Chapter 1

1954-England

A small boy with short brown hair, navy blue trousers, a small blue sports jacket, and a gray, wool cap walked up the wet, stone walk way. He carried a metal pail in his hand that contained his lunch for the day. The boy wasn't watching where he was going when he bumped into a boy twice his size.

"What you think ya doin'?" the boy said with his English accent, looking down at the boy.

"I-I'm sohhy. Wasn't lookin'. Won't do it again." The little boy said, looking scared as he backed away from him.

"George, what ah you doin'?" a girl's voice shouted from behind the little boy.

"Nothin', Em." The boy said, glaring down at the little boy, who had tears starting to form in his chocolate orbs.

"Please, don't hurt, him, George. He's me friend." The girl said sounding tough.

"Al'ight. But `e better watch out next time." The boy said and stormed off.

"Thank you." The little boy said, looking down at his worn boots, still holding his pail.

"It's al'ight. That was just me olda brother, George. I'm Emma Cotsworth, what's yers?" she asked smiling.

"David Jones, but you can call me Davy, me whole family does." Davy said, looking up shyly from his feet and at the girl who had told the boy off. She had long, dark brown hair, green eyes, and wore a navy blue dress, she was close to his height too.

"'Ello, David Jones. Wanna be my friend?" she asked hopefully. The smile she had could light up the world.

"Al'ight." Davy said, grinning, and the two started walking down the stone walk. They walked slowly until they heard a girl's voice shouting for them to stop. When she caught up with them, Davy noticed that she looked exactly like Emma, except that she had blue eyes and her hair was shorter.

"'Ello, Emma. Who's this?" the girl asked, she was Emma's age and Davy assumed his age too. He also noticed that she was dressed more fancy than Emma as well.

"This is me new best friend, Davy Jones." Emma said smiling brightly, causing Davy to smile as well.

"'Ello, Davy. I'm Rebecca, Emma's twin." She said, looking over at Emma, who was still smiling brightly.

"Hey, `ow `bout we walk to school together, Mama did say not to go alone." Emma said beaming.

"Is it your first day, too?" Davy asked Emma, not wanting to look at Rebecca, something about her made it hard for him to talk to her.

"Hmm. Mama wanted George to take us, but she won't mind really. I `ear school's fun though, you cain paint, sing, and play. Least, that's what Mama says." Emma said as the three started walking, with Emma in the middle.

The singing part sounded fun to Davy because he loved music. He hoped that he would enjoy school, especially with his new friends.
