Chapter 5

The Monkees and Elizabeth followed Dr. Chronos and his men as they followed everyone else into Jerusalem. Micky held Elizabeth gently in his arms and once again the angel fell asleep. Mike looked over at Micky.

"You want me to carry her for awhile, Mick?" He asked.

"No, that's ok, Mike." Micky answered quietly. "She hardly weighs anything." He then softly kissed Elizabeth on the head. Mike looked at Micky for a second longer, then turned away. It was obvious Micky was developing feelings much deeper than friendship with the angel.

It wasn't long, even at that late hour, before word got out that the Jewish authorities had arrested the prophet Jesus. A small crowd began to follow the soldiers as they took Jesus over to the house of the high priest, Caiaphas. The crowd made it harder for the Monkees to see where Dr. Chronos and his men were, but it also helped keep them hidden as well.

The soldiers finally went inside a wooden gate, dragging Jesus along with them. The gate shut and the crowd was left to mill around outside, wondering what was going to happen next.

Simon Peter and the other disciple went over to the gate. The other disciple with Simon Peter spoke to the girl watching the gate and she let the two of them inside. After about a minute, Dr. Chronos, Henry and Ian also went over to the girl watching the gate. Dr. Chronos pressed what looked like a bag of coins into the girl's hand. She smiled and let them inside as well.

"Just great!" Mike whispered. "We gotta get in there."

"How?" Micky asked. "Elizabeth's out for the count and we don't have any money."

Davy eyed the young girl at the gate, who was counting the money in the bag Dr. Chronos gave her. He smiled at the others.

"Leave it to me Fellas." Davy said slyly. He started to walk over to her, when Mike took his arm.

"Remember Davy, you can speak Hebrew now."

Davy rolled his eyes. "Yes, papa Nez."

Davy walked over to the girl by the gate. He flashed her his most charming smile and spoke quietly to her. After a few seconds, the girl smiled and nodded her head. Davy leaned over and gave her a kiss on the cheek and motioned for the others to come over. The girl opened the gate for them and let them in. The Monkees thanked her and went inside.

"What did you say to her, Davy?" Peter asked.

"I told her that we were travelers needing a place to rest and could a beautiful girl like her let us inside?" Davy said.

"Davy Jones, ladies man in two languages and eras." Micky said with a small laugh.

The Monkees and Elizabeth found themselves in a large courtyard.

There were three charcoal fires burning brightly, trying to stave away the cold night air. Around one fire were several soldiers, talking about how easy it was to arrest Jesus. The other two fires had several civilians around them, including Simon

Peter, who kept his cloak drawn around his face, as if afraid someone would recognize him. The other disciple that was with him was quietly talking to some people standing against the wall.

However, there were no signs of Dr. Chronos and his two henchmen. The Monkees sat down around the fire opposite where Simon Peter was sitting. Micky leaned Elizabeth against his chest. A man pointed over to her.

"What's wrong with her?" He asked.

"My wife and I and our friends are travelers and she's very tired from our journey." Micky answered in Hebrew.

Mike, Peter and Davy looked at each other at that. 'Wife'? was the unspoken question in their faces, but they said nothing to Micky.

The four Monkees leaned close to each other so they could talk privately.

"We need to go into the house and look for Dr. Chronos." Davy said in a whisper.

"Yeah, that's for sure." Mike replied. "Micky, why don't you and Peter sneak inside and look around, while Davy and I keep an eye on things here?" Mike said this to keep Micky focused on the task at hand. He was getting worried that Micky was focusing too much attention on Elizabeth.

"But Mike..." Micky began.

"Don't worry. We'll watch her." Mike put in.

Micky flashed Mike an annoyed look, then gently placed Elizabeth's head on Mike's lap. Then he and Peter silently crept over to a side door of the house. Fortunately, everybody was talking about the night's events that nobody paid attention to them.

Micky pushed open the door and he and Peter went inside. They found themselves inside a corridor that led around to the main hall of the house. As they walked closer to the main hall, they began to hear loud, angry shouts.

"I heard this man say 'I will destroy this temple made with hands and within three days I will build another not made with hands!" A voice cried out.

Micky and Peter looked at each other. Obviously, Jesus' trial before the Jewish Priests was going on. Suddenly an angry voice shouted at them:

"Who are you two? What are you doing here?"

Micky and Peter spun around to see a servant glaring at them.

"We...we're the new servants that were hired today." Micky said quickly. Peter nodded in agreement.

"I don't remember Caiaphas hiring any servants recently," the man remarked sharply, "But then again, I'm just the head steward, so why tell me?" He said sarcastically. "Your first job, then, is to go down into the wine cellar and find out what's keeping those other two servants. The priests are calling for wine, and they don't like to be kept waiting."

Micky and Peter looked at each other. The missing servants didn't sound too good....

"What are waiting for?" The steward asked "GO! The wine cellar is down at the end of this hallway."

"Yes sir, right away sir!" Micky and Peter said, and then ran down the hall and opened the wine cellar door.

Moving very quietly, the two Monkees walked down the stone steps.

They soon heard noises at the bottom of the steps.

Very slowly, they peeked around the corner at the bottom of the steps.....

And saw Dr. Chronos and his two henchmen putting something into the wine jars......
