A comment on biblical contradictions.

Are there contradictions in the Jewish-Christian bible? Certainly. The bible consists of a great many books, written by a great many different people, at different times in history, and under different circumstances. Also, the books in the bible differ in regard to genre. There are historic tales, often mixed with mythology, there are poems, and letters, and visionary writings. Some books have more than one author, and it is almost certain that some parts of the New Testament are not original, but have been added later on. It would, one could argue, indeed be surprising if there were no contradictions to be found.

As D. Vera argues, "Biblical contradictions are the most powerful argument against "Biblical inerrancy," a notion central to fundamentalism" (see http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/dvera/CoEvan/arguments/contradict/index.html). This is true. However, biblical contradictions tell us nothing about Christianity as such. Clearly, the bible was not written by Christ himself; it was written by humans, trying to interpret and communicate what they had been told, what they had found out, or what they themselves had experienced. To be fair, it is important to recognize the fact that it is only because of brilliant Christian bible scholars that we are now able to understand the bible in its true historical and religious context. Contradictions in the bible were not originally brought to light by clever Satanists; they were pointed out by Christian theologians who were more than willing to discuss them.
