Chapter 3

(Davy walked into the pad just as Micky and Peter were finishing decorating…)

Davy: Oh for me..? You shouldn't have! (Davy went to sit down at the table and just as he reached for the food, Micky smacked his hand) Ow! What'd ya do that for?

Micky: Not yours! It's Mike's.

*Mike's Voice*: Can I come out now?

Micky (Yelling back): No! Not yet! (To Davy) Did you know that Mike is married?

Davy: He's what..?

Micky: He's married. Y'know hitched?

Peter: Yeah, he even got himself a wife. (Micky lightly hit Peter on the head) Ow! Quit it or I'm telling!

Micky: Oh brother! (To Davy) Anyway, Mike is married. Her name is Phyllis and she is beautiful and….(Micky explained everything to Davy) ….so I thought we would try and help them work this out.

Davy: But if we do that, we won't be The Monkees anymore.

Micky: Sure we will. It'll just be The Monkees Minus One.

Davy (Sighing): Oh all right.

(The three guys go over to Mike's door and knock on it…)

*Mike's Voice: Go away!*

Micky (Opening the door): Sorry, no can do buddy. *You* have a date tonight.

Mike: A what..?

Peter: A date. Y'know, like today is December 26th.

Mike: Ha, ha, ha!

Micky: C'mon! Up on your feet! (Micky pulled Mike up from his bed and made him walk over to the mirror) When you look into that mirror, what do you see?

Mike: Peter's head.

Micky: C'mon Mike! This is serious.

Mike (Sighing): Oh all right! (Mike found it hard to look in the mirror) I can't do this Mick.

Micky: How come? Why can't you look into the mirror for me? (Mike didn't say anything) Mike?

Mike (Sitting back down on his bed and sighing): When I was a little boy, all my parents ever did was fight. They fought so much that I would get scared and run to my room. And my dad was no picnic to live with. He hated me. He hated that my mother had me and he wanted nothing to do with me most of the time.

Davy: That can't be true Michael. He *had* to of loved you. You were his son.

Mike: It might have been like that for you, man, but not me. My dad was a hard man to live with. He would tell me I was stupid; that I would never make it in life because I was stupid. He told me that so much that I believed him.

Micky: Stupid..? You are *far* from being stupid man. I envy you at times.

Mike: How could you envy me? You've only known me for half a year.

Micky: And *in* that half a year, I learned a lot from you. When we formed this group, I didn't know how to play the drums. You gave me the sticks and told me that it was in my mind that I couldn't play. And if I had kept it in my mind, I would never learn. And because of what you said, I sat down to those drums out there and now look at me. I'm a pro.

Davy: Oh is that what you call it? I thought it was noise banging in me ears all this time. (They laugh)

Micky: The point is, Mike, you are no where *near* stupid. And you have a beautiful wife who loves you very much. You know how I know she loves you? She came all the way here looking for you.

Mike: She was only looking for me to get me to sign divorce papers. Phyllis doesn't love me.

Micky: Mike, do you think that she would have come here looking for you? And do you think it was an accident that she was going to be living in the same complex as us? I don't think so.

Mike: What about this new man in her life?

Micky: Do you seriously think there *is* another man? I think she made it up so that you would get jealous and stop this little charade of a divorce from happening. I think she was out to test you.

Mike: Then why did it take her a whole year to come after me?

Micky: Maybe because she thought *you* would go after her?

Mike: You really don't think I'm stupid?

Micky: Look in that mirror! (It was hard but Mike got up from the bed again and faced the mirror. He looked at it and saw himself standing in it)

Mike: What am I looking at?

Micky: You tell us. What do you see in yourself?

Mike (Hesitating): I see a man whose life is very short.

Davy: Hey, I can't help it if I'm short.

Micky: He didn't mean you! Mike take me seriously for once would ya? I'm trying to help you.

Mike (Sighing): Okay; I see an under acheiver who will never be anything because he has no where to go.

Micky: Wanna know what *I* see? (Mike looked at Micky) I see Michael Nesmith; a man who is multi-talented like Peter is, who has the many qualities in his personality as little ol' Davy here and someone who cares when he wants to. I know you don't think much of yourself, but Mike you are an extrodinary man who just needs a little boost of self esteem. Block out whatever it was your dad told you growing up and start thinking positivly. Start saying to yourself that you *are* worth something and that you *are* loved by that woman out there. (Micky opened the door a bit more so that Mike could see his wife standing there – she had just come in the door with Amber. Mike caught a glimpse of Phyllis who was now beautifully decked out in a blue dress with her hair hanging down over her shoulders. They saw a smile come to his face) There's a smile! Mike, I think it's time to go get her!

Mike: But what about *you* guys?

Micky: We'll make it somehow; don't worry about us one little bit ok? (Mike smiled at Micky) Go on! (Mike walked out the bedroom door and stood smiling at his wife)

Mike (Nervous): You look…you look absolutely stunning.

Phyllis (Hiding her laugh): I kind of feel funny though.

Mike: Would you like to join me at the table?

Phyllis (Smiling): Yeah I think so. (Mike held out his hand. Phyllis didn't hesitate. She took Mike's hand and he led her to the table)

*Davy (Whispering to everyone): So what do we do now that Mike's gone?*

*Micky: He's not gone Davy. He's just finding a new Mike is all. C'mon! Let's let them be.*

*Davy: What about Amber?*

*Micky: C'mon! I'll buy you all a burger.* (They slipped out so that Mike and Phyllis could be alone – taking Amber with them)

Mike: Jeannie, I'm sorry. I never should have left you.

Phyllis: And I never should have had that fight with you over what to do with Christopher's room and about how our mothers kept interfearing in everything we did.

Mike: What do you say that we start over?

Phyllis: I'd like that.

Mike: Me too. (They laughed and she hid her smile again) I missed the way you hide your smile when you laugh. (There was more of a pause) Jeannie, the real reason I left is `cuz I got scared. I got scared that I couldn't be a dad to Christopher `cuz my dad was never good to me. I didn't wanna turn out like him. I thought I had to be tough and…well I'm just sorry is all. I wanna make this right. I want you to bring Christopher here to live with us.

Phyllis: Us..? I hope you don't mean those three guys you live with.

Mike: What's wrong with them?

Phyllis: Nothing. They are very sweet guys to do this for us. But I kind of want to be with just you; know what I mean?

Mike: What if…what if we take that apartment you rented? This way I'll be right here with the guys for gigs and such and Christopher will always have a baby-sitter of some kind; Peter is *great* with kids.

Phyllis: Well…I'm not sure I would like living here in L.A. but if it's what you really want then it's okay with me.

Mike: Just do me a favor? (She looked at him) Keep your mom outta the way.

Phyllis: I will if you'll keep your mom out too.

Mike: It's a deal.

Phyllis: Is this the part where you whisk me away off my feet and kiss me under the missletoe?

Mike: No. It's the part where I do this. (Mike picked her up from the chair, walked her to the door and over to her apartment. Phyllis is laughing the whole time. They went inside the apartment and, well, you can just use your imagination for the rest)
