Chapter 6

At the castle, Santa led Peter and Mike into a top-secret room that was located in the basement of the palace.

Right by the door, there was an object that looked like a calculator and shown off a blue light.

"Please turn around," Santa asked Peter and Mike, "I know the code, but it's top secret."

Mike and Peter did as Santa told them.

As Santa dialed the numbers, it sounded almost like Jingle bells.  With that, the door opened.

Inside was full of high tech equipment, screen monitors, and all kinds of control buttons.

"Golly, won't you look at this place." said an amazed Peter.

"Is this where you check to see who's naughty or nice?" Mike asked in curiosity.

"Plus, weather and climate in all the parts of the world," Santa replied taking a seat at a screen.  He then began to type something in.

"This can help you find out where your friends are located."

Mike and Peter watched over Santa's shoulder, as a map appeared onto one of the screens.  A large red dot showed up on to the center of the map.

"They've been captured by the evil trolls." Santa said.

"We gotta save Micky and Davy!" cried Peter.

"First we gotta come up with a plan," said Mike.

~~~~~~
Meanwhile, back where the Queen, Glick and the evil trolls were, Davy was tying up Micky, who was sitting uncomfortably on the cold ground, to a pole.
"Davy! What are you doing? Snap out of it!" Micky called to his friend.
"How many times do I have to tell you, I'm not Davy, I'm Davius!" he answered back.
Just then, the queen entered the room.
"Excellent my king," Grizelda told Davius with an evil grin.
"You'll never get away with this!" Micky shouted to the queen.
"How dare you speak to my bride like that!" Davius shouted, pulling the ropes on Micky harder.
"Bride?!"
"That's right, your ex-friend and I are to be married on Christmas eve," Grizelda said with a laugh.
"You can either join us or pay" Davius said.
"Never!" Micky shouted.
"Then," Grizelda said pointing a laser beam right at Micky's face.
Micky wished he knew where the heck his sunglasses were at a time like this.
~~~~~~

Santa, Mike and Peter looked at each other, trying to think of what to do next. Mike was the first to speak.

"Why would the trolls capture them?" He asked, "What would they do with them?"

Santa sighed. He hadn't wanted to get the Monkees involved in his problems, but now he had no choice.

"I've been having problems with the trolls for several months now. You see, I have an agreement with them that they would dig coal for me that I use to put in the naughty children's' stockings. In exchange I would give them diamonds from my diamond mine. I also use coal to run the machinery in the toy factory and to keep my castle warm." Santa stood up and walked over to the window. "But it seems that there are more and more nice children on my list each year and so I need less coal from them."

"And they're not happy about that." Mike said.

Santa nodded. "Trolls are pretty mean by nature, and the fact that there are more good children or 'topsiders' as they call humans who live above ground, that are causing the decreased demand for coal really bothers them."

"But you'll still need coal for your factory and castle, don't you?" Peter asked.

"True, Peter, but-now don't tell anybody this-I've also been looking at cleaner ways to power things, like wind and solar power. Coal creates a lot of air pollution and makes things dirty."

"So maybe the trolls heard the Monkees were going to be performing for you and the elves, so they captured Micky and Davy for revenge." Mike ventured.

"I think Queen Grizelda and her trolls might have something more sinister in mind, Mike." Mrs. Clause said from the doorway. In her hands she held a large leather-bound book. She walked into the room.

"What do you mean, dear?" Santa asked.

"Earlier today I told Davy that he reminded me of someone I had read about many years ago. I didn't tell him who since I didn't want to hurt his feelings. Afterwards I went into the library and found this volume of troll lore and found this story." Mrs. Clause opened up the book and began to read:

Many, many years ago the trolls were ruled by one called Davius. He was taller than most trolls, but shorter than the topsiders. A cruel and evil ruler he was, and soon the entire underworld knew his name. Davius was not content to rule just the trolls; he wanted to rule over all the creatures that lived on top and underneath the earth. So, he traveled to a distant land called Britannia to learn magic from evil topsiders so that he would be even more powerful than before."

"Not a nice dude." Mike whistled.

Mrs. Clause continued, "However, Davius never came back, even though he promised he would return someday." She paused, not wanting to show anybody this, but she had to. "Here is the only known drawing of Davius." Mrs. Clause turned the book around to show Santa, Mike and Peter.

Davius looked exactly like Davy.

"That's Davy!" Peter exclaimed.

"No, that's King Davius, Peter." Santa said, shaking his head, "I understand now. The trolls think Davy is Davius and that he'll lead them to greatness."

"But Davy won't do that!" Mike said.

"Not willingly," Mrs. Clause put in, "But they have Micky too, and they won't hesitate to harm him if they don't get their way."

"Oh, no..." Peter moaned. "Davy is also from Britain, once known as Britannia."

"Mrs. Clause," Mike asked, "Does the book give any clue as to what happened to Davius?"

Mrs. Clause shook her head. "There are other books that insist Davius turned to the side of good but died before he could return home. Still, this doesn't bode well."

Mike turned to Santa. "Santa, could you give us maps of where the trolls have their underground entrances? Perhaps a map of the troll caves themselves?"

"I can easily show you where the entrances are, but as for the troll caves, only the trolls know their way around them."

"You got a plan, Mike?" Peter asked.

"I'm starting to form one, Pete, and I hope it works."
