Chapter 1

It was a normal morning at the pad. Peter was up to his elbows in soap suds. Mike was making scrambled eggs and bacon. Micky was still asleep. Davy however was running around the pad searching for something.

"Hey shot-gun. The table's not going to set it's self." Mike said.

"Sorry." Davy said sticking his hand under the couch. "Found it!"

"Found what?" Mike asked.

"My libarary book." Davy let out a relieved sigh. He entered the kitchen and began to set the table. Peter filled up four glasses with either milk or orange juice.

"Hey Mike. Do you think after breakfast you can give me a lift to the library? I need to drop this book off. It's overdue." Davy said.

"How overdue?" Mike asked.

"A week or...two."

Mike shot him alook.

"Uh-oh. Someone's in trouble." Micky sang as he entered the room.

"Sorry." Davy said.

"And now, Mike gives the young lad a disapproved look." Micky announced.

Mike shot Micky alook.

"Right look. Wrong person." Micky grinned.

"Hey guys. Let's eat." Peter said hoping to lighten the mood.

Mike nodded then glanced at Davy. "I'll give you a lift after breakfast."

"Thanks Mike." Davy smiled.

After breakfast Davy and Peter entered their room to change.

"Hey Pete? Is it ok if I burrow your blue and white buttoned shirt?" Davy asked.

Peter slipped on his orange striped sweatshirt. "Go ahead."

Davy buttoned the shirt. "Now all I need is my socks and shoes...and the book." he groaned. "What'd I do with the bloody thing?!"

Peter smiled as he handed it to him. "You left it on my bed."

Davy again groaned. "Thanks."

Peter grinned.

After Davy and Mike changed the two were about to leave when Mike noticed something. "Um Davy, where's the book?"

"Aw man." Davy groaned. He heard Micky snicker. "What's behind your back?" he demanded.

Micky handed him the book. "Thought I'd hold onto it for ya until you left. You know so you don't lose it again. Which by the way you were about to do. I found it under your bed."

"Thanks." Davy sighed.

Mike and Davy entered the library and after Davy paid his late fee, the two went towards the elevators.

"Which floor my good man?" Davy asked thicking his accent.

"Third." Mike replied trying to sound british.

Davy giggled.

"No good?"

"Sorry mate." Davy said in his normal voice.

"Aww."

As they entered the elevator so did a woman who looked like she was eight months pregant.

"Hello." the woman said.

"Hi." Mike replied. Davy gave her a polite smile.

"Which floor?" Mike asked.

"Second."

He pushed the button when the elevator began to violently shake.

"Earthquake!" Mike cried.

After a few minutes which seemed like hours the shaking finally stopped.

"You okay?" Mike asked Davy.

"Yeah." Davy answered in a shaky voice.

"Ma'am, are you alright?"

"Oh please. Don't be happening now!"

"What's happening now?!" Mike exclaimed.

"I think...I think I'm in labor!"

Mike and Davy gave each other a scared look.

"Oh my...my water just broke."

Mike and Davy looked at each other. "HELP!" they screamed.

The woman layed on the ground and begin to breathe deeply.

"Can't you keep it in alittle longer?" Mike nervously asked. Davy shot him a dirty look.

"No! You don't get to decide when the baby's ready! The baby does and it's ready!" the woman screamed. "You two are going to have to deliver this baby.

"Us?" Mike screeched.

"I...um I helped my grandfather with a horse that was in labor. You're not going to try and kick me in the head are you?" Davy asked.

The woman shook her head.

"We don't even know your name." Mike said.

"It's Cathy." she panted. "What's your names?"

"Um mine's Mike. He's Davy."

"Okay. Davy, can you come by me, and hold my hand. Mike..." she panted. "Mike you're gonna deliver the baby."

"Me?!"

"Come on Mike. She needs our help. Here." Davy took his shirt off and tossed it to Mike. "For when the baby comes out, you can use it to wrap the baby up with it."

