Chapter 6

“Uh, she, uh—well I play drums in a band, so I’ll say when she tries to play my drums,” Micky managed.

“Is she any good?” Ron asked.

“No, it’s just a loud racket, " Micky smiled. (audience laughs)

Back at the Pad:

“Uh-oh! Micky’s in trouble now!” Peter said shaking his head.

“Tha’ girl can play just as well as Micky!” Davy said.

“Why didn’t he say tambourine?” Mike mused. “Yeah—he—Hey!!” Davy yelled.

Back at the studio:

“Last of the three questions guys. What annoying habit of yours would your girl say drives her crazy? Dean?”

“Without a doubt eating apples really loud. The crunchy sound just drives her mad!” Dean proudly answered. (audience chuckles)

“Alright. Joey?”

“I crack my knuckles and it really gets under her skin,” Joey answered. Then he cracked his knuckles to demonstrate. (audience—Ew!)

“Movin’ on, what about you James?”

“When I belch,” James answered.

“Belch?” Ron asked.

“Yeah. Wanna hear?” James offered.

“Oh, no, no. I think we’ll pass,” Ron answered. (audience laughs) “What about you, Micky?”

“When I pour orange juice over my cereal instead of milk,” Micky answered a bit confidently. Petra would get this for sure, he thought.

“You don’t like milk?” Ron asked. “Naw. Orange juice is much better. You should try it,” Micky said.

“Ah, I think I’ll pass on that also,” Ron answered. (audience laughs)

Then Ron looked into the camera:

“That’s it for the first half of our show. We’ll be back after a word from our sponsors.”

By the time the show came back, the girls were seated next to their boyfriends.

Petra looked nervously at Micky and Micky smiled back weakly at her. It seemed their only hope was that Petra would use her ability to “just know” things so that they could at least get on the scoreboard.

The producer gave the countdown. They were back on the air.

“Welcome back to “Cupid’s Couples,” folks. As you can see, the girls have rejoined us. Alright girls, we have asked your guys three questions. Each question is worth ten points,” Ron announced. “But wait, we have a surprise. Girls, you see that box in front of you? (the girls nod yes) A wrong answer and fellas, the girls are hit in the face with a cream pie. Bring out those slickers for the girls, Linda.”

Linda gave each girl a slicker to protect their clothes. Petra looked at Micky and shook her head. This was going to be interesting.

. . . .

Faintly, Petra heard the first question. The other three girls got the question right. Now, it was her turn.

“Uh, Petra, we need an answer,” Ron smiled.

“Oh, I—I’m sorry. Could you repeat the question?” Petra asked.

“Sure. What was your worst date with Micky?”

“When....when he took me for a ride and it started to rain and we couldn’t get the top up so we were soaking wet,” Petra hurriedly said. (the audience groans)

“I’m sorry Petra. Micky said it was when he leaped into a wall trying to impress you with ballet,” Ron said.

“Bal—” but before Petra could finish, a pie sprang from the box and smacked her in the face. (the audience laughs wildly)

“I guess you forgot, honey,” Micky stammered. If it weren’t for the awful predicament they were in, he would have laughed at Petra’s reaction to the pie, too.

“Yes, honey (emphasis on honey), I guess I did,” Petra answered accepting a towel to clear away the pie remains.

“OK guys. Let’s move on to the next question,” Ron said trying to regain his composure.

Again, Petra sat as though she were in a trance. Again, it was her turn. What was the one thing that Micky did that annoyed her most besides getting her into this mess?
