Chapter 2

Gil and Sara sat together on the bench, holding hands and gazing out onto the moon drenched bay. Silence was golden, but they needed to talk about their relationship and what they were going to do. Gil was hoping that Sara would make her mind up soon. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her; he didn’t want her to take forever.

“So, what would you do if I decided to come stay in San Francisco?”

“I would date you, and show you off to everyone I know.” Sara beamed. She couldn’t believe she was still in love with him.

“You would?”

“Yes I would. I think we’d make a good looking couple.”

Gil smiled from ear to ear. “I think so too. Is that a yes, Sara Sidle?”

“Maybe.” She teased.

Gil went to tickle her and she jumped off the bench and landed on the sand. “Ouch, that hurt!”

Gil became concerned and got up to help her back onto the bench. “I’m sorry, are you okay?”

Sara laughed, and tried to tickle Gil. “Yeah, I’m a big girl Griss.”

“So, it’s a maybe huh? If it’s a maybe then why would you say you would date me and show me off?”

“I don’t know, maybe I just want to for the fun of it.” She sheepishly grinned.

“So, what would you do if I decided to go back to Vegas?”

“I’d date you, show you off and make sure you never left my side.”

“Ooh, is that a promise or a threat?”

Gil laughed. “Definitely a promise.”

Sara looked up and kissed Gil on the lips lightly and sweetly.

“You still haven’t given me an answer, Sara.”

“I said maybe.”

“Come on, really.”

“I have to think about it, I really do.”

“I’m sorry, I’m trying not to rush you. It’s just that I...” Why couldn’t he say those three words? He feels that emotion immensely, but the words get caught in his throat.

“You what, Griss?” Sara knew what he wanted to say, and that made her decision quite final. But she wanted to hear him say it first.

“I...I...I...I lo...I love you.” He said it. It actually came out and now it scared him.

Sara grinned like a Cheshire cat. “I love you too. Yes.”

“Yes what?”

“Yes, I will be your girlfriend.”

“Sara, do you know how happy you have made me? I want to shout at the world that you love me and I love you.”

They both embraced, heat enveloping them. “Gil, make love to me.”

Gil’s heart raced to his throat. For one he called her Gil and two because he wants to like crazy. “Okay, let’s go back to the hotel.”

“Okay.” She breathed heavily into his chest.

“Silence is golden. What are you thinking?”

Sara snuggled against the warmth of his chest and sighed, “About our future.”

“What about our future?” He kissed her forehead gently.

“Oh just about being married and having kids...” Sara sighed softly; completely warm to those fuzzy feelings she has about life with Grissom.

“A lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment.”

“Ah Jane Austen. Very nice, Griss.”

“It seems to suit the moment, so alas I quote.”

“It is just such a warm and fuzzy thought, you know?”

“So, do you wish to marry me, Sara Sidle?”

“Um, do you think we are moving a little too fast?” She laughed at that ridiculous answer she just gave him. “Duh, we’ve known each other for years and here I am stating that. I just don’t know yet Griss.”

“What’s not to know? Like you said, we’ve known each other for years, and why not take the plunge into matrimony? I love you always, Sara.”

“I really don’t know, Griss. I think I just want to live together for awhile and see how things go.”

“What, you don’t think things will work out between us?”

Sara was getting testy. “Well, considering your track record, I am not sure about how things will work out.”

She didn’t understand this. Now she was scared.

“I can’t believe you Sara! I tell you I love you, which you know darn well was hard for me to say, and you tell me this?”

“Look Griss, I know it was difficult for you but this is difficult for me too. I mean you come back into my life after two years thinking you can just sweep me off my feet like nothing ever happened. Well you can’t.”

“So all this was just for you to get lucky? You’re rich, Sara do you know that?”

“No, Gil it isn’t like that at all. You don’t get it do you? You abruptly left my life and now you come riding in on shining armor just thinking I’d forget all about what went on? It’s not that easy.”

“I think you should go now. I am going to finish working this case with you but our relationship is over.”

“Fine, if that’s the way you want it Griss, than that’s the way you shall receive.”

“Yoda said that Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you.”

“Now you are quoting Star Wars? Oh give me a break, Grissom.”

“The evidence never lies, Miss Sidle.”

“Yada, yada, yada...Now I’m quoting Seinfeld. I’m out of here! This was a mistake!”

As Sara got dressed and ran out the door of Gil’s hotel room, he yelled, “The sex wasn’t great either, I hope you know.”

“Same here, pal.” She hissed as she walked out of the door and into the hallway.

Sara and Gil went to work that evening and didn’t speak a word to each other. They went over the evidence they had and went back out into the field. She had the evidence she needed from the information he gave her on the cricket and he decided to stay and give her a hand. He didn’t know why but he couldn’t stay away from her, even though his love had turned to extreme anger and frustration.

“Look, Grissom you don’t have to stay here and work with me. You are finished as far as I am concerned.”

“No I said I would stay and help until this is over and that is what I intend to do.”

“You are a stubborn mule do you know that?” Something was drawing them together and she tried to will it away. She doesn’t even know why she did what she did but she didn’t want to be near him.

“Yes I know I am, somebody has told me over and over many times.” He glared at her. He didn’t know what to do. He wanted to finish the case but he also wanted to cut out of there and fly home to Vegas. “Fine you win. I will leave this morning. I have to get back to my team anyhow.”

“Good.”

He left her at the scene and he went back home to Vegas.

Sara tried hard not to cry. This time she had made him leave, and she doesn’t know why. She was too tired to fight it though; she had made her choice.

~~~~~~~~~~
Two weeks had passed and Sara still couldn’t get him off her mind. She felt she should apologize but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. A large fear gripped her and she knew that if she tried he would reject her once again. This time though, she deserved it. This was so unlike her, but the minute he mentioned marriage, she flipped out.
She surmised it’s because of the horrible marriage her parents had and she is afraid that hers and Grissom’s marriage will turn out with the same results. Sara is a hot head and Grissom’s track record suggests that with his flip-flopping he will give his mixed signals over again. He did say he loved her, but her father said the same thing to her mother and look what happened. She was going to have to pull herself together and get through this.
What alarmed her right now was the fact that she hasn’t had her period yet, and she is never late. Then she remembered that she had unprotected sex with him, but she is too afraid to buy a pregnancy test and go to her gynecologist.
If she was pregnant she would be able to raise the child by herself, but she didn’t really want to. If only Grissom would have just let them be the way they were she would have still been with him and they would’ve become parents like normal people. But she and Grissom weren’t normal - not traditional at all. She then rationalized she better find out so she ran to the store, picked up an easy test and took it at home.
As she waited for the results she couldn’t help but wonder what their baby would look like. Stop doing this to yourself, Sidle, she warned herself.
