Chapter 1

Kait sat daydreaming in her afternoon biology lecture class. As her classmates frantically took notes to keep pace with the professor, her mind was focused on her new boyfriend, Liu.

They met only a mere three weeks ago and she was feeling all the highs associated with new love. She couldn't wait to get home to phone him as she had not spoken with him since the morning and she missed him horribly.

Her daydream came to an abrupt halt when the professor said "Quiz Tomorrow".

"QUIZ?!!" Kait gasped as she sat up and looked around. "When?" she asked the student next to her.

"Tomorrow. Didn't you hear the professor?" she replied.

"Actually, I didn't" Kait said sheepishly with a gazed look that she tried to hide.

At the precinct, Liu was interrogating a murder suspect. He tried to break the man down, but his suspect was tougher than he anticipated. Liu's diminutive stature was in sharp contrast to his tenacity. He had nervous habit of "over chewing" his gum and could sometimes be abrupt in his approach with people outside of work. His ever increasing caseload was adding to his stress.

Up until he met Kait, it wasn't uncommon for him to go to the local bar for a beer. Now, most of his leisure time was spent with her. Although he wasn't nearly as distracted with her as she was with him, he found himself looking forward to her company again.

Kait and Peter had been friends since early childhood. Peter was the brother that Kait never had. When she met Liu, Peter was the first to know. He knew his friend fell hard. Maybe too hard too quickly. Peter cautioned her to ease her emotions and take things at a slower pace.

It was already too late. She was in love. There was only one tiny issue that needed to be addressed: Liu had never met Kait's parents. Kait didn't quite know how to tell them about the man 14 years her senior from a different cultural backround was now the love of her life. Liu, who had more "life experience" than Kait knew this was going to be an uphill battle. One that he was most certainly ready for...
