Chapter 17

The Monkees went to put on more clothing and wash up while Rose, Elizabeth and Dr. Chronos stayed in the living room.

The two angels changed into human form; Elizabeth once again wore her white dress while Rose wore a similar dress of pale green. Dr. Chronos knelt down by the couch where the two angels were sitting.

"Rose, Elizabeth, thank you for saving me." He said softly, "You could've left me for Satan, but you showed me his evil ways and protected me from his power."

"My job is to help people, Dr. Chronos, not condemn." Elizabeth replied, "When you said the church had killed your wife, I knew then I had to seek her out and find out what happened."

"I told Elizabeth how I died," Rose continued, "And that down deep you were a good person, but led astray by your grief and anger. I asked the Lord's permission to come to Earth with Elizabeth. He sent us back before you committed the sin of murder."

"I swear I will do penance for my sins." Dr. Chronos said to the two angels, "I will spend the rest of my life in the service of God."

Smiling, Rose and Elizabeth stood up and helped Dr. Chronos to his feet. Rose kissed her husband. "I will pray constantly for you Tim." She said, "So that one day you will be with me in Heaven."

Dr. Chronos nodded his head. "We will be together again someday, my San Antonio Rose." He said, kissing her hand.

With a smile, Rose slowly faded from sight. Doctor Chronos sighed.

"I must be going Elizabeth." He said, "I have so much to do, a lot to think about."

"Don't you want to say goodbye to the boys?" Elizabeth asked.

"No...no my dear. It would be too awkward. Tell them I wish them the best, and that I thank them for all they did."

"I will, Dr. Chronos." Elizabeth replied.

"Tim. Call me Tim." The scientist replied, "I've given up science forever."

"Very well, Tim." Elizabeth replied. "I will pray for you too. May God be with you."

"And may you greatly succeed in helping others like you did me." Tim said, kissing Elizabeth's hand. Then, without a backward glance, he left the pad.

A few seconds later, the Monkees came from their bedrooms. They were now wearing jeans and T-shirts, but still had stubble on their faces. Mike looked at the clock on the wall.

"You angels brought us back home only a few hours after we had left...hey, where's Rose and Dr. Chronos?"

Elizabeth filled them in on what happened.

"You think Tim will keep his word?" Peter asked.

"Only God knows, Peter." Elizabeth replied. "Only he can see into the future."

The Monkees and Elizabeth stared at each other for several long seconds. Nobody wanted to say what was on their minds.

"Well, what will you do now, Elizabeth?" Micky finally asked, afraid of the answer.

Elizabeth looked down at her hands. "My work here is done." She replied in a whisper, "I...have to move on."

"Move on? No you can't! Please stay! You can't leave!" The Monkees all said in a jumble of voices.

Elizabeth smiled and raised her hands for quiet.

Micky walked over and took her hands in his, then looked at Mike.

"Get the rope, Mike, we're keepin' her here!" He said with an evil laugh. Mike started to walk away.

"Wait, wait!" Elizabeth said with a laugh, gently pulling her hands free. "Why don't you boys get some sleep and we'll talk about this in the morning?"

"Yeah, and while we sleep, you disappear." Mike said, "Now where's that rope?" He looked around.

"I don't think tying her up would stop her from leaving, Mike." Peter said with a sad smile.

"Boys, I promise I'll still be here in the morning." Elizabeth said, holding up her right hand. She walked over and touched each of the Monkees on their foreheads. "Now get to bed."

"Where will you sleep?" Davy asked.

Immediately, all four Monkees offered the angel the use of their beds. Elizabeth declined.

"I'll be fine, right out here." She smiled, "Now shoo!"

The Monkees said goodnight, then went into their bedrooms. After changing into their pajamas, they climbed into bed and thanks to Elizabeth's touch, fell into a deep, restful sleep.

Elizabeth sighed as she watched the Monkees go into their bedrooms. When she sensed they were asleep, she waved her hand and turned off all the lights. Next she made a lit candle appear in her hand and placed it on the floor in the middle of the living room. Finally, the angel knelt down in front of the candle, folded her hands together, and spent the rest of the night in prayer.

The guys woke from a deep, pleasant sleep from the smell of bacon frying. They quickly washed, shaved and dressed and hurried down into the kitchen. There they found Elizabeth frying bacon in a large pan. She was now dressed in cut-off jeans and a blue and white top. Elizabeth looked up as the Monkees came in.

