"It looks like the little grease monkey can wear a skirt. Ooo, and look, she even has on make-up!!" Diane smirked.
The Monkees and Buddy looked up to see Diane twisting the grape soda dangerously in her hand.
Mike stood and started to speak. "Now look, Diane," he started, but Buddy stood in front of him and stopped him.
"No, Mike. Please let me. You can have your say after me, OK?" Buddy said, and then she turned to Diane. "You know, Diane, you can make fun of me all you like. I know it's just a cover-up for your own sorry self! I have to admit, at first, you made me feel bad. But then, I thought about you and how sad your life must be. Yeah, I like to work on cars and I've met some good friends. People who care about me. Too bad I can't say the same for you and your sad groupies! So, Diane, give it your best shot. It only shows just how sad and desperate you are."
Without taking her eyes off Diane, Buddy stepped back beside Mike and said softly "OK ,Mike she's yours."
The Monkees, as well as the crowd that had gathered, were stunned at Buddy's words.
"Well yeah! What she said!" was all Mike could manage.
"Why you little---," Diane hissed as she drew back her hand with the grape soda, preparing to throw it at Buddy, but she was stopped. Someone caught her hand.
"The young lady is right. You cannot use this club as your personal playground where you can play bully. When I got out of the Army, I wanted a place where you kids could have fun. Believe me; I've seen what Bullies can do." It was Mr. Thomas, the owner of the club, who held Diane's hand. "Now, get out of here and don't come back until you change your attitudes!"
"B-but Uncle Ray!" Diane begged. The Monkees, Buddy and the crowd mouthed "Uncle Ray?"
Mr. Thomas gave the crowd a sympathetic look. "Ya can't pick your family," he explained. "Now move it young lady and take your henchmen with ya!!" He was using his army voice and Diane and her group made a hasty retreat to the door.
"Well, this is a dance, so dance and have a good time!!" Mr. Thomas ordered, and then went back into his office.
The Monkees went back on stage for their second set. The last song they sang was "Sunny Girlfriend," with Mike in the lead. He looked at Buddy, and winked, causing her to blush and smile. When Mike returned to the table, he complimented Buddy again on what she had done.
"Bud didn't know ya had it in ya!" Mike smiled.
"Thanks," Buddy smiled back.
"Say Buddy, I could still use some more help with the Monkeemobile tomorrow," Mike hinted.
"Sure, but don't expect me to help you dressed like this," Buddy smiled.
"Aw, shucks!" Mike faked disappointment as Buddy elbowed him. "It's really not all about the dress. It's about you. So will you go out on a date with me?"
"Maybe," Buddy teased. Mike tickled her side and Buddy quickly agreed.
"Ok, OK, You talked me into it!" she laughed.
"Gee, and I thought he tickled her into it!" Peter absently said.
"Well guys, our little girl's got her first big date!! They grow so fast!!? Micky sniffled, pretending to cry.
So, Davy, Micky, and especially Peter were very happy for Mike and Buddy. Peter was right, all they needed was a little push in the forms of three fairy-god friends and a little Monkee Magic!!
