Chapter 3

The stick said blue. She was a torrent of mixed emotions – overjoyed because she was pregnant, sad because she couldn’t tell Grissom, and angry because she had let him go and she would have to go the rest of her life living with this baby by herself.

She went about the normal routine, not telling Burns until she started showing, which with her build luckily wasn’t until the 6th month. The group was supportive enough – giving her a lovely baby shower.

Nobody except Burns knew who the father was and she was planning on keeping it that way. The only one she would tell of the fatherhood was her child, and that would be when he or she is old enough to ask. If her child wants to do a major search for him then that was fine by her. Maybe time would heal all wounds she created and they could get back together again.

She shook her head at the thought, she didn’t want to be sad and cause the baby anguish. She learned that every slight negative emotion can cause the baby great pain. She wanted her baby to be happy.

There were a couple guys in the PD that had tried to shove themselves into her life for moral support but she didn’t take their kind hearted gestures. She willed herself to believe that she didn’t need anyone, but it wasn’t true. She needed Grissom. She was being a jackass, but she couldn’t bring herself to it.

On September 16, her 33rd birthday, she gave birth to a girl, Lydia Marie. The name was from a favorite aunt of hers. Later on, when she got to her room, they brought Lydia into the room in a clear bassinet. While she was holding her daughter, she looked closely and started to cry.

‘She looks just like Griss.’ She smiled to herself through the tears of sadness and joy.

She knew she should find him and tell him but she couldn’t bring herself to go through with it. She feared that he wouldn’t want the baby because of the way things ended so she figured she would just raise her on her own. When Lydia was old enough and wanted to know about her father, she would allow her to seek him.

