Chapter 7

“Petra, just what is it you do that annoys Micky?” Ron asked.

Petra looked at Micky and said,” When I sing off-key...on purpose!”

“Oh, Petra! Micky said when you try to play his drums!” Ron answered. (the audience snickers).

“Try ta---“once again before Petra could finish her sentence, she was hit with another pie.

“Oooooh,” Ron said pretending to feel the hurt. “Hey, are you guys sure you are a couple?”

“Uh, yeah. She’s—she’s just a little nervous,” Micky offered.

The audience howled as Petra accepted her second towel, but only wiped her eyes as she looked at Micky. Micky nervously laughed and shrugged.

Back at the Pad:

“Yeah they’re a couple alright. A couple of completely insane people,” Mike sighed.

“Ey! Didja see the look on ‘er face when that pie smashed ‘er?” Davy asked.

“Stick around. The expression on her face after this fiasco Mick’s gotten her into will be priceless,” Peter answered.

Back at the Studio:

The production assistant gave the countdown. Micky and Petra had not said a word to each other during the entire break. In fact, Micky moved just a bit away from her. He thought he saw steam coming out of her ears. Once again, they were back on the air.

“OK guys, last question before we begin our second half. Girls, what is it your guy does that annoys you the most?” Ron asked. “Let’s start with Cassie.”

“Belch! It’s disgusting!” Cassie answered.

“James said (James holds up his card) “belch.”

Good going! (the audience applauds) “Paula?” Ron asked.

“That’s easy! When her cracks his knuckles,” Paula answered confidently.

“That’s what he said!” Ron said smiling. (the audience applauds) “Lea?”

“When he crunches his apples! Ooh! It’s awful,” Lea said.

“Correct! Loud eater, eh Lea?” Ron asked. Now it was Petra’s turn. (the audience laughs) “Petra, your turn, honey.”

“When I hide his drumsticks,” Petra weakly answered. (the audience gasps)

“Oh, Petra! Micky said when he puts orange juice on his cereal.”

“Orange juice? Mic---” And for the third time Petra and the cream pie made a face-to-face connection. (the audience laughs)

“That’s the first half of our show. We’ll be back after these words from our sponsors. Then we’ll see how the girls will do,” Ron said looking into the camera trying to keep a straight face. As the show faded into commercial, they put a close up on Micky and Petra. The audience laughed even harder.

Back at the Pad:

“Well, maybe Petra will pull this thing off.” Davy mused.

“What she’ll pull off is a fit when they get off the show,” Peter answered.

“Ah, just look at ‘em. America’s fave-o-rite couple,” Mike chuckled.

What would the second half of the show bring?
