Chapter 8

At Santa's palace, Mike and Peter were stuffing backpacks, given to them by Tic and Toc, with all sorts of equipment.

The two had planned to head to where the evil Trolls, Glick and Grizelda were keeping their friends.

"I wish I can go along to help, I have to stay.  Christmas is just a short time away," Santa said.

"Don't worry, Santa we'll be OK," said Peter.

"I just hope we can get to Davy and Micky in time," said Mike.

The three then headed outside, along with Mrs. Clause as well.

"I packed you boys up some Cocoa to keep you warm," Mrs. Clause said, handing some thermoses to Mike and Peter.

"Thank you Mrs. Clause, that's very groovy of you," said Peter taking a thermos with a smile.

Just then, Tic and Toc came out, from the sled garage driving two snowmobiles.

"It's a long walk to get to the evil trolls," said Tic.

"You may need these, you'll get there quicker," said Toc.

"Thanks guys," said Mike climbing on of the mobiles, while Peter jumped on the other one.

The two then took off in search of their friends.

"Good luck," Santa called back.

"And be careful," said Mrs. Clause as she and her husband waved from a distance.

Back at the dark, dreary castle, Micky was being held prisoner locked below in the dungeon.

His coat, gloves, sweater and long sleeved shirt were taken from him, So he was just clad in jeans and his T-shirt, and he was very cold. Micky blew into his hands to keep warm, but his breath was almost ice.  Just then, he heard footsteps coming down stairs.

Micky hid his face in his hands, because he was afraid to know who was coming.

"Cold enough for you yet?" asked a voice.

Micky uncovered his face. It was Davius standing right before him.

"You! What have you done to my friend!" Micky shouted. He tried to grab Davius, but his wrists were chained to the wall, as well as his ankles.

Davius just stood there and laughed.

"You don't feel that strong anymore, you poor little weakling." He chuckled in an evil tone of voice.

Micky then began to shiver from begin cold, and began to sneeze.

"You know, you can be nice and warm up there, if you join us." Davius said.

"Never, I rather freeze down here." Micky said with a cough.

"That's too bad."

Davius turned his back, and headed back up the stairs.

As Davius left, a small tear trickled down Micky's check, which then froze on his face.  He then began to cough some more.

Mike and Peter sped off toward what Santa's map showed was the closest of the troll's underground entrances. It made sense that Micky and Davy were probably taken below from there, and so that was where they'd begin their search. The two men parked their snowmobiles behind a hill that was near a cave. They got off their rides and while Peter put on his backpack, Mike looked through his. Mike pulled out a pair of binoculars, then slowly climbed up the snowy hill. Using his binoculars, he made out a pair of trolls guarding the entrance to the underground. They both were carrying nasty-looking spears and looked very alert for trouble. Mike scrambled down the hill.

"It's one of their entrances all right." Mike said quietly. "There's two armed guards we have to get past."

"I know how we can do that!" Peter exclaimed.

Mike looked at Peter dubiously. "How?"

~~~~~~~
The two troll guards were silently walking back and forth across the entrance to the cave. All they had heard so far was the wind blowing. Suddenly they heard a clucking noise a little off to their left.
"Cluck...cluckcluckcluck...cluck!" Went the sound.
"What is that?" One of the trolls asked the other.
"Might be a top-sider." The other said, "Let's go see."
The two trolls followed the clucking sound to a large rock. One troll went around one side of the rock, the other troll went around the other side. They found a top-sider wearing a green wool hat sitting behind the rock making the clucking sounds. He looked up and smiled at the trolls.
"Uh...Hi guys?" Mike said uncertainly. This was his first close-up look at a troll, and didn't like it. "Like my imitation of the Texas Prairie Chicken?"
The two trolls aimed their spears right at Mike's heart.
"You will come with us, top-sider!" One of the trolls snarled.
"Um, I don't think so...now Peter!" Mike yelled.
Nothing happened.
"Peter!" Mike yelled again. The trolls advanced on Mike.
Suddenly, there was a mini-avalanche of snow falling on the two trolls. They were knocked unconscious.
"Sorry Mike," Peter said from the hill above the rock, "The snow wouldn't budge at first."
"That's OK, Pete," Mike said, relieved, "Lets drag these two beauties into the cave and go inside."
Mike and Peter did just that. Inside the cave there was a weapons closet. The two trolls were soon inside that too.
The two Monkees walked down the cave a little further and came upon a tunnel car.
"I guess this is our ride down, Pete." Mike said.
"Wait, Mike," Peter said, "Lets see what's in our knapsacks. Maybe something's in them to help us find Micky and Davy."
So Peter and Mike quickly opened up their sacks and found not only Mrs. Clause's cocoa, but extra clothes and a small hand-held device. It looked similar to the machinery Santa had used to locate Micky and Davy before. Mike read from a small piece of paper that was attached to it.
"Use this to locate your friends in the tunnels. Its a mini-radar detector. Humans will show up as red on the screen. Good luck, Santa."
Mike turned the detector on. It hummed softly and a small screen lit up on one side. It showed two dots to indicate Mike and Peter. Mike smiled and turned it off.
"Hey Mike." Peter said.
Mike turned around but didn't see Peter anywhere.
"Where are you Pete?" Mike said, looking around.
"I'm right in front of you Mike!" Peter said happily.
"Quit playing games, Pete!" Mike said annoyed, "Now come out from hiding!"
To Mike's astonishment, Peter appeared right in front of Mike's eyes! Peter smiled and closed Mike's open mouth.
"I'm wearing an invisibility cloak!" Peter said happily. "When you put the hood up, nobody can see you!"
"Good old Santa thought of everything!" Mike said getting his own cloak out of his sack, "Now we can walk through the tunnels and nobody will see us!" He put on his cloak. "Now lets get below."
Mike and Peter climbed into the tunnel car. Mike released the brake and the car started its journey into the earth.
