Why are Satanists so preoccupied with Christianity?

Why are Satanists so preoccupied with Christianity? Browsing Satanic websites you will find many answers to this question. Christianity, some will argue, has such a tremendous influence on people today that Satanic neophytes have to go through sort of a debunking period in order to totally cleanse themselves, and so they tend to spend a lot of time mocking Christians, doing blasphemy rites, calling out the Lord's Prayer backwards, etc. This is hardly a convincing argument, considering the state of modern Christianity. Some places, I am sure, Christianity can still be said to be an oppressive force. In most European countries, however, Christianity has very little influence on the way that people think. Others will argue that the only reason why Satanists are preoccupied with Christianity is that Christians spend so much time attacking Satanism, blaming Satanists for all sorts of evil. There can be little doubt that Satanism is under attack from Christian fundamentalists. However, the fact that some Christians choose to act badly certainly does not explain why some Satanists choose to do the same. Saying the Lord's Prayer backwards is no proper response to Christian accusations, it is mere mockery.

The reason why Satanists are so preoccupied with Christianity is that Satanism is in actuality a Christian cult - and a most remarkable one, since it does not follow Christ. Some Satanists will claim that they worship a god who was there long before Christ, or that they have somehow revived an ancient belief. Nevertheless, Satanism as we know it is quite clearly a modern phenomenon. As D. Vera states on the Black Goat Cabal website, "Most (if not all) traditional Satanists are not "traditional" in the sense of having a direct lineage from any Satanist group that existed before 1966 C.E." (see http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/dvera/bgoat/traditional.html). Satanism grew from Christianity, just like Christianity grew from Judaism, although in a different fashion. According to Christianity Jesus Christ was the fulfillment of the Jewish hope for a Messiah, and so Christianity sees itself as the continuation of the story of the chosen people, as told in The Old Testament. Satanists, however, do obviously not consider Satan to be the fulfillment of any Christian hope. The Satanists, realizing what Christianity was all about (or perhaps what Christianity had become) decided to trade one god for another, Jesus for Azazel, thereby discontinuing the Jewish-Christian beliefs. Satanism and Christianity to some extend still share the same tradition, though, literary sources, mythology, etc.

Most Satanists, I am aware, will thoroughly disagree. For some peculiar reason it is very hard for Satanists to admit to the fact that Satanism has its roots in Christianity, - and some will spend days and weeks and years trying to convince you that it is not so, coming up with all sorts of strange and wonderful explanations for calling Satan Satan, rather than simply say, "Sure. That's where we came from. We were there, and then we left."

The Satan that we worship is the 'Christian' Satan. However, Satan is not what they Christians say he is. This is des Pudels Kern.
