Chapter 8

Several days had past since Lillian and Michael went missing. The Coast Guard diligently searched the Pacific Ocean, but only went out about a few thousand feet, claiming the two never could have survived any farther in such a violent storm and such icy water. Even though it was July, being in the depths of the Pacific, especially at night, made the water like ice. When sent down in the depths of the ocean, the Coast Guard came across Lillian's diamond bracelet, but there were no other signs of her or Mike. Micky insisted that the Coast Guard were searching in the wrong place, having no idea that the longitude and latitude of their location had been recorded in the ship's scanner. The Vanguards, of course, were out of their minds with grief when all that was recovered was Lillian's bracelet. Derreck was beside himself with guilt, as he sat in a jail cell awaiting his trial. He never realized what an overbearing jerk he was to Lillian, but now it had cost him his job and his fiancee's life.

After the shock had settled in, the Monkees put together a memorial service for Mike. Davy sang "The Lord's Prayer" and completely lost it halfway through; Micky, fighting with his tears, took ten minutes to deliver the two minute ulogy; and Peter, who began to play "In The Garden" on Mike's favorite acoustic guitar, couldn't finish for being blinded with tears. Worst of all, was Mike's dear mother, who practically had to be carried to her seat. She was so grief stricken she could hardly stand. After the service was over, many friends of Mike, and of the guys as well, filed out as they embraced each one of the Monkees. The last to leave was Mr. Babbit.

"Hey boys, um, I'm really sorry you know, about," Mr. Babbit said, not being able to finish.

"Thank you Mr. Babbit," Peter said as he hugged Mr. Babbit as hard as he could. As soon as Mr. Babbit returned the hug, Peter shook, as the tears poured down his face. Davy and Micky looked at Peter crying and began to cry again themselves. Suddenly, Davy pulled away and wiped his eyes.

"They're not dead. They can't be," Davy said.

"Davy, the Coast Guard hasn't been able to find them anywhere. Don't do this now. Once the shock wears off we'll go get some counseling. I'll go with you," Micky said as he placed a hand on his friend's shoulder. Davy pushed it off.

"NO, the fact that they haven't found them proves that they could still be alive. I'm not giving up hope. You and Peter can if you want to, but not me," Davy said.

"Davy please keep your voice down. Mike's mom doesn't need to hear this. It will only upset her," Micky said calmly.

"you're right. I'm sorry, but I can't buy that Mike's really gone. It's too weird. It's just not right," Davy said as the tears came once again.

"I know Davy, I know," Micky said as he held his heartbroken friend.
