Why is Satanism evil?
According to Christian dogma, man cannot save himself. Salvation is given by God alone, and even though man - according to Catholicism (see note), but not according to Protestantism - can to some degree earn merit by doing good deeds, it is taught that man only does such deeds in cooperation with the grace of God, ie. if he has already surrendered himself to the will of God. The Catholic Encyclopedia says: "This grace cannot be merited; it proceeds solely from the love and mercy of God. Man may receive or reject this inspiration of God, he may turn to God or remain in sin. Grace does not constrain man's free will" (see http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13407a.htm). Man cannot by himself approach God, sanctify himself, make himself more holy, or better himself. To think that man can is moral evil, and it is the ultimate sin; the sin of Adam and Eve who were led astray by the serpent: "Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, 'You shall not eat of any tree of the garden'? And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die'. But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:1-5). Eating the forbidden apple, the serpent said, would be a way for Adam and Eve to better themselves, to open their eyes, and make them like God. The serpent was of course later identified with Satan. Why is Satanism evil? It is evil because it teaches that man can work to better himself by himself, and that there are things he can do to open his eyes, and make himself more holy. This has been widely misunderstood, both by non-religious people and by Satanists. From a Christian point of view, believing that man by himself can work to better himself is in itself evil. Satanism does not ask Satanists to commit crimes, or to act in evil ways, but it does ask them to believe in something which according to Christianity is fundamentally evil, namely that they have the power to work on their own - using the Christian term - salvation. Many self-proclaimed Satanists have confused this call for self-improvement with a call for selfishness, and much pseudo-philosophical nonsense has been written over the years, trying to defend various forms of Satanic superman ideologies, social Darwinism, and even fascism. No-one has suffered more in the hands of ill-educated Satanists than Nietzsche. As any student who has taken philosophy 101 will be able to tell you: Social Darwinism has no foundation in reason - and as anyone equipt with a conscience can easily see: It is morally wrong. Such idelogies have nothing whatsoever to do with religious Satanism. Note: "If any one saith, that the good works of the one that is justified are in such manner the gifts of God, that they are not also the good merits of him that is justified, by the good works which he performs through the grace of God and the merit of Jesus Christ, whose living member he is, and does not truly merit increase in grace, eternal life, and the attainment of eternal life, if so be, that he depart in grace, and an increase in glory, let him be anathema." - The Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent |
