The overnight bags sat in the hallway as Liu once again reviewed the directions to the hotel. He was required to attend a convention that was to begin later that night and the city had been generous enough to allow spouses to come along. Kait didn't want to leave the children with a sitter, but she didn't want to be away from her husband either.
Liu convinced her that this would be a perfect time for them to have their time alone together. "Besides, Mrs. Abernathy is really good with the children" he said as Kait wrote down some last minute instructions.
Kait reminded two year old May to be on her best behavior and kept her fingers crossed that the little girl would follow her directions. Liu carried out a sleeping six month old Kevin to his bassinet that sat in the large living room. All that was missing was Mrs. Abernathy.
As Liu nervously looked at his watch, Kait checked on Kevin one more time when the phone rang. The couple looked at each other as they each had "that feeling". Liu answered the phone. It was Mrs. Abernathy.
"I'm sorry to hear that" Liu said with feigned politeness. "No, no really we'll find someone else. Yeah don't give it a second thought. I'm very sorry for your loss. Ok, bye Mrs. Abernathy". Liu waited until she hung up before slamming the receiver.
"What happened?" Kait asked. "Mrs. Abernathy's sister died and she has to go out of town to make the funeral arrangements. She was 102 years old and really picked a great time to die. " Liu said angrily.
"I'll stay with the kids, you go to the convention" Kait offered.
"NO!!! I made arrangements for us at the hotel. You're coming with me!" Liu demanded.
"Ok, then, we'll bring the children" Kait suggested. "Are we ever going to have time alone together anymore?" Liu asked in a frustrated tone
"I can ask my mother to watch them" Kait said as she secretly prepared for the backlash.
"I'm not that desperate! I'd leave them on the street before I leave them with her!"
She did not argue with him. It would have been just one more losing battle for her He was at a volatile point right now.
"Ok, then let's ask the guys to watch them" Kait suggested. Liu exhaled and shrugged his shoulders as if to say "why not?" as he looked at Kevin still asleep.
Liu handed Kait the phone. "Give them a call" he said in a less than optimistic tone. Kait picked up the phone and nervously dialed the pad.
"Hello" Peter answered.
Kait explained the situation. "Would it be possible to watch the children for the weekend?" she asked.
"Um, I guess so Kait, its just that I'm really not sure if..."
"Thank you !!!" Kait exclaimed joyously. "I'll get their stuff packed and bring them down in an hour."
Peter hung up the phone dumbfounded. "Guys we're not busy this weekend, right?" he asked.
"No Pete, this weekend we're just going to chill out and relax – just the four of us" said Micky.
"Make that six of us" Peter informed them.
"Who are the other two?" Davy asked.
"Well you know Kait and Liu?" Peter asked.
"Unfortunately, we know Liu" Mike said.
"They're bringing their children here for us to watch while Liu attends a convention" Peter said.
"Pete, they can't do that. We can't watch them for the weekend. Our first two days of r and r and now its going to be replaced with crying babies and dirty diapers. Look, you gotta tell them that they need to make other arrangements" Mike explained.
The door bell rings and Mike answers. Kait and Liu are standing there with kids in tow.
"Thanks again for watching them. They'll be no trouble at all" Liu said.
"Sure, anytime" Mike replied sheepishly. "Hey, we love the little ones" he mumbled as May toddled over to Micky's drumset.
"This is going to be a long weekend". Davy declared.