While she was home, she developed a slight case of postpartum depression, and she wished that Griss were there with her, holding her as she cries, telling her everything was okay. She wondered if he would take turns changing diapers, feeding her, clothing her, and bathing her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Grissom missed Sara immensely. She wondered what she was doing daily, and if she had another boyfriend. He couldn’t even picture her and another guy doing things together and having sex. It made him angry and sad at the same time.
Micky and Davy came into his office, Micky not knocking as usual. “Hey Griss, what’s up?”
“Nothing.” He was trying to do paperwork but not accomplishing anything as usual, because his mind was constantly on Sara and her gorgeous body.
“Thinking about Sara again?” A slight grin ran across Davy’s mouth, showing his pearly whites.
“No, what gave you that idea?” He pushed his glasses up over his nose.
“Come on Grissom, we all know you think about her night and day. You can’t deny it any longer.” Micky answered with a huff.
“Okay. I think about her. Now that you have gotten it out of me, would you both care leaving?” He was annoyed.
“We have something to tell you. We both have heard through the grapevine that Sara gave birth to a girl on September 16.” Davy spoke up.
“Her birthday. Oh my goodness, that baby is mine! But you know how the rumors get started, how do I know to believe that?” Grissom grinned widely at the prospect of the rumor being true.
“Why don’t you give Burns a call? He’s the one who spread it around.” Micky suggested.
“He’s not the type to spread rumors. Unless...” It was all clear to him now.
“Unless what?” Davy and Micky were clueless.
“Never mind. Excuse me while I give him a call.”
Grissom called Burns.
“Burns.”
“Hey Burns, it’s Gil Grissom.”
“Hey Gil, what’s up?”
“Um, I heard through the grapevine that Sara had a girl on September 16. Is this true?”
“Yes it is.” Burns was smiling widely; he figured someone like Micky, Davy or Brass would tell him.
“Burns, did you spread it around so that Sara and I would get back together?”
“You figured me out Gil. You both are such a wonderful pair I had to do something. Besides, Sara had a slight bout of postpartum depression and she confided in me that she was missing you but was afraid to tell you about the baby.”
“Why?”
“She figured you didn’t want her because of what happened.”
“That’s not true. I would have welcomed her with open arms. Listen, don’t tell her that I’m taking the first flight available to San Francisco.”
“I won’t. Good luck Gil.”
“Thanks Burns.”
The two men hung up and Grissom took the quickest flight that he could get to San Francisco Airport.
Grissom arrived at the crime lab in San Francisco at around 1:00 PM. Burns made sure that he held Sara there so that she could get the surprise of her life.
He was able to get to Burns’ office without her seeing him. She was in the evidence room processing.
“Glad you’re here Gil. I’ll call her to my office.”
Burns went to get Sara as Grissom hid behind the door. As Burns closed the door and Grissom was standing behind Sara, he said, “Sara, there’s someone here that I’d like you to meet. Come on out.”
Grissom walked beside Sara and said, “Hi.”
Sara jumped. “Griss? What are you doing here?” The smile was intricately etched on her mouth; she couldn’t shake it.
“I heard about the baby. Sara, I want to be in your life.”
“How did you hear about Lydia?” Just then it dawned on her. “Burns?”
“Sorry Sara. I only did it so that you both would get back together.”
“Thank you.” She whispered, wiping the tears from her eyes.
“I’ll let you two talk alone. Sara, you deserve all the happiness in the world.”
“Thanks Burns.”
He left the office and Grissom and Sara talked.
“Sara, why didn’t you tell me about the baby?”
“Because I was afraid you didn’t want her.”
“That’s not true. I love you both. I would have welcomed her with open arms. What is her name anyhow?”
“Lydia Marie, after my favorite aunt.”
“How beautiful. I’d like to see her.”
“Sure. We can go and pick her up at my friend’s house.”
They both left the crime lab and took Sara’s car to her friend Sondra’s house.
“Hi Sondra. I’m here to pick up Lyds.”
Sondra was in the bedroom where she just picked up four-month-old Lydia from her nap. “Why, did something happen at work?”
“No, Griss is with me.”
“He is? Oh Sara, that’s awesome!” Sondra emerged from the bedroom, carrying Lydia who was rubbing her eyes, holding her Strawberry Shortcake blanket and sucking on a binky.
“Sondra, this is Gil Grissom. Griss, this is Sondra Berks.”
Grissom shook her hand since she handed Lydia to Sara. “Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise. I have heard so much about you. You are very handsome.”
Grissom blushed. “Thank you.”
“Here’s her diaper bag. She had a bottle just before her nap two hours ago, so she should be good for a while.” She handed the bag to Grissom.
“Thanks Sondra. I’ll talk to you later.” Sara winked at Sondra. She would have loads to tell her when she got the chance.
“Okay. See you both later!”
Sara, Grissom and Lydia went to Sara’s car and drove to her apartment. When they arrived, the three went into the apartment and Sara gave Lydia to Grissom while she placed the diaper bag on the kitchen counter.
Grissom started bonding with his daughter. “Hi Lydia. I’m your daddy. You look just like me, it’s amazing.”
Lydia gazed into her daddy’s blue eyes and smiled.
“You’re such a beautiful girl.” Grissom’s eyes were glazed with tears as he put his index finger inside her hand. He watched with wonder as she grasped with a strong hold on his finger and tugged.
“She looks like you.” Sara sat besides him on the couch.
“I noticed that. How are you feeling?”
“Better. Did Burns tell you about my postpartum depression?” Sara figured he did.
“Yes. Sara you could have called me. I would have been there for you in a few hours.”
“I know Griss, but I was afraid.”
“I know. I would have helped out, and stayed for as long as you needed me.”
“But then you would have left.”
“Only for a short time. Sara, I want you in my life.”
“I want you too. I love you Griss.”
“Will you say my name?”
“I love you Gil.”
“I love you too Sara. Will you marry me?”
“I need to tell you the reason why I wouldn’t marry you when you asked before.”
“Go ahead.” He placed Lydia on his lap and hers while she spoke.
“My dad beat my mom and she ended up killing him one night. My brother and I got sent to foster care from the age of ten.”
“So you were afraid that our marriage would end up like that.”
“Yes. But I should have known better. You love me so much; you would take good care of me regardless. I messed up everything in our relationship.”
“’The course of true love never did run smooth.’ I did a lot to mess it up as well.”
“Ah, A Midsummer’s Night Dream. Do you have to quote everything, Griss?”
“Yes I do. Usually everything gets summed up in one easy package that way. Our marriage can work out Sara. It won’t be like your parents.”
“I now know it won’t. The answer is yes.”
With lovely Lydia Marie between them, the two kissed passionately. They then kissed Lydia on the forehead.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Three weeks later, Gil and Sara were married in the new church that they attended in San Francisco. They both gave their lives to Christ and decided to raise Lydia in a Christian home.

They had Lydia dressed up in a white gown with matching socks, and the whole crew from both Vegas and San Francisco were at the party they had at the church. Jim Brass walked her down the aisle, Micky was Grissom’s best man, and Warrick, Davy, and Nick were ushers. Sara asked Sondra to be her Maid of Honor, and Sofia, Catherine and Elaine were bridesmaids.

