Chapter 10

A whole month had past since Mike and Lily's disappearance. Each day, the Monkees and the Vanguards secretly hoped they would receive news that the two castaways had been found somewhere and were safe, just tired and hungry. No such thing happened. Davy, Micky, and Peter all went through counseling and it proved to be very effective for Davy and Micky. Peter, however, could never get the image of Mike falling off the side of the ship out of his mind. He spent many nights, waking up in a cold sweat, after having nightmares of Mike screaming for help. In a way, he was glad he hadn't actually witnessed the event. It was probably a lot more horrible than he even imagined. Davy slowly dealt with his denial. Even though he had told Micky he knew Mike was really dead, his mind could never grasp it. Once he got through his denial and anger, acceptance came. After crying for several days, Davy began to deal with the loss of his friend.

On the island though, Mike was alive and well. Things had been different between Mike and Lily ever since the pineapple incident. Since all they had were each other, they became good friends and talked about everything they could think of: what they missed about their civilized life, the first thing they would do when they got back home, and food was always a topic of conversation. Being that they only had mangos and fish to eat, Mike said he would eat a whole side of beef by himself if he ever got back to the states. Of course, they didn't always have time to sit and talk. Lily would be out picking Mangos, or flowers and looking to see if there were other forms of edible plants on the island. Mike would be busy trying to catch fish, building a fire, or finding sticks for the fire. He also spent much time searching the lagoon to see if anything of use had washed up on shore. Lily showed Mike the waterfall she had found and told him it could be used like a shower. The first thing Mike did though was taste the cold water from the stream. It was cold and as pure as could be. He vowed right then to never drink from the ocean again.

At nightfall, Mike and Lily would sit by the fire and huddle together to keep warm. Though it was a tropical island and was very warm in the daytime, at night it would be rather chilly, especially without blankets. Sometimes while talking, Lily would get sleepy. Then Mike would offer his lap as a pillow for her head. As she lay there, Mike would stroke her hair as if she were a puppy. When she was asleep, Mike would gently get up. He'd slip off his shirt and lay it across Lily's shoulders. He'd stand there and look at her for hours, eventually going off somewhere nearby to sleep himself.

It seems as if they didn't have a care in the world until the day Lily was kidnapped. It started like any other day with Mike doing his chores and Lily doing hers. Lily had been picking some flowers and quietly singing a tune from the opera "Carmen". She stopped suddenly as she heard rustling in the bushes.

"Who's there?" She demanded. No one answered. Instead, a man with tan skin and wearing nothing but a boar skin loin cloth jumped out in front of her. The sight of him made Lily drop her flowers and scream. She was too frighten to run. The man, who also had bushy hair and a peg through his nose, picked Lily up and walked off with her deep into the jungle.

Mike heard the scream and immediately dropped his load of twigs to run after the sound of her constant cry for help. When he reached her usually spot for picking flowers and didn't see her, he became worried beyond believe. He just kept running in the direction of her voice as he yelled,"Hang on Lily. I'm coming!"

The course he ran led him all the way to what looked like a village. There he saw huts, fires, kettles boiling, and naked women, children and men. In the middle of it all was poor Lily on her hands and knees begging.

"Please, oh please Mr. savage, I beg you don't sacrifice me to your gods!" She cried earnestly. Though he knew Lily was scared, Mike tried hard to hide a grin as he watched the scene of Lily begging and the native people looking at her as if she were crazy. Finally, Mike came into view to see what these people wanted.

"Lily, are you ok?" Mike asked as he took Lily into his arms.

"Mike, they're going to kill us," Lily said very seriously through her tears.

"What do you want?" Mike asked as he held Lily close. No one answered. Obviously, they didn't understand what he was saying.

Suddenly, the native who had kidnapped Lily, stepped forward as he grabbed a knife and pointed it in Mike's direction.
