stone support beams were all that stood between Christmas and disaster.
Glick nodded at Davy. Davy nodded back, but not at Glick. He nodded to Lisa and Laura standing behind Glick. They silently moved away and out of the chamber. Glick was too busy watching Davy to notice. Davy stepped forward on the shelf and raised his hands for silence.
"My fellow trolls," Davy shouted, "today will go down in troll history as our greatest day ever!"
Huge cheers greeted this remark. Davy waved his hands for silence again.
"Today will be the day we throw off the chains of tyranny, to realize our own destiny, to no longer be led astray!" Davy cried happily, flicking his eyes over to Glick, who was beginning to wonder where Davy was going with his speech.
You'll find out soon, wizard, Davy thought.