At the reception, many of the guests danced with Sara to “Baby Come Back” by Player. It was the song that they chose because it was how Grissom felt and Sara loved the song.

Micky danced with her first. “Sara, I’m so glad that you and Griss are together. You both are meant to be together.”

“Thanks Micky. I know. I understand you lectured him a lot about him coming to see me here.”

“Yes I did. Let me tell you it took forever for him to listen to me too. He was such a jerk for taking so long to come to his senses!”

“I know; he took two years! But I’m glad that we’re together now. We also have a beautiful baby together.”

“Yes, she is a beautiful girl. So any more children in your future?”

“I’m not sure yet. Perhaps a boy would be nice.”

“It would.”

“So how are things going with Elaine? She’s a sweetheart.”

“Really well. I am in love with her Sara.” Micky always was able to tell things to Sara when he worked with her, she seemed to keep any information they shared to herself.

“Then go for it. Don’t wait forever like Griss did.”

“But we’ve only been dating for a year.”

“So? If she loves you too she will say yes.”

“She does love me. You know what? I think I will. Thanks!”

He ended the dance with Sara, and walked back to the table where Elaine was sitting talking to Davy and his date.

“Lanie? I have something to ask you.” Micky got down on one knee. “Elaine Marie Bouvier, will you marry me?”

Elaine started to cry. “Oh Micky...yes!”

Micky got up and gave her a big hug and a kiss. “You have made me the happiest man on earth!”

Everyone at the reception cheered and clapped for the couple as the two took their seats. A couple minutes later, the Bride’s dance continued. After all the ones who danced with Sara finished, Grissom danced with her.

“Did you say something to Micky? He doesn’t usually move that fast about something.”

“Yes I did. I said he should go for it. If she loved him, she would say yes. She did.”

“She sure did! So are you looking forward to our honeymoon?”

“I sure am. That was great that you were able to book a trip to Hawaii on such short notice.”

“I know. There were rooms available and I was able to grab one.”

“I am looking forward to sharing the scenery with you.”

“Yes, and other things.” Gil winked at his wife.

“Behave!” She sounded like Austin Powers, and then laughed.

A while later, Sara threw the bouquet and Davy’s date Louise caught it. She was very excited at the thought of being married to Davy and he just had a look of horror on his face as he looked to all his co-workers, who laughed at him. They knew what a playboy he was, and how he doesn’t even go on second dates.

Louise ran over to the flabbergasted Davy. “Davy, I caught the bouquet! You know what that means!”

“Um, Louise, I just met you, you know.”

“I know, but with more dates we’ll get to know each other better. This is a good sign Davy!”

“Ah, let’s just take things really slow, okay?”

“Of course!” She was still grinning from ear to ear.

It was time to catch the garter and of all things, Davy caught it. Louise was jumping for joy.

“Davy! You caught the garter! Now this is definitely meant to be!”

His friends were laughing even harder.

“Oh shut up!” He yelled at his friends. Louise heard him of course.

“Davy Jones! If you don’t like me, you should have just said so.” She turned abruptly and stormed out the doors to the cool night air.

“Davy, you better go after her.” Mike said.

“I guess I better.”

He went outside to where she was sitting on a bench, crying.

“Louise, I’m sorry.”

“Fine, but you could have just made it clear that you didn’t like me.”

“It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s just that...” He didn’t want it to come out wrong but he didn’t know how to say that he was just someone that was always on the market.

“It’s just that what?”

“Well, please don’t be upset, but I’m just the kind of guy that likes to keep himself available. You just never know when the right girl will come along.”

“I could be that girl Davy. You haven’t given it a chance.” Louise sniffed.

“You’re right about that. How about we go out again and start over?”

“I’d love that.”

“Great. How about dinner tomorrow afternoon?”

“Sure. What time?”

“How about 4:30?”

“Great!”

They walked back inside, and at that time Sara and Grissom were opening gifts. They got some really lovely and useful items that they could use for their future home.

Gil sold his townhouse and moved to San Francisco with Sara and their daughter. They would stay at her apartment until they bought a new townhouse. Sara was going to stay at the lab in San Francisco and Gil was going to retire and stay home with Lydia. They both didn’t mind the reversal of roles and Gil was more than looking forward to taking care of his little girl.

After that, they left for Sara’s apartment where they spent their wedding night. The next morning they flew to Maui, where they spent a week sightseeing and walking along the beach, collecting seashells and swimming in the ocean. When they got back, they started looking for houses.