"The contractions are...coming closer!" Cathy squeezed Davy's hand really hard. Davy made an "OW!" face.

"This is perfect! I'm in labor and my husband's not here!" she cried.

"You'll be ok. We're here." Davy said softly.

Mike began to really admire Davy. He was being so calm. Meanwhile Mike was a nervous wreak. Still he couldn't leave Davy to do all the work and he felt sorry for Cathy.

"Yeah, we're here." Mike smiled. "Now push."

She did. Then groaned. "I can't do this!"

"Yes, you can. I know it's hard." Mike said.

She shot him an angery look.

"Ok, I don't know. But you can do this. Now push!"

She squeezed Davy's hand tightly. Again Davy winced but wisely kept his mouth shut.

"I think...yeah I can see a head!" Mike grinned.

Cathy smiled. Then pushed again.

"One more should do it! Come on girl!" Mike said.

"That's what I said to the horse." Davy said grinning.

Mike shot him a dirty look. "Come on Cathy. Just one more."

She did and soon the sounds of a crying baby was heard.

"It's a girl!" Mike announced.

Cathy began to cry softly. "Is she ok?"

"Well I've never done this before, but yeah. I think she's ok." Mike said handing the baby to her. "She's beautiful."

Davy gently let go of Cathy and walked by Mike. "You know, for first timers I think we did ok. I hope we do this good when it's our time." Davy smiled.

Mike felt an awkward feeling run through him.

"Um Davy right?" Cathy asked.

"That's right."

"Davy, I don't think you'll be wanting your shirt back." Cathy laughed.

Davy also laughed. "Keep it. I have lots more."

"You two did a great job. Thank you." Cathy smiled.

"You're very welcome." Davy said smiling warmly.

"You two are going to make great fathers someday." Cathy said as she nuzzled up to her baby.

Davy watched the two. His warm smile never faded. Mike however felt an empty feeling run through his body. He glanced at Davy, then Cathy. "So um...do you have picked out a name?"

"Sarah. Sarah Marie." she smiled.

"That's a lovely name." Davy said then gave Mike an "Are you ok?" look.

Soon the elevator begin to move and the doors opened. Cathy's husband rushed towards them.

"Would you like to meet your daughter?" Cathy asked.

The man began to cry. "I can't believe I missed it!"

"Well these two boys did an amazing job." Cathy said. A couple of doctors walked by.

"It was nothing." Davy grinned then whispered to one of the doctors."Can I get an x-ray?"

"Hey, Davy? Where's my shirt?" Peter asked when the two entered.

"I gave it to some lady! You guys'll never guess what happened to us. We delivered a baby! It was amazing! My hand hurts because Cathy was squeezing it so hard." Davy explained not realizing how fast he was talking.

Micky giggled. "Slow down!"

"Sorry." Davy said. Then slowed down some and retold the story.

"You guys did that!" Peter exclaimed. "That's amazing!"

"I know!" Davy grinned.

Mike watched his friends and didn't say a word.

"You know. Someday, I think I'd like to have kids. Fatherhood sounds amazing." Micky smiled.

"I'd love to have a couple of kids." Davy added.

Peter, Davy, and Micky began to share stories about their fathers and childhoods. Mike just listened. He noticed that Davy became quiet and seemed alittle sad. Soon Davy excused himself to get another shirt. After a few minutes Mike entered Davy and Peter's room. He seen Davy sitting on his bed with a sad look in his eyes. He was also wearing a gray t-shirt. Mike sat next to him.

"Thinking about your dad?"

"Yeah. I miss him Mike. I really miss him." Davy said in a slightly cracked voice.

Mike put a comforting arm around Davy's shoulders. "I know. But you'll always have your memories."

Davy seemed to have brightened alittle. "That's true. I do have wonderful memories of him."

You have more than what I have of my dad. Mike thought bitterly.
