Mike and Lily were so excited about their plan, they ran straight down to the village to share with their friends. Mike tried like everything to make Shatzu understand that he was getting married. He even pointed to his ring finger and took Lily by the hand to symbolize unity. Little did Mike and Lily know, the tribe had no idea what marriage was. Their custom consisted of finding a woman to bring back to the hut. That meant they were spoken for. Their rituals had nothing to do with love, but which woman was the strongest and healthiest. Of course, the men respected their wives and did learn to love them.
Lily had an idea to make them understand. She had noticed on several occassions that some of the women had a big hoop earring in their right ear, but some didn't. After thinking about it awhile, all the women with a mate had an earring and those without didn't. She pointed to Miha's earring and then pointed to her own ear. This caused her to smile as she hugged Mike and Lily tightly.
The ceremony was the very next day. Mike had Shatzu help him as he tried to get rid of his beard. His face stung from not having any shaving cream or a small razor, but at least he looked better he had to admit. Mike also gathered his long hair and tied it back with a piece of sturdy vine. He even dug out his grey trousers and tattered eight button blue shirt, which had been used for everything from a towel to a fishing net.
As Lily came from Kiki's hut, she carried a bouquet of beautiful island flowers. She had flowers and jewels braided into her hair as well. Though her dress was torn, stained, and faded, Mike thought she was lovelier than ever.
As the two met in the center of the village, they joined hands and Mike began with his vows.
"Lily, I take you for my wife. I promise to always love you, cherish you, protect you and provide for you, no matter where we are. I can't give you all the things you were use to having, but I'll do the very best I can. This I vow before God."
"Mike, I take you for my husband. I promise to always love you, cherish you, and always try to put your needs above my own. Whether we stay here forever or not, I will try to always be content with the life we have together. This I vow before God."
Mike then began to sing a song that his friend Davy usually sang.
It sort of made him sad to suddenly think of Davy. He wished his
friends could be here for this day.
I wanted you from the first day I saw you.
The first day I looked into your eyes.
That's when I knew that I would adore you.
It was no surprise.
We were made for each other
As the stars were made for the sky.
We were made for each other
No other love have I.
You took my hand. Was it then you had known it?
Was that when you started loving me?
Was it the way I smiled that had shown it?
Was that the day you could see?
We were made for each other
As the stars were made for the sky.
We were made for each other
No other love have I.
After the song, Mike and Lily shared a kiss. This was followed by
the tribe dancing around them joyfully. They didn't know what to
expect since they had never witnessed a wedding. They were very
pleased to be a part of Mike and Lily's special event. The couple
then shared a meal with Shatzu and Miha's family.
That night as the couple went back home, they happened to walk past Lily's hut. They stopped for a moment and smiled. Then Mike swooped her up in his arms and carried her to his hut, which would be their home.