"Good Morning, guys!" Elizabeth said happily, though her eyes looked sad. "Sleep well?"

"Best sleep I've had in a long time." Micky replied. The other three nodded in agreement.

"I know you boys are hungry like I am, since its been over nineteen hundred years since we last ate." She joked.

The Monkees laughed at that. Soon, the bacon was done, along with the eggs and toast. After the blessing, the five of them quickly began to eat. Nobody said anything while they were eating, but Micky kept glancing over at Elizabeth every so often.

Elizabeth got up after they ate and began to clear the table. Peter got up too and helped her. Micky, Mike and Davy left the table and went into the living room. They all looked at each other and were thinking the same thing; Elizabeth was going to leave them soon.

Elizabeth and Peter quickly washed the dishes and put them away.

Then they walked into the living room. Micky, Mike and Davy stood up as she came over.

"Well, boys..." The angel began, "I'm sorry, but..."

"Please reconsider." Peter begged. "What if Satan comes looking for us?"

"As long as you four avoid sin, even the near occasion of sin, Satan will have no power over you." Elizabeth replied, looking at Peter sadly. "It's not my decision to leave. It's time for me to move on."

"Where?" Davy asked.

"I don't know, wherever I'm sent. I follow God's will." Elizabeth walked over and gave Davy a hug and kiss.

"Goodbye Davy. I'll miss you."

Davy started to cry. "I'll miss you too, Elizabeth."

The angel walked over to Mike and gave him a hug and kiss. "Goodbye, Mike. I'll miss you too."

Mike tried to hold back his tears, but couldn't. "Take care of yourself, Elizabeth." He choked.

Elizabeth came over to Peter. He began to sob and gave her a huge hug. "You'll always be special to me, Elizabeth." Peter finally managed to say.

"And you as well, sweet Peter." Elizabeth replied, a tear starting to fall down her cheek. She kissed his cheek, then walked over to Micky, who was looking down at the floor.

As Elizabeth approached, Micky looked up, determination in his face.

He took Elizabeth's hand. "Come with me." He said, and led her outside and onto the balcony. There, he picked up a beach blanket lying on the railing and continued to lead Elizabeth down the steps and onto the beach. The two of them kicked off their sandals and walked hand in hand, carrying their sandals. They walked along the beach for a few minutes, until Micky was sure they couldn't be spotted from the pad. He found a secluded area by some rocks. Only then did he let go of Elizabeth's hand and spread out the beach blanket. Micky sat down and gently pulled Elizabeth down to him.

Neither of them spoke as they watched the waves crash against the shore. Finally, Micky looked over at Elizabeth and cupped her face in his hands.

"Elizabeth, please don't leave." Micky said. He took a deep breath. "I love you. We can work something out."

The angel began to sob. Micky put his arms around her and held her as she wept, her tears soaking his T-shirt. He murmured words of comfort to her as he himself cried. After a long time, she was able to look up at Micky.

"I love you too, Micky." She cried, "But I must continue on my mission."

"Why?" Micky demanded angrily. "Why must you still roam the Earth for so long? Can't God cut you a break after all we did for him?"

"I spent last night in prayer, begging the Holy Father to let me stay where I am. I felt his love, but he never answered me." The angel replied. "Remember the night before as we looked up at the full moon? She asked.

Micky nodded his head.

"When the moon is full, think of me and I'll be with you. Now before I leave, let me have one last kiss." She said.

Micky engulfed Elizabeth's mouth with his, wishing the kiss would never end. Finally, Elizabeth pulled away and looked in Micky's eyes.

"Goodbye, Micky my love." She whispered, "I'll always love you."

With that, The angel began to fade from Micky's sight.

"No, NO!" Micky shouted, futilely clutching at empty air, "Don't go, Elizabeth, don't go!"

But the angel disappeared, her face the last thing to vanish.

"NOOO!" Micky shouted at the heavens. He brought his knees up to his chest, wrapped his arms around his knees and cried.

Mike, Peter and Davy found Micky in that same position, still crying, several hours later. Mike and Peter helped Micky stand up and slowly walked him back to the pad. Davy picked up the beach blanket and shook the sand off of it. Then he picked up Micky's sandals and followed his band mates back home.
