Mike was dozing in front of the TV when the telephone rang. Immediately Mike had the feeling something was wrong. It was much too late for a social call. Even Davy's girlfriends didn't call this late.
He got up off the couch and answered the phone on the third ring.
"Hello?" Mike asked.
"Good evening, Mr. Nesmith, or should I say Mr. Blessing?" The caller replied, in a clipped Chinese accent.
"Who...who is this?" Mike demanded, though he had a very good idea, "What do you want?"
"I think your three friends have something to say first." The man replied.
Over the phone, Mike could here Micky, Peter and Davy shouting to him a short distance away.
"Mike, it's Dragonman and Boris and Madam!" Micky shouted.
"Don't help them!" Peter cried out.
"Get help Mike!" Davy shouted too.
"As you can hear, Mr. Nesmith, I have your friends." Dragonman said.
"If you hurt them..." Mike growled.
"Meet me at the China Boy restaurant in one hour." Dragonman interrupted, "Come through the back entrance and come alone...or else." The line went dead.
Mike didn't need to be told what 'or else' meant. His eyes narrowing in rage, Mike picked up the phone and threw it to the floor. He then charged back upstairs to the secret box in his room. There was another object inside it that he would need before he met Dragonman.
----------
Dragonman placed the receiver back on its cradle and handed the phone to Madam, who placed it on the table next to her. She and Boris were standing on either side of Dragonman, who then turned to his captives.
"Your friend will be here soon." He chuckled.
Micky, Peter and Davy were kneeling in front of Dragonman, their hands tied behind their backs. Chang and Toto, Dragonman's henchmen, were standing on either side of them, guns in their hands. The two other chinese men who had helped Boris and Madam were standing against the far wall.
"What's this all about, Dragonman?" Micky asked.
"What do you want with Mike?" Davy asked.
"You're still not sore about that Doomsday Bug incident are you?" Peter asked.
"It is that and much more." Dragonman smiled, "Your friend was very naughty."
The three Monkees looked at each other.
"What did Mike do?" Micky asked.
"You mean you do not know?" Boris asked back.
Micky, Peter and Davy shook their heads no.
"Perhaps we should tell them?" Madam asked Dragonman.
"I will tell them." Dragonman put in, "After their friend arrives. But now it is time for them to pay for what they have done to me."
"What are you going to do?" Micky asked, shrinking back from the chinese spy. He and Peter had been captives of Dragonman before and they were not treated well. "Are you going to give us the Chinese ice torture?"
Dragonman didn't answer Micky. He just walked around behind the three Monkees and nodded to the two men standing by the far wall. Chang and Toto moved away too, putting their guns inside their belts.
The captives looked at Boris and Madam for some sign as to what was going on, but they were coolly watching Dragonman, Chang and Toto take something from the other two men.
Micky, Peter and Davy turned to look behind them to see Dragonman, Chang and Toto walking up to them, holding bamboo canes.
"What are we going to do?" Dragonman sneered, "We are going to do this!"
With that, Dragonman, Chang and Toto began to cane Micky, Peter and Davy across their backs. The three men howled in pain, but the three Chinese men did not let up. Boris and Madam gulped and looked at each other. They had no love for the three Monkees either, but were still taken aback by Dragonman's cruelty.
"Enough!" Dragonman ordered after several minutes.
Chang and Toto stopped the caning and looked down at the three Monkees, now lying on the floor moaning in pain.
"What now, master?" Chang asked.
"It's time they took a dip while we wait for their friend." Dragonman answered, then looked at the other two men. "Get the vat ready."
Chang and Toto stood Micky, Peter and Davy up, forced them to stand back to back and wrapped a rope around them. The rope was attached to a pulley and the three men were hauled up into the air and the rope tied to a pillar. The other two men pushed a large cooking vat filled with water under them and lit the fire underneath it.
"What are you going to do now, Dragonman?" Madam asked.
"If their friend does not come soon, they will be boiled Monkees." Dragonman smiled.
"Mike will come, and you'll be sorry." Davy said. "He'll have the police with him."
"You had better hope not." Dragonman replied. he lit a candle and placed it by the rope holding the three Monkees over the vat. "The candle will burn down and the flame will hit the rope, the rope will quickly sever and drop you three to a painful death. If your friend comes, you will be set down and we will all have a talk about the past." He looked at his watch. "Your friend has forty-five minutes left to save you."
