Chapter 1

Mike had this nightmare every so often, and it always was the same. He was floating in the air, loud, screaming noises around him. Hot red lights zipped past, but never hit him. Mike wanted to move, to get away from the insanity around him, but it was like he was floating in thick mud. Suddenly, a red light flashed past him and exploded behind him and to his right. There was a scream...and without turning he knew who it was.

"Babs, are you okay?" Mike shouted.

"I'm hit." Came the reply...then nothing.

"Babs, can you hear me?" Mike shouted again, straining to turn around.

There was no reply. Mike called out again and again, but then a red light came toward him... and Mike hit the floor of his bedroom.

Seconds later, there was a light switched on and Mike's friend Micky ran over to him.

"Mike are you okay?" Micky asked, pushing his curly hair out of his own eyes.

Mike sat himself up and looked around. He was in the upper bedroom he shared with Micky. It was that nightmare again. He wondered if he had revealed anything.

"I'm fine, Micky." Mike said, "I was just having a bad dream."

"You were yelling, 'Babs, Babs!' over and over again." Micky replied, "Who's Babs?"

Mike was spared from answering right away when Peter and Davy rushed into the room. Their bedroom was right below Micky and Mike's and they had heard Mike fall.

"Mike are you alright?" Davy asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine Davy." Mike said, getting to his feet.

"He was having a bad dream about some girl named Babs." Micky said.

"I once had a bad dream about Valerie." Peter put in, "I dreamed she married Ronnie Farnsworth."

"Yeah, Babs was a girl I knew long time ago," Mike said, "Before I left Texas. She went and married an oilman."

"Well, let's get back to bed." Peter said, "We don't want to miss the Memorial Day parade tomorrow morning."

The other three agreed and they all went back to their beds, but Mike didn't sleep a wink the rest of the night.

------------

That same night, at the Veteran's office in LA, some dirty work was afoot. Two figures, one short and slim and the other tall and husky, were quickly riffling through the office's files. They had cut the power to the small building the office was in, shutting off the burglar alarm, but it would only be a short matter of time before someone noticed and called the police.

"Madam?" The husky person said, shining a light on the other.

"What is it Boris, and quit shining that flashlight in my face!" Madam snapped, pushing Boris' flashlight to the side.

"Why are we looking for this Admiral Bloomer person for?" Boris asked.

"Because we have orders from our superiors to find out information about him to perhaps...persuade him to give us the naval signals the American Navy uses against our Chinese comrades, that's why." She said. "Ah, here it is." She smiled, pulling out a thick folder.

"Let me see too." Boris said, coming closer, but he bumped into the filing cabinet, sending it crashing to the ground. The folders inside the open drawer were scattered around.

"You idiot!" Madam yelled, "You'll wake the neighborhood!"

Indeed, some lights were coming on from nearby from houses. It would be only a short time before the police were called.

"We had better take this file and leave..." Madam voice then trailed off. She then picked up a file that had partially fallen open. A picture was partially in view.

"Let's go, Madam!" Boris said, as a police siren was heard in the distance.

But Madam was looking at the picture inside the file. "This is very interesting." She muttered to herself.

"Madam, we have to go!" Boris shouted as the siren grew closer.

"Recognize this man?" Madam said to Boris, shining her flashlight on the picture.

"Yes, but what is he...?

"We'll figure it out later." Madam snapped, as she grabbed Admiral Bloomer's file from Boris and put the other file on top of it. "Don't just stand there, let's go!" She said, pushing Boris to the window they had used to climb inside.

The two spies climbed out the window and ran away, just as the police car pulled up in front.

--------------

Madam was silently looking over the second file she had found as Boris drove their car back to their hideout. Finally, Boris could no longer stand the suspense.

"Well, what have you found out?" He demanded.

Madam closed the file and gave her companion an evil smile.

"I think we have here something our superiors will be very interested in." She said, "It contains the answers to a mystery that has bothered them for many years."

Boris waited for her to continue, but Madam just sat back in her seat and continued to smile.
